US Supreme Court Issues ruling in Case Filed by Lakewood Rabbi Challenging Murphys Restrictions

Updated: The U.S. Supreme Court sided with Lakewood Rabbi Yisrael Knopfler .

The court sided with a New Jersey reverend and rabbi who sued over health orders put in place by Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy and state officials that imposed capacity limits at places of worship. There were no noted dissents from that ruling. The justices ordered the lower courts to decide the disputes in line with a 5-4 ruling they issued on Thanksgiving eve in a New York lawsuit. That case saw the court bar authorities from enforcing attendance restrictions at churches and synagogues that New York had put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19. Technically NJ could still enforce its restrictions  since there is no injunction as the supreme court pushed the case to be ruled on by the lower court. (The Hill)

Ruling from Scotus here and below

Tax Increase LFD Budget increases to $8.2 Million, elections moved to November

The Lakewood Fire district will hold a virtual board meeting tonight 7:00 pm introducing the 2021 Budget for total of  amount of $8,234,037.00. Last years budget was  $6,915,734. In 2017 it was at $5,019,295.The residents usually get to vote on the budget but this year with a expected move of the elections to November it is not clear if and when the public will have a say on the tax increase of the budget, there will be a public hearing January 11 to adopt the budget.

In another move there is a resolution on the agenda to move the annual fire elections to the Time of the November General Election something the critics have been calling for a while instead of holding a separate election in February. Supposedly part of the reason is the high cost of mail in ballots for the February elections although last week there was a vote to add $650,000 in capital expenses with no option for mail in voting.

What we are seeing is the legitimization of a lifestyle that is the antithesis of everything for which a Torah Yid stands.  These displays of unfettered pursuits of gashmiyus at a level of “sophistication” that would have been simply unheard of or even unthought of as recently as ten years ago, or even five years ago, are the new normal. A teen today doesn’t even think of it is a “new” normal. It is just normal. Do we realize where we are? Where we are going? Ads for “encrusted” and “infused” cuts of meat and steaks that cost $40 and $50 a pound are in our publications. We are putting the Yevonim to shame. Erev Shabbos Chanukah Halachos Uminhagim

Halachos for this year erev shabbos chanukah based in part on Rabbi Felder's sefer Shiurei Halacha.

-One who is traveling should give themselves extra time for arrival in order to daven mincha and light chanuka candles
-One should light the Ner  Chanuka before the Ner shabbos  but it should be done not less then within a half hour to shkia or 5 to 10 minutes prior to licht benching.
-The Mishna Berura writes its preferable to daven Mincha before one lights ner Chanukah on Erev Shabbos since it would be a תרתי דסתרי, meaning if one considers it to be night after the plag how can you go and daven mincha afterwards.  However of one can not do so he may daven after lighting the menorah  especially if it means davening with a minyan as oppose to davening before b'yechidos.
-The lights must be capable of burning until 30  minutes after nightfall they should be lit for an hour and forty five minutes. Therefore, one must be  careful on erev Shabbos to use sufficient oil or long candles that can burn until this time.
-Children should also use long shabbos candles so their menorah will burn longer.
-A wife can light shabbos candles after her husband lit the menorah and does not have to wait for everyone else to finish lighting
-we insert  על הניסים in Benching and shmona esrei If it is mistakenly omitted, it is not repeated
-According to the mishna Berura we do not give or receive  chanuka gifts on shabbos unless its needed -for shabbos

For many Jewish Brooklynites, New York State Route 440, a thoroughfare located entirely in Staten Island, acts as a connector between Brooklyn and Lakewood, New Jersey. As they speed along, few take note that just off the highway, in the Greenridge section of Staten Island, there is an impressive yeshivah campus and community, a true makom Torah that was founded by Rav Moshe Feinstein and has been led by his son Rav Reuven ever since. Rav Reuven’s home is nestled right behind the large yeshivah building with its characteristic white columns, which houses both the beis midrash and dormitory.

JHS: A Humble Giant: The Early Years of Rav Aharon Leib Steinman

A greatly respected Torah leader of recent times, Rav Aharon Leib Steinman (1914-2017) spent the last 60 years of his long life in Bnei Brak. Prior to that were quite a few stops along the way, each stage shaping his development.

A childhood in Brisk led to his studying in the local Toras Chesed Yeshiva of Rav Moshe Sokolovsky. Escaping the Polish army draft to Switzerland, he joined a Yeshiva there, eventually marrying and making his way to Israel.

A Unique Shabbos Chanukah This Year

This year  שבת חנוכה will not be parshas מקץ but only on Parshas וישב It happens 10 times in 100 years. The last time shabbos chanuka was only vayeshev was 20 years ago in the year 5761. This year is the rare occurrence of Chanuka starting on a Friday - which means that שבת פרשת מקץ is not Chanukah anymore - which causes the reading of the weekly Parsha Haftorah, which is almost never read, since the Haftorah of שבת חנוכה almost always supersedes it. But this year is an exception. If you ever wondered why a Hoftorah for Miketz is printed in our Chumashim since it's never said anyway - the answer is it's printed there for this year. Remember the wisdom of שלמה המלך ordering to cut the baby in half in order to determine who the real mother is? That's the story of הפטורת מקץ which we haven't gotten to read for 20 years. (source).. Miketz is not on Chanukah 10 times. In 5703, 5706, 5710, 5730, 5733, 5737, 5757, 5761, 5781, and 5784, Miketz fell out on the 4th of Teves, just after Chanukah ends.

The usual Haftorah of Parshas Vayeshev the נביא עמוס  rebukes Israel for a lengthy list of sins and warns that harsh punishment is on its way. Amos outlines the ways that the wealthy in Israel oppress the poor The Jews had been guilty of the three cardinal sins: idolatry, forbidden relationships and murder. But
