Potential candidate for NJ governor visits SCHI

NJ.com After serving as the nation’s ambassador to Germany for four years, Philip Murphy — a deep-pocketed Democratic donor and former Goldman Sachs executive — is now setting his sights on running for New Jersey governor. Murphy, 56, has been quietly making the rounds with influential Democrats. He’s hired prominent political consultants.
And he just registered a non-profit organization as a clearinghouse for ideas to improve New Jersey’s economy.  "We’ve not made a decision, but we’re very serious," Murphy said in a recent interview with The Star-Ledger while sitting next to his wife, Tammy, at his Red Bank office. "We’re doing a lot of soul searching."

His entrance into the race could transform the matchup New Jersey political watchers are expecting: A North Jersey versus South Jersey battle for the Democratic nomination between Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester) and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop.

And it comes as Democrats — stymied and overshadowed by Republican Gov. Chris Christie for most of the last five years — believe they’re near shoo-ins to reclaim the governor’s office in a post-Christie world. Though the next race for governor isn’t scheduled until 2017, it could come sooner if Christie leaves early to run for president
