- Oros Bais Yaakov signs $1.35 million lawsuit settlement with Jackson zoning board  Jackson Township's Zoning Board today formally a Consent Order to finally settle a Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) lawsuit originally filed against them in 2014 by Oros Bais Yaakov following the Board's denial of their school application.  (AP) A computer outage at the Federal Aviation Administration brought flights to a standstill across the U.S. on Wednesday, with hundreds of delays quickly cascading through the system at airports nationwide.

The FAA ordered all U.S. flights to delay departures until 9 a.m. Eastern, though airlines said they were aware of the situation and had already begun grounding flights.

Tax Increase: LFD votes To Increase Budget

 Tonight a special hearing will take place at the fire station 733 Cedarbridge Avenue 7:00pm. The Lakewood Fire commissioners will vote on the budget for 2023 which is now over $10 Million and voter approval is not needed to pass it. FAA News reports. A typical new duplex, such as in Oak and Vine,  assessed at $560,000, will pay $560 in 2023, a $100 increase over the 2022 tax of $460. An older townhouse which is assessed at $417,900 will pay $417.90, a $75 increase over the 2022 tax of $342.68.

According to budget documents obtained by FAA News, the tax increase is due primarily to firefighter contract salary increases, a large health benefit increase due to more family coverage (additional firefighters becoming eligible for expanded coverage) and health benefit cost increase. Additionally, capital appropriations have increased by $1,250,000 to $1,900,000 for buildings renovations, a new fire engine, hose replacement, a rehab & care unit, the increased debt service for the new Seagrave 75' Aerial scope etc..

Rabbonim hung signs before shabbos notifying it would be permissible to say kiddush levana with a bracha if there's a visible moon. They also said there's no issue with mitten that some observe on the night of January 6. Update: In New Square they said kiddush Levana with a bracha on Motzei shabbos before maariv at 7pm. Based on a chasam sofer that you can say it a day later.

- Lakewood police still searching for suspect  Authorities are searching for a man who was brandishing a machete and screaming profanities outside a building on Monmouth Avenue Thursday evening. the man was last seen walking east on 9th Street. He is described as approximately 5-foot-10, with a heavy set build and wearing a white and purple jacket.

- Judge overturns yeshivas dormitory approval

FAA Ocean County Superior Court Administrative Judge Marlene Ford today overturned Lakewood Township Planning Board's approval of a dormitory expansion for Yeshiva Toras Chaim, located at 999 Ridge Avenue, saying that the Board lacked jurisdiction to approve a dormitory which the Township Committee has not deemed to be a permitted use in the residential zoning district.

-Earlier this evening yeshiva bochurim learning at R' Nosson Steins Yeshiva at 10th and Monmouth in Lakewood  were chased by a black man wielding a manchette, reports say the man chased them into the building before he fled the scene. police are on patrol and no motive was given

- FAAnews Lakewood monthly crash reports this month was higher than usual. Total Crashes for December is 503, resulting in  39 injuries and 22 Pedestrians struck. November numbers Total Crashes 482 resulting in 38 injuries with 15 pedestrians struck. 

Crash totals for 2022 nearly 5,500 car accidents, Fatalities 10,  Pedestrians struck 154 That is an average of nearly 3 pedestrians struck by vehicles each week, and 1 fatality every 5 weeks! see full story on FAA. The mayor was asked about th high accident rates and  blamed it on bad drivers and proposing more education on safety to young drivers and called for more enforcement. No mention of upgrading infrastructure or other factors that contributed to the traffic and dangerous roadways was made.

- McCarthy again lacks the votes to win. With the vote ongoing, McCarthy already lacks the votes needed to win, an indication that his negotiations have failed to win over his critics. A work shop to train therapists and social workers in family 

This Sunday January 8 Dr. Joshua Coleman PHD of San Francisco Will be giving a workshop in the Nefesh international conference at the Hilton, Parsippany NJ for Mental health professionals.  Dr Coleman is a world renown psychologist, author, and speaker.

The field of psychology has largely ignored the realities of estranged parents and/or children in theory, research, and practice. While healthcare professionals frequently encounter estranged parents and children in their practice, few of these professionals have undergone training (either pre- or post-licensure) that adequately addresses the specificity of the trauma afflicting this population, facilitates clients’ growth, or enhances the likelihood of reconciliation. In fact, many therapists who provide guidance to estranged family members inadvertently worsen the estrangement rather than improve it.

- Lakewood committee meeting recap: Committeeman Meir lichtenstein and Menashe Miller  bypassed fellow  committeeman Akerman and instead nominated Ray Coles for Mayor of 2023  for a 7th consecutive term instead of keeping to what used to be a yearly rotation. Coles Miller and Lichtenstein voted yes for the mayoral pick, Akerman voted no and committeeman Delia's vote was inaudible. Miler was voted as deputy mayor 5-0.  Coles deflected questions by the public who asked why meetings are still held remotely. He said that he found that public participation has gone up tremendously with the remote meetings, ironically there was no one from the public who spoke up but 2 emails sent in. The mayor said more people reach out to them via phone calls instead of waiting for the monthly meetings. As for the health of Committeeman Delia the mayor said it is up to Mike himself to decide if he wants to run for reelection Lichtenstein said Mike was sharp at a recent meeting. Committeeman Issac Akerman thanked the public for voting him in again, Lichtenstein said he plans on doing good things for the township, Miller mentioned  opening Vine st and the light at James and Williams. The mayor spoke about the traffic problem and blamed the county and state again.

More of the Same

 There's a saying attributed to Albert Einstein “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” It is business as usual in Lakewood township reappointing the mayor for a 7th term and not keeping a rotation as has been done previously. The mayor is from the democrat minority as the republicans have a 3-2 majority. Committeeman Issac Akerman has not been reappointed as mayor since he served in 2013 why has this not happened? The traffic and quality of life issues just keep getting worse yet nothing is done besides lip service and some talking points released to friendly media. Blame is always placed on the state and county while deflecting any responsibility. Just last week residents sat in weekly Cedarbridge Ave morning traffic for over 45 minutes due to scheduled construction that was not supposed to happen. These hard working Lakewood taxpayers who live paycheck to paycheck come late to work and begin their day with frustration losing money having to work extra and easing hours daily in their cars. The politicians and leaders ignore it and laugh off those who complain about traffic. 

The committee also makes it hard for the public to speak by using the covid excuse to keep meetings remotely while the town is fully back to normal. The public is restricted in reaching out to the committee as they enact rules for public comments by having to email 7 hours before the meeting and don't have an opportunity to ask follow up questions as they continue to play shtick with it. The meetings are also scheduled at an inconvenient time at 5:30 pm when most people are busy. Despite the talk of being transparent, the public is restricted and left out of voicing its concerns. Some members of the public have commented on media reports of a committeeman who can't physically make it to the meetings for the reason they keep it remote. "Why do they continue on their own merry way without informing the public about what is going on? What would they have done with an unwell member before COVID forced them to have virtual meetings? why cant they have a hybrid system allowing both in person and remote participation? Is this all about not being open to criticism from the public? 

  People keep calling for the Faulkner act which changes the form of government in NJ municipalities with direct elections for mayor, Yet none of that  has taken place yet, in the meantime there will be two open seats on the township as Coles and Delia are up for reelection. Maybe new candidates will run for township but change is not expected to happen anytime soon, unless new blood is voted in.

  The Lakewood township REORGANIZATION Meeting will take place virtually on Zoom tomorrow morning JANUARY 2, 2023  Democrat Ray Coles will be sworn in as Mayor for a 7th term even though there is a Republican majority. On the Agenda is appointing members to all township boards, designating Lawyers newspapers and other professional services for the township.
