A nice report about Lakewood in the APP
"Lakewood Orthodox community rallies in Houston relief drive"
APP LAKEWOOD A call to action by students from Beth Medrash Govoha and other schools prompted the township's Orthodox community to send three truckloads of food and supplies to Hurricane Harvey-stricken Houston on a relief mission -- with plans to send more trucks in the coming days. About 300 people have participated in donating, collecting or shipping the goods, said BMG student Eliyahu Greenwald, 23.
"Lakewood and Jews are usually a lot of time getting criticized,'' Greenwald said Friday. "But when there's a need for help, it's done -- no questions. It's only different now because Houston is 26 or 27 hours away.''
"Every penny, every pallet of food, came from our community,'' Greenwald added.
The trucks arrived in Houston Friday.
Greenwald and Eli Greenhouse, 23, and others through group text messages organized what turned out to be overflow contributions of food, clothing and medical items. More deliveries are planned for early next week, Greenwald said.
