The drive from Manchester to Lakewood in Ocean County is about 15 miles, but according to data from the U.S. Census, it's also akin to turning back the clock more than 40 years. The median age of the population in Manchester is 65 years old, but in Lakewood, it is just 23.

Age data from the Census shows the two neighboring communities are among the oldest and the youngest in the state, sitting anomalously close in a state where different age groups are spread fairly distinctly throughout New Jersey.

The youngest parts of New Jersey start with the state's college towns -- New Brunswick and Glassboro for example both have median ages well under 30 years old.

Lakewood too is counted among this group. It's median age of 23.2 is almost exclusively due to the fact that it houses one of the largest yeshivas in the world, drawing young members of the Jewish Orthodox community from around the globe to attend.

The state's cities and urban suburbs are hubs for new immigrants, who are driving the state's population growth, and also skew younger.
