R' Yoel Blumenthal Z''L

It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of R’ Yoel Blumenthal z”l of Lakewood. He was 42. R’ Yoel, an alumnus of Mesivta of Long Beach and a member of the Board of Directors of the yeshiva, was an outstanding ben Torah and baal chesed whose passing has plunged family and friends into mourning.
R’ Yoel is survived by his wife, Gili, and eleven children.

The levaya will be held on Sunday, 3 Teves/January 1, at Mesivta Shaar Hatalmud, located at 1951 New Central Avenue in Lakewood, at 10:30 a.m. (aprox) Kevurah will follow at the East 7th Street bais hachaim in Lakewood.

Lakewood Chaveirim reached out to Hamodia to share the following message with the community:

Shabbos Chanukah is one of the busiest travel times for Lakewood families. Hundreds of families make their way out of Lakewood, heading to Brooklyn, Monsey, upstate etc. Chaveirim urges travelers to take preventive action to avoid much heartache, as in the past years many have not had such pleasant Shabbos Chanukah memories.

Tips:
-Avoid Squankum road, as many travelers leaving Lakewood use Squankum Road as their exit point, it’s a one lane road that cannot accommodate another few hundred cars. Alternatives would be Cedarbridge avenue, County line road- Lanes Mill Rd., Route 70, or Route 9 to the 195 East. All these will take you to the Garden State Parkway.

5th night of Chanukah minhag to give Tzedaka

The minhag is to give Chanukah gelt to aniyim on the fifth night. The simple reason since the 5th night never falls out on shabbos. More and more Lakewood mishpachos among us are struggling financially. People can't afford the basics. In many areas and developments it's common for the gabbei tzedaka or rav to have residents knocking on the door unable to pay the monthly rent or mortgage. The high property taxes and cost of living is taking its toll on the tzibbur. We have many local tzedakos who help for shabbos, yom tov, simchas, camp etc.. But the day to day living is a struggle even in a two income household.  On this night of Chanukah think of a relative or neighbor who maybe treading water or drowning. Not always can you tell from the outside, people are embarrassed and put on a facade. Ask around and give tzedaka bderech kavod. Let's help and look after our own.

Dr. Shanik- Zika Travel ban still in effect for Miami Dade county until next month

In a Letter dated December 12, 2016 Lakewood pediatrician Dr. Shanik wrote there is still a travel ban to Certain areas of Florida.

 "While there have been no new cases of Zika Virus in the last 45 days there is still a partial ban on travel to Miami Dade county for at least the next month. This still means that no women of child bearing age and/or their husband should travel to Miami Dade county, Florida due to the possibility of contracting the Zika virus, also anyone  that travels to that area can bring the virus back and cause further spreading locally.... A few weeks ago a young father living in Lakewood learning in kollel, began feeling flu-like symptoms. After a routine checkup it was sadly discovered that he has leukemia. His brother, whom he cared for greatly, recently passed away after battling and suffering with the "illness" for many years.

Cold weather brings more cars to Clustered bus stops in Lakewood

The cold weather is here but for the Lakewood kids it means driving by car to the bus stops. The new busing system eliminated the close to home bus stops forcing parents to cluster at the main roads. That made parents, having to schlepp little babies and all other children while waiting for the bus. The freezing cold weather now has more parents driving to the bus stops so the kids can wait in the warm cars until the bus comes. This also delays the buses, since it takes longer now at each stop as kids come out of the cars to the bus. While much progress was made there are still kids without bus routes.

An elderly woman passed away in Lakewood earlier today when she was dragged under her own car in a tragic accident it happened in the parking lot of the bais Rivka Rochel school on River avenue in Lakewood  R''L. She was identified as Mrs. Devora  Goldfein A”H (lived in A country place senior community of S. lake drive). The Levaya will take place in Lakewood Sunday morning. Investigators are trying to figure out what happened. A Worker noticed her under her car and called 911 Lakewood first aid responded to the call.

Picture a middle-aged woman, living in England near many married children and grandchildren, reaping nachas from them and comfortably ensconced in the place she had lived her whole life. Her husband is a successful Mashgiach in the nearby yeshivah. She is a well-known mechaneches, frequently delivering shiurim for the women of the town.

Suddenly, there’s a change in plans. They are being asked to relocate, across the ocean, to far-off America.  How does she feel about this? “It’s good,” she tells her son. “Tatty has an opportunity for more harbotzas haTorah.” 
And so, Rebbetzin Miriam Salomon left her beloved Gateshead, left most of her family behind, and moved to Lakewood for her husband’s sake and for the sake of Klal Yisrael.

Let’s rewind a little, though. Harav Nosson Wachtfogel, zt”l, the original Mashgiach of Bais Medrash Govoha, was in his 90s, and was thinking ahead to the future of BMG and the position he would one day vacate. One night he had a dream, telling him that his successor was in England. After some investigation, he discovered Harav Mattisyahu Salomon, shlita, who was then the Mashgiach of the Gateshead yeshivah. He felt that this was the person he was looking for.

So began a new period in Lakewood, and among world Jewry.

Rav Mattisyahu Salomon became the beloved “Tatte fun Klal Yisrael” and his Rebbetzin became the “Mamme fun Klal Yisrael.” Harav Yeruchim Olshin, Rosh Yeshivah of BMG, said in his hesped for

After Chestnut shul closed down the minyan factory and canceled the half hour minyanim, there is interest for a new 9:30 am minyan in the south side of Lakewood.

The 9:30 Minyan of the Chestnut Shul which has just been stopped-due to construction of a new Simcha Hall-has been moved to the Chateau Park Vosikin Shul located at 189 Chateau Drive in the Basement. The Minyan will be starting this coming sunday December 11 & continue throughout the year. This will be the only Minyan there besides for Vosikin Shachris every morning with no 10:00 or later Shachris.

We owe alot of Hakaras Hatov to the many people who helped replace this Minyan to another location on the South side for those who need it.

LAKEWOOD - The Torah world was plunged into mourning Monday morning with the petirah of Rebbetzin Miriam Salomon, a”h, the wife of, ybl”c, Harav Mattisyahu Salomon, shlita, Mashgiach of Bais Medrash Govoha (BMG) of Lakewood. She was remembered as the ultimate eishes chaver whose life was defined by her absolute dedication to the Mashgiach as well as to the needs of his many talmidim and the myriads who seek his counsel. With her natural sense of selflessness and pure yiras Shamayim, she cared for and inspired all those who were privileged to come in contact with her. She was 75 years old.

“What a zechus she had … I depended entirely on my wife; she was a source of so much chizuk,” said Rav Salomon in his hesped, a mussar shmuess in itself in which the Mashgiach gave short explanations on each passuk in Eishes Chayil relating them one-by-one to his Rebbetzin. “Her whole life was filled with doing good for others, for big and for small, for so many in this town.”

Rav Yitzchok Dershowitz zt"l

It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rav Yitzchok Dershowitz of Lakewood, NJ. He was 69 years old. Rav Dershowitz sustained serious injuries upon falling on Simchas Torah and fell into coma. Since then, doctors battled on his behalf. He passed away on Erev Shabbos. Click Here! Rav Yitzchok was a son of Rav Aharon Menashe Dershowitz zt”l, who, prior to settling in Lakewood, served as the chief rabbi of Newport News, VA, as well as various cities across Wisconsin. A talmid of Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l, Rav Dershowitz spent his life between the hallowed walls of Beth Medrash Govoha, where has learned for many decades.

The Rosh Yeshiva is visiting on behalf of his kollel, Ohel Sarah. Dear Fellow Lakewooders,
I am a Lakewood resident who recently got a job in Manhattan. I am new to the commuting schedule and have no familiarity with Lakewood-Manhattan busses. If anyone can provide information and contact info for such daily transportation between Lakewood and Manhattan, both ways, it would greatly appreciated. Also, if there is information about davening Shacharis, that would helpful. 
Also, perhaps readers can advise whether it is better to take a bus than to drive myself, and what the cost considerations are. Other helpful info would be with regard to driving to the end of Jersey, parking somewhere there, and then taking a train into Manhattan, and whether that is a viable option.

Rare manuscript published in honor of a chasunah in Lakewood

At a wedding last night in Lakewood guests received a special gift. A sefer was published in honor of the simcha, based on an extremely rare manuscript of Rabbi Moses Isserles' (The Rama) Haggaaos to the Rambam's Moreh Nevukhim. Published for the first time ever.
