Prime Minister Netanyahu has finalized the current version of the draft law and is preparing to submit it for a Knesset vote after receiving preliminary approval from the Charedi parties. Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch has reviewed the details and suggested only minor changes.
Meanwhile, significant opposition has emerged from within the Torah world. The Bnei Torah movement, led by Rav Ezriel Auerbach, has strongly condemned the proposal, labeling it a gezeiras shmad. Their main objections center on the inclusion of quotas and sanctions, as well as projections that up to 50% of bochurim could be drafted within five to seven years under the current framework.
In addition, a group of Sephardi Roshei Yeshiva has issued a public letter opposing the bill. They expressed deep concern that weaker Sephardi bochurim may be disproportionately targeted to meet the draft quotas, while Ashkenazi students could receive greater protection.

Ponovezh yeshiva statement
Continuing the Legacy of Maran HaRav Shach זצ״ל Yahrzeit: 16 Cheshvan (ט״ז חשון)
As we approach the Yahrzeit of Maran HaRav Elazar Menachem Man Shach zt"l, we pause to remember a towering giant of Torah whose wisdom, humility, and love for Klal Yisrael illuminated generations. His life’s mission — the building and nurturing of Ponevez Yeshiva — continues to inspire thousands of talmidim worldwide. Today, under the leadership of his talmidim and successors, the Yeshiva stands as a living monument to his vision — a beacon of Torah, yiras Shamayim, and ahavas chesed, shaping the hearts and minds of future leaders of Klal Yisrael. Over the decades, it has become the crown jewel of the Torah world, nurturing generations of talmidei chachamim and leaders for Klal Yisrael.
- Rav Yehoshua Eichenstein sits down with Mishpacha to shed light on the draft law standoff
If the army were to undergo major reform and become a purely professional force, no longer an ideological or educational institution, and establishes professional tracks that fully preserve the way of life of chareidi recruits — would that change things?
If and when that happens, there will certainly be room for discussion. The gedolei Yisrael will need to examine the issue in depth and determine the proper course of action.
As I’ve said before, going forward things won’t stay the same. The current reality, in which young chareidi men who aren’t learning are nonetheless classified as yeshivah students in every sense, will no longer have a place.

ReplyDeleterather do it quietly or do it at home its hard to learn when the guy next to you think he's a baal korei
DeleteRunning a restaurant is a very difficult business in good times. Currently there is still infaltionary pressue, minimum wage increase, rents that are out of control and increased insurance expenses. Not surprised that many are trying to get out of this industry.
ReplyDeleteThe legacy of Rav Shach, as he told his talmidim many times during the years, was that Yeshiva bochurim were the holiest of us, those who learn Torah all day need protection and help. The chief purpose of Knesset participation was to allow anyone who wants to learn Torah all day to do so.
ReplyDeleteAny attempt to abuse this power for other purposes, as important as it may seem to the daas baalei battim, is a danger to Klal Yisroel.
Those who don't learn Torah, find this hard to understand. They claim the whole issue is about shmad and lessening ruchniyusidge standards in the Army. They don't have proper respect for Torah and do not appreciate that Klal Yisroel only exists through those learning Torah.
Did Ponevezh release statements while R Shach was alive? What a silly new trend.
ReplyDeleteCan we discuss how the polls were so off?
ReplyDeleteWhat we have learned in the latest election is how far people will go to protect their interests. The insiders knew he had no chance but they needed to keep up the charade to ensure large turnout which was need for secure Avi Schnall's reelection.
If Avi would actually deliver on his promises he would get votes the legitimate way. He only got 87% of Lakewood and pittance from his Monmouth County constituency. Why is he ignoring the needs of half his constituents? Had he gotten Howell EMS an ambulance instead of Hatzola he would've earned their votes. He is so out of touch and solely focused on manipulation. A day after last election he already said he never promised tuition relief. Route 9 will never be widened in our lifetime. But as he admitted in his "victory " speech, he learned from the best. Mayer Lichtenstein.
I have a dream that one day a legitimate opposition candidate will run and garner enough votes to end the reign of terror. It might come after were stuck with a 180 million dollar payback request from the state loan. Currently, the bill comes to approx 7K per Lakewood home.
Time for the nagging complainer about making noice during liening to switch seats
