About the Hashomrim Cards

A Release published in support of cards designed to subvert children against their parents was greatly misleading The Voice Of Lakewood magazine, claims.
Shomrim cards features grotesque caricatures of frum adults using smartphones, and of children complaining of the negative influence their parents have on them. The cards are aimed at convincing children to demand that their parents stop using smartphones.  A Advertisement published in a Lakewood publication a few weeks ago expressed support for the cards and encouraged people to donate. It included a letter signed by the roshei yeshiva. TVOL has learned that the rabbonim were never shown the cards and the letter was merely meant to support a project promoting awarness to the dangers of smartphone usage. When shown the cards, the Rabbonim  strongly disapproved of their content and message.

Lakewood Math Teacher's Effort to secure more school funding continues

Administrative Law Judge Susan Scarola denied a state motion to dismiss a challenge to the school funding formula brought by a Lakewood High School math teacher Arthur Lang  APP reports

"Evidence and testimony presented by Lang "tends to show that (Lakewood Public School District) cannot provide a thorough and efficient education with the level of funding it receives under the (school funding formula) and that, as a result, the (formula) is unconstitutional as applied to the Lakewood public school district."

Lang said “I’m encouraged that we’ll be able to resolve the Lakewood funding conundrum,” he said. "It has been our position since we filed that the lack of funding has had detrimental effects upon student achievement and has reached constitutional dimensions."

His effort has been ongoing since 2014.

New Kosher Pantry in Hospital of University Of Pennsylvania (HUP)

Philadelphia - It took Bikkur Cholim of Philadelphia 20 years of perseverance, lobbying and cajoling but now, finally, Jewish cholim from all over the world will be able to have a user-friendly experience as they access one of the most prestigious medical centers in the world, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP).

Sadly, until very recently, frum patients in HUP didn’t have access to kosher food or other frum amenities for caregivers. All this changed with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the kosher pantry which took place on Thursday, December 5.

“Already 20 years ago, we realized how vitally important a kosher pantry would be for frum patients,” said Mrs. Malkie Schwartz, co-head of Bikkur Cholim of Philadelphia. “We started lobbying the leadership of the hospital back then, but, due to layers of bureaucratic red tape we were met with all kinds of obstacles.

Rav Avigdor Miller on Nachal Chareidi

Rav Avigdor Miller on Nachal Chareidi by Toras Avigdor

Q:
There has been talk in Eretz Yisroel about the frummeh agreeing to join the IDF in separate regiments called nachal chareidi. What does the Rav think about this?

A:
Some people are proposing to take frum boys into the army in frum regiments. You should know that it's a shtus, a complete foolishness. The army is made lichatchilah for the purpose of changing the minds of the boys while in the army. The purpose of the army is to make the youth into Israelis. This is something that their leaders have said long ago. And it's well-known by those who understand things. And we don't want our children to become Israelis. We want them to remain Jews.

More people moved out of New Jersey than any other state in 2018

Lakewood may be the fastest growing town in NJ but on a national level more people moved out of New Jersey in 2018 than any other state. Interestingly the high property taxes is not mentioned in the study.
Each year for the last 42 years, United Van Lines has released its National Movers Study, which examines which states U.S. residents are leaving, and which ones they’re moving to. In 2018, New Jersey leapt past last year’s champion Illinois to take the top spot … on the wrong end of the spectrum. According to the study, 66.8 percent of New Jersey’s moves last year were outbound, the highest rate in the country.
Illinois (65.9 percent), Connecticut (62 percent), New York (61.5 percent), and Kansas (58.7 percent) round out the top five most moved-from states.

Traffic Improvements at Cedarbridge Ave in Lakewood paid by Ocean County

LNN -  Ocean County  awarded contracts for major traffic safety improvements to 2 busy intersections in Lakewood, and 1 of those projects will be funded in part by the Transportation Trust Fund, which is funded by the gas tax increase.

Major upgrades are coming to Cedar Bridge and Oberlin Ave, which include road widening to 4 lanes in each direction on Cedar Bridge Ave and 2 lanes in each direction on Oberlin Ave, left turn lanes and new traffic lights with left turning arrows for all 4 approaches, and associated drainage upgrades.
On Oberlin Ave, the islands will be removed to make way for 12' left turning lanes, and 16' right/through lanes. On Cedar Bridge Ave, the road will be widened from Flannery Ave to fit the additional lanes. New curb and sidewalk, as well as drainage and infiltration basins, will be constructed. As an added bonus, during the morning rush hours, this light will be augmented, to increase the green light time for Oberlin Ave.

NJ Laws Taking Effect, health insurance Mandate, Ban on Smoking on Beaches

TRENTON (AP) - A ban on smoking at public beaches, a state mandate for health insurance and the ability for courts to take away guns from people who pose a danger are among the laws going into effect in the new year in New Jersey. There are about two dozen new laws taking effect in 2019, according to a tally kept by the nonpartisan Office of Legislative Services. A handful of them grabbed headlines when they passed.

New Jersey's minimum wage will rise to $8.85 an hour on Tuesday.

Smoking Ban: Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy signed the bill banning smoking at the state’s public beaches and parks in July, though local communities can opt out and designate small smoking sections. The law takes effect Jan. 16.
