LAKEWOOD – Ebola has been ruled out as the virus that hospitalized a man early Wednesday morning and prompted responses from hazardous materials units. Authorities believe the man has Malaria instead.
New Jersey Department of Health spokeswoman Donna Leusner confirmed that the patient, who is reported as a Neptune resident, did not contract the virus.
"An individual from a non-Ebola impacted country is being treated for a travel-related illness," Leusner said in an email.
Police, fire and hazardous materials units responded early Wednesday morning to a condominium complex for a patient with a 105-degree fever and vomiting.
Details about the situation on Squankum Road and East Kennedy Boulevard are scarce. According to reports, the patient was hospitalized had traveled from Nigeria less than a month ago.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Ebola symptoms include fever, severe headache, fatigue, diarrhea, vomiting and unexplained bleeding or bruising. Symptoms can appear anywhere from two to 21 days after exposure, but the average is eight to 10 days.
