Fighting it All Alone

When it comes to funding or the education of Lakewood students and how it pertains to the taxpayers there is no lack of press conferences, exclusive interviews , video reports, public letters, and a lot of noise explaining, commenting or reporting on it. This week a judge issued a ruling in response to a lawsuit that was going on for 7 years pertaining to the Lakewood school children and taxpayers. and not a word from the Vaad  not a word from the Igud  not a word from the BOE not a word from Agudah, not a word from the township committee, any political leadership or officials who always find time to chime in and put their face to the camera.

More importantly not even a Thank you to R' Aaron Lang who did this selflessly and single handedly with no support from anyone, as a matter of fact he was even demoted. No hakoras hatov was publicly shown on behalf of all Lakewood's children and taxpayers.

This  judge issued a ruling in response to a lawsuit filed by Reb  Aaron Lang a Lakewood teacher, attorney and BMG alumnus  going back to 2014 where he sued  NJ Department of Education challenging the funding formula in state aid how it applies to Lakewood since the state provides aid basef on the amount of public school students and does not factor in the mandated expenses of private school students. The judge ruled that Lakewood is not providing a thorough and efficient education to

On Monday NJ Gov. (See more Here on the assembly bill signed in January)

Conservatives groups republicans and family groups have strongly spoken out against this bill  "These bills are not about anti-bullying or anti-harassment policies, but instead they impose a .. belief system upon very young students that violates their religious beliefs. Parents have the constitutional right to direct the moral upbringing of their children."

-Excerpts of a pre purim covid update from a local pediatric practice: The new strain is now more contagious than ever...COVID-19 illness is spreading rapidly within our community and infecting people who have so far escaped infection. Women and children who have not yet been infected are the majority of new cases. Although fewer in number, men are also getting infected for the first time. We now have entered what appears to be a second phase, where the virus that is dominantly spreading is a new strain which infects people more easily and spreads more rapidly. The strain that is dominant in Lakewood right now is known as the British Variant. There are other strains that are dominant in other parts of the world. They also have the same mutation (change) as the British Variant that allows them to infect people more easily. However, some have an additional mutation that causes the virus to be able to repel the antibodies that a person develops after being infected by the original COVID-19 virus. — antibody-evading strains of the COVID-19 virus are infecting people around the world. There is reason for concern.

- Lakewood teachers union says the teacher who infected others with covid  could have just as easily contracted COVID at school or in the community, district officials said the 8 teachers dined out and got infected off site.

Seminary Acceptance Letters sent, uncertainty Remains Re; Vaccines, Deposits

The Seminaries in Eretz Yisroel sent acceptance letters yesterday to girls in 12th grade who applied for the 2021-202 school year. Parents have to sign up and register right away as well as put down a heft deposit. The question is will the seminaries even be open next year lots can change over the next 5 months.

Of concern to some parents is the policy regarding vaccinations as they are fearful of vaccinating their young daughters with limited data available to side effects. Will Israel demand that only those vaccinated may enter the country via a verified green passport will seminaries demand it? will the airlines demand it?

Parents are also worried about putting down hefty deposits with no guarantee that the seminaries will be fully open. The seminaries have so far not given any information to address these concerns and parents are pressured to make a decision.

Court Issues Ruling on Lang Lawsuit For Lakewood Funding

Today the court in NJ released its decision in the Lakewood school funding case.  Reb Aaron Lang, an attorney, musmach of  BMG and math teacher in the Lakewood school district  has single handedly filed a lawsuit going back to 2014  to get more funding for Lakewood students from the state. Due to the current funding formula Lakewood is not considered poor or an abbott district and only gets aid based on the 6000 public school students ratio to the total tax ratebles of the township and does not factor in the costs and expenses of the non public students such as special education and transportation.

Aaron Lang on Twitter: We have an unusual situation in which the judge ruled that the education in Lakewood does not meet the constitutional standard which is a big victory, yet the funding formula is nonetheless constitutional.

The ruling denied that the funding formula is unconstitutional but agreed that Lakewood cannot provide a Thorough and Efficient education to the public school students.  In the findings the ruling noted that the population growth in Lakewood has made it unsustainable for the school district and that the  district has been given recommendations by both the DOE and the State auditor for reigning in transportation and special education costs and by voting to remove the cap on property taxes. It mentioned appointed a State monitor to oversee the school district’s financial operations and to operate with a balanced budget. The continuation of State aid advances as an unreliable source of funding, and the obligation to reimburse the State over time, have contributed to the situation, as the school district’s financial problems persist, and unrestrained growth continues in the Township.
