Lakewood second in Highest Charitable contribution in NJ

Lakewood comes in second in  Highest Charitable contribution in NJ

Over 1.5 million New Jersey taxpayers made charitable contributions totaling to $6.3 billion in 2016.
The zip code that reported the second highest amount of charitable contributions was Lakewood, home to a large and religious Orthodox Jewish community, where 7,740 taxpayers donated about a total $135 million. The report claims only about 24 percent of that taxpayers in that zip code made charitable contributions.

As for zip code that donated the most amount of money, it’s 07078 in Short Hills which reported about $180 million in 2016. read more HERE

  1. I am sure Lakewood donted more than triple that amount however most people In Lakewood do not list on their tax return every time they hand over a few dollars or more to a Meshulach

  2. This only counts those who take itemized deductions, not those who claim the standard deduction on their tax returns. That is why their is a low percentage of charitable contributions in Lakewood and in people earning under $100k. The higher the income, the more likely it is that someone will itemize their deductions.

  3. Lakewood people are constantly giving out Tzedaka spontaneously at their front door in Shul over the phone at Dinners and Parlor meetings. Most do not itemize and list all these donations and transactions on their Tax returns. Only some of the big businesses and Corporations who set up Charity accounts. If you add up all the money given as mentioned above which are not deducted on Tax returns would be in the 10s of Millions
