- From Yated Neeman editorial

"We see evil battling good in the Holy Land and we see the Jews trying to defeat the forces of evil. We saw devastating tragedy on the holy day of Shabbos and Simchas Torah. So many killed, so many hurt, so many held by savages. And people wonder why. We see others giving their lives to fight the evil. And we see the world seek to block Israel from achieving victory over the evildoers. We see an American president and secretary of state seeking to pull defeat from the jaws of victory as they unite Arab countries and lobby Israeli politicians to break apart the coalition, dump the democratically elected Netanyahu, and establish a Palestinian state, which would be an existential threat to the Jews of Eretz Yisroel.

They plant articles in the media blaming Israel as the obstacle to peace and the threat to stability in the Middle East, while they push the long debunked so-called two-state solution. The talking points take hold and people here and in Israel buy into the message that Netanyahu is done and should go.

- Hamas published a new propaganda video showing signs of life from three hostages held in the Gaza Strip. In edited-together clips, the five-minute-long video shows soldiers Daniella Gilboa and Karina Ariev, and civilian Doron Steinbrecher, identifying themselves and asking the Israeli government to return them home.

- Another soldier  killed in Gaza bringing total death in ground operation to 220
Eliran Yeger,36, from Tel Aviv

- International Court of Justice in the Hague rejects Israel’s request to dismiss genocide case brought by S. Africa
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a provisional order that Israel must refrain from acts that could possibly lead to genocide but fell short of demanding that it stop the war.
Still, the mere issuing of a provisional order is viewed as a harsh diplomatic blow for Israel, one that gives South Africa’s genocide claim tacit legitimacy. "

The court says that Israel must “take all measures in its power” to prevent the commission of genocidal acts against the Palestinians as laid out in Article 2 of the Genocide Convention.
The court does not grant South Africa’s demand for an immediate unilateral  ceasefire against Hamas.
Israel must prevent the killing or injuring of Gaza’s Palestinians, must prevent conditions calculated to wholly or partly destroy Gaza’s populace, and must prevent conditions intended to prevent births among Gazans.
The measures are supported by an overwhelming 15-2 majority on the bench, including by its US president Joan Donoghue. Israel’s Aharon Barak is one of the dissenters

- The IDF says it carried out strikes against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon in response to recent attacks on northern Israel.

- A editorial in the New York Post newspaper states that "The IDF suffers casualties to protect Gazans, while President Biden pushes for the fantasy of a peace agreement." That is: "Israel sacrifices its soldiers to protect Palestinian citizens, even though Hamas insists that it has  Zero responsibility for the safety of the Gazans," it said.

Mid-Winter Break or Yeshiva Week

Repost:
Midwinter vacation in the yeshiva world community has always been referred to as, you guessed it midwinter break, Yeshiva Week was not in the vernacular of the Torah community. Yeshiva bochurim had an off shabbos and the girls had midwinter vacation. Recently,  the Yeshiva week term has been adopted in describing the 2 week vacation period from mid - end of January. Advertisements and news articles have been referencing yeshiva week for  the midwinter getaways to South Florida, skiing trips or other destinations.

The term Yeshiva Week is actually not new at all, it has been around  for 30 -40 years among the Jewish day school and Modern Orthodox communities. Not too long ago, when it came to winter vacation, Jewish day schools were on the same schedule as other public and private schools across the country. Vacation time was determined by the xmas and New Year calendar at the end of December and continued until some time after New Year. As the Jewish day school education system grew, schools have changed the calendars to have vacation towards the middle-to-end of January. As a way to differentiate it from xmas week it was called yeshiva week.

Call it what you want but the mid winter vacation has taken on a life of its own with must do getaways. Perhaps the "yeshiva week" vacation has influenced the yeshivish mid winter vacation to go over the top leaving parents with no choice but to plan a trip and go away. Staying home is not an option and parents have to take off from work. Instead of a relaxing weekend at home it has become a chol hamoed in the winter. There's been some push back from schools but the trend is pulling the other way as lofe begins to get back to normal post covid or perhaps not that normal.

Lakewood is zoche to have him advocating on behalf of our kids and our viability as a home to the multitude. Lakewood kids have the right to a thorough and efficient education. They will not get one until the formula is fixed. You cannot efficiently plan, remediate learning deficiencies, or build an infrastructure if funding is depends on the discretion of Trenton. Funding has to be formulaic and certain.

Our teachers and kids should not have worry every year that they won't be paid and schools will close. Our citizens should not have to run to the state capital every year with palms open to beg the governor to do us a favor by loaning us money to keep our schools open, thereby encumbering future generations with debt and financial insolvency. A Lang

Sunday's Star Ledger feature article on Prof. Tractenberg and his efforts to fix the school funding formula as applied to Lakewood: "The state most recently loaned the district $50 million, though it had requested $93 million. That latest IOU will bring the district’s total indebtedness to $156.4 million, according to figures provided in December by a Department of Education spokesman.

Lang and Tractenberg maintain that the state is not interested in resolving the funding imbalance in Lakewood now, but in delaying the issue until after Gov. Phil Murphy leaves office in two years. It is what Tractenberg calls “a breathtaking default of responsibility.”

Israel At War 21 Reserve Soldiers Killed HYD

Israel at war day 109

- Reuters: Israel  and Hamas agree in principle to a pause/ceasefire for a month in exchange for release of hostages. A few details remain

- IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari says ground troops have killed more than 100 Hamas operatives in the west Khan Younis area today, during intensive battles.

- White house Communications director John Kirby says, "discussions are sober and serious" about securing a hostage deal between Israel and Hamas.

- Hamas rejects Israel's proposal for a 2 month pause in exchange for releasing all hostages

- Hezbollah fires missile at IDF base in Miron, base lightly damaged

- According to new details from the IDF's investigation of yesterday's blast in central Gaza, killing 21 soldiers, the Hamas operatives fired an RPG missile at a building while hiding in a nearby plantation. Two buildings, some 600 meters from the Israeli border, had been rigged up with around 20 mines for detonation. The RPG fire from a few dozen meters away likely set off the mines, causing the structures to collapse and killing 19 soldiers inside and near them.

In deadliest incident of Gaza war, 21 soldiers killed as 2 buildings collapse in blast
Hamas causes buildings collapse - 21 IDF soldiers dead, several injured. Total killed since Gaza ground op is 221.

This news comes after three soldiers were killed in battle the day before.

Hamas forces on Monday fired a rocket propelled grenade on multiple adjacent structures which, along with landmines which the IDF forces had collected and brought into the buildings, caused a total collapse, which in turn killed 21 soldiers and injured several others. The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. in al-Muasi in central Gaza.

In addition, a separate rocket propelled grenade was fired on an IDF tank which killed two IDF soldiers and injured two others.

It was unclear if the soldiers had violated procedures by bringing the landmines into the structures with them and also unclear how much the collapse of the building was caused by the RPG versus the secondary landmines explosions.
The IDF forces who were harmed were mostly reservists assigned to clear certain areas of dangerous items, such as mines.

Rescue activities went on for hours, It was unclear what happened to the Hamas attackers.

The IDF released the names of 10 soldiers of the 21 that were killed.
