Total Silence from Those Who Claim to Represent Lakewood

The Lakewood township committee will approve a massive tax increase on homeowners today at the meeting by approving the budget.

Not a word from the very people who claim to represent and advocate for the Lakewood community. They know how to make noise angry videos calling out utility companies over a few hours of power outages but now? Nothing.
Not a single word or statement from Assemblyman Avi Schnall, Chris Smith Bob Singer, or county and state officials about the Lakewood Township Committee’s decision to raise taxes yet again, this time by hundreds of dollars for many families.
Even worse, the committee members themselves haven’t shown the decency to publicly explain or justify this increase. They continue to hide from the public, making it nearly impossible for residents to ask questions or hold them accountable. Since COVID, they’ve avoided face-to-face public meetings, continuing to conduct township business behind screens via Zoom shielded from direct public scrutiny.

Deafening Silence from the Lakewood VAAD

Equally troubling is the complete silence from the Lakewood VAAD an organization that claims to protect the interests of the community. Where are they now, as residents are hit with yet another massive tax hike?
This is the same VAAD that floods us with mailers and robocalls every election season, boasting about how they keep taxes low and urging us to vote for their chosen candidates. But now, when the community is being squeezed hardest, they’re nowhere to be found shamefully silent, like a hibernating bear that only wakes up when it’s time to rally support for their own political interests.

The community deserves real representation, not selective advocacy. Remember this next time they show up with big promises. When it truly mattered, they went silent.
(An Article in Hamodia dated November 2013 by a Vaad spokesman states, there is no real frustration in the kehilla regarding rising property taxes.” Weisberg says and dismissed, as “not serious analysis,” the notion that there is real frustration among the kehillah in regard to rising property taxes.)

The Local Media? Silent Too.

Local media outlets, usually quick to run fluff pieces or hype minor events, have also gone quiet. No headlines, no questions, no investigations into how or why taxes are being raised so dramatically or what impact this has on families already struggling with high costs of frum living including tuition, camp food etc. It’s as if holding power to account is no longer part of their job description.

The silence is not just disappointing it’s complicit.

  2. Chris Smith? Since when do congressmen representing several municipalities get involved in the local real estate issues pertaining to any of them? The most he can possibly do is write a letter and then risk losing the local Lakewood endorsements.

  3. and shocker of all shockers who would have believed who would have imagined. The highest paid attorney in New Jersey board of education systems has been rehired. And no it's not because he was the lowest bid he was actually the highest. It's because the people we elected actually care for us

  7. Why is it Avi Schnall's business what the Lakewood municipality does? His business is Trenton. Why do you people have such an obsessive hatred of the man? Maybe, just maybe, he isn't a baba capable of magically solving all problems?

  8. No offense but that’s the difference between real politicians who are in the game, work hard and see all the facts and are tireless and selfless and the writer of the above letter who is a wannabe and an armchair quarterback. I would suggest less complaining and less Lashon Harah and more paying more attention to the positive and things to be grateful for. You will be a lot happier

  9. They're telling the truth when they say that most of the Lakewood citizens are not frustrated. That's because it's only a minority of Lakewood that is even aware of the tax increase and all the other shenanigans going on. As stated above, other media outlets are not even reporting about this. How many people go to Hefkervelt anyway?Unfortunately, It's definitely not a majority or even close.

  10. Well written and 100% correct. The corruption and cronyism in this township is a known and decades-long travesty. Many people are paying more in taxes than they're paying for their mortgages! A town with the greatest revenue by tens of millions coming in has the highest taxes in NJ by a longshot! Hundreds of developments going up everywhere ruining any quality of life that's left. Where is all the money going?!

  11. its our own fault we dont have credible candidates to run and win against the puppets put in by BMG & CO(=askonim etc)the whole town can burn as far as they're concerned
taxes arent paid by those who push their agenda its we the people who carry the load and burden until we wise up nothing will change
