Review: Moshe Reichmann Building for Eternity

 The Guy Behind The Counter

Jewish Book Reviews and the view from The Guy Behind The Counter at your local Bookstore.

Moshe Reichmann is someone who everyone knows or at least thinks they know all about.

Most curious people have read at least some contemporaneous articles about this great philanthropists seeming meteoric rise and spectacular fall.

So you’d wonder, why would Artscroll publish his biography, what would it add and why now now?

Anonymous Lakewood Vaad Stokes Divisiveness Mocking the Residents

The Lakewood Vaad has posted a unsigned chest pumping self congratulatory article titled "Hakoras Hatov to Lakewood's staunch four Thousand" on its affiliated website, thanking the 4000 strong who voted for Phil Murphy while the Lakewood frum vote went 60/40 for Jack Ciattarelli.

The timing, anonymity and content of the letter is suspicious, is this part of a strategy? time will tell.

The Vaad blames anyone who did not follow them as creating in your face machlokes and ruining the achdus of the kehilla. More so, the tone of the letter subliminally mocks the 60 percent of Yidden in Lakewood who voted for Jack Ciattarelli. The letter claims it was siyata dishmaya that the 40 percent who did vote for Murphy will allow officials and askonim to pursue the vital interests of the kehila "without the sneers of a democratic governor".  The article concludes with some more self Gratulation  by backing a winner scoring a 2.5 on a scale of 3. The letter ended with a parting shot to those who voted for Ciattarelli as the vaad scored themselves a tiet on backing a candidate with values close to our hashkafa  "as both candidates supported radical leftist social policies'  and that as a kehilla we can all do better next time.

A glaring omission was the very fact that there was a split among the Roshei Yeshiva on who to vote for, as Rav Yeruchom Olshin specifically did not sign or support the Vaad for this election and told bnei hayeshiva vote for Jack as did many Rabbonim and Roshei Yeshiva.

The Letter omits the name of Rav Osher ben Chana Frumit and makes no mention of how it factored in the klals voting decisions.

Statement from the Conference of Synagogue Rabbonim of Agudath Israel.

It has come to our attention that the so called "International Beit Din" (IBD) has issued multiple heteirim for married women to remarry without a get, utilizing various methods and arguments.

Gedolei Haposkim and multitudes of Rabbonim from across the spectrum have publicly decried the actions of the IBD and claim that their heteirim have no merit. The Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah and Conference of Synagogue Rabbonim of Agudas Yisrael join them in protest. Throughout the generations such matters were dealt with exclusively by universally recognized, foremost Gedolei Haposkim, in conjunction with other Gedolei Hador, and we firmly state that it is unprecedented and unacceptable for these matters to be dealt with in any other manner.

Superior Court Judge Benjamin Bucca, at a hearing on Rabbi Osher Eisemann’s bid for a new trial, ordered an additional hearing with testimony to determine if the bookkeeper’s claims, presented in a certification as newly discovered evidence, would hold up on cross-examination if he were to order a new trial. The judge also said the next hearing will focus on whether the new evidence could have been discovered before the first trial in 2019 and, if so, if it was an error by Eisemann’s defense attorneys to have missed it. If it was an error, that possibly could lead to a new trial on the grounds of ineffective assistance of counsel. read more at APP

Rt 9 Proposal Eliminates Turning Lanes at Central & Hurley Intersection, Convert it to Northbound Lane

Updated: This project  in the making since 2016  is closer to  being implemented  as LNN reports a DEP study ordered by the county has been done.

The NJDOT proposal to ease traffic on Rt 9 Through Lakewood calls to eliminate left turning lanes from Rt 9 onto Central avenue and on to Hurley. By doing so it will open an additional lane on Route 9 going north bound which will take away the bottle neck that causes a mile back up at that intersection. Officials noted that these left turning lanes only allow a few cars to turn per cycle of the trffic light. So, If you are coming from 7-11 on rt 9 North you will not be able to turn let onto Central avenue. Your only option is to go from James street to Sunset or to John street to Cedarbridge and back up from Hurley. Same for motorist traveling from Rt 9 South coming from rt 88 you will not have an option to turn left onto Hurley at the gas station you will have to turn left at rt 88 or at John street.

Another Chizuk Meeting for Parents of Alienated Children

The Broken Ties organization held another meeting to support parents who are suffering from alienation. An asifas chizuk was held recently in Brooklyn which drew a large crowd and on this past Motzei Shabbos there was an asifa in Lakewood.  Broken Ties is a frum organization to help parents whose children refuse to have any contact with them.  Most of the cases are children of broken homes when parents get divorce and the children are turned against one or both parents. But in many situations the parents are married with functioning families and yet the children are alienated from the parents.  These children are frum, attending Bais Yaakov and yeshivas, some of these children are now married and learning in Kollel. Satan got his hand on them to rip them away from their parents.

Broken Ties is providing support and chizuk to the many parents who are suffering by arranging lectures, workshops, shabbatons, and education to understand the cause of alienation. Some of these parents are mechanchim and rabbonim in their own right.

- Jack Ciattarelli campaign update: Unofficially, 66,405 votes separate Jack Ciattarelli (1,219,906) and Governor Phil Murphy (1,285,351) – a margin of 2.6% of the vote. As a result of Governor Murphy’s rush to implement early voting, technology errors resulted in voters being forced to cast approximately 70,000 provisional ballots which have yet to be counted. We still have vote-by-mail ballots outstanding and approximately 70,000 provisional ballots to be counted. At this time, we do not expect the provisional vote count to end with Jack Ciattarelli in the lead. However, that count may reduce the margin for Governor Murphy enough to warrant a full recount.

 - “We understand that Governor Murphy and his team are embarrassed that in a state with 1 million more registered Democrats and where Joe Biden won by 16 points, they are leading by such a small margin, “But the Murphy campaign’s attempt to spin their lackluster performance will have no impact on our decision.”

Election Update and Analysis

New statement from Jack Ciattarelli  "The governor's victory speech last night was premature. No one should be declaring victory or conceding the election until every legal vote is counted." Says his decision on recount may not be for a week or two.

-The era of trusting political askanim in the frum community is changing as was evident in the election results from Brooklyn - Lakewood. Control of the bloc vote is not a guarantee anymore as people will do what they want regardless of what they are told through letters of roshei yeshiva and rabbonim, robocalls and the media. There is a mistrust by the public of political askanim of having been owned by politicians or other factors that come along with politics.

- People just don't  vote  because they either have given up as there is no  new candidates  locally,  and dont feel there is much to change with the same incumbants and no teem limits. some find it hard to go out and vote with long lines at polling stations. This year 1100  took advantage of early voting

- Could Lakewood have made the difference? It is hard to know as the numbers are not final but what is clear from the results is there was a low turnout and people stayed home. You can't compare an off year gov race to the 2017 elections with Trump on the ticket as some pundits have done.
