TAG:  PRACTICAL HADRACHA ON AI CHATBOTS
-FDrom the Roshei Yeshiva of Beth Medrash Gavoha and South Fallsburg, shlita
delivered by HaGaon HaRav Dovid Bresslauer, shlita, at the Hineini Nischazek AI Asifa
1. The use of chatbots (through computer, phone, or text) for personal use has no place in the life of a Torah’dik yid.
2. A chatbot is a dangerous tool even when it is used for parnassah because it can quickly become a very slippery slope.
Therefore, those who use it l’tzorech parnassah should understand the importance of having a discussion with a responsible baal eitza, who is familiar with the Torah hashkafa on digital technology, their personal matzav and with the nature and dangers of AI chatbots, in order to:
a. ascertain if their tzorech is an actual tzorech and
b. to adopt gedarim to ensure that a business tool should not, chas v’shalom, metastasize into something bigger.

*This hadracha is referring to AI Chatbots that have the ability:
to converse in a human-like way and converse on any topic.
These include ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Canva AI or Microsoft Co-pilot.
(The AI-generated responses of google searches does not fall under this category at this time.)
It does not refer to AI programs that:
can only generate creative or specific content, such as Adobe AI, Leonardo, Gmail AI/Help Me Write, and Runway Chat. can only converse on limited topics, such as Walmart’s AI customer service. Please be aware that this is a rapidly evolving field and a limited AI may turn into a full-fledged chatbot at any time.

  2. This hysteria is just the frum version of Eliezer Yudkowsky's doomsday cult. AI is no better or worse than the rest of the Internet that's existed for three decades. Every single criticism I've heard applies equally well to social media sites (relationships), computer resources like Otzar or Bar Illan (psak),

Better to keep quiet and though of as a fool than to type on your keyboard and remove all doubt.

  3. Sadly it is patently obvious that most if not all of those speaking out against AI have no idea what it really is. It does say something about their reliability..... On another note don't you think that someone who develops a relationship with a non-entity as AI has other issues to deal with?

    1. Sadly, it is patently obvious that you have no idea what AI really is. It does say something about your anonymous reliability.....

The fact that you don't understand the reality of human emotion and how emotional vacumes get filled speaks about you.

    2. Like maybe we can discuss how vacuums are created because once the vacuum is there there is no real way of containing it.........

    3. Part of the human condition is that there's always an emotional vacume - otherwise you would never seek a relationship, never seek to share, be connected to anyone or anything.

      Learn about humans......

    4. There are intelligent healthy humans and then there are unhealthy ones either with limited intelligence or defective emotions they need to be dealt with on their level (Maybe yours) but to make a blanket rule for everyone based on unhealthy people is wrong and counterproductive.

  4. Funny they only gave examples of AI image generators that are actually quite problematic. They've missed the boat a long time ago.
