Lakewood Rabbanim Release Tznius Awareness Letter

Chodesh Sivan 5786

As the summer months come upon us, we feel a responsibility to publicize a halachah which pertains specifically to this time of year when breaches in tzniyus of dress are unfortunately more common.
It is incumbent upon women to know the halachos of tzniyus well. Additionally, husbands and fathers must recognize the possible pitfalls and guide their wives and daughters properly so that they dress in a way befitting Bnos Yisroel. When women wear clothes that do not conform with tzniyus, they cause men to transgress serious issurim. (See Gemora Ta'anis 24a.)
In our times, tzniyus in general needs much chizuk, but we would like to highlight a specific breach in tzniyus which many, and even well-meaning people, are not careful with. This is the issue of tight clothes, whether because they are too small or whether due to their design. Any article of clothing which accentuates the form of the body is unacceptable. This is a common issue with all types of clothes and specifically T-shirts.
It pains us to know that many stores sell clothes that do not conform with the halachos of tzniyus. Recently, however, form fitting tops have become popular. At times, even those who are trying to be careful about this cannot easily find T-shirts that are tzniyus l'halachah. Therefore one must be careful while shopping not to purchase clothes that are not tzniyusdik. It is important to note that since most stores/vendors will cater to the requests of their customers, it is a mitzvah to bring to their attention and to request of them to provide only tzniusdik clothes. One must be careful to check the clothes that she owns to ensure that they are acceptable. Just as with every question of halachah, a question of tzniyusdik clothing must be dealt with properly and not disregarded due to financial or personal concern.

Teachers bear a great responsibility to dress tzniyusdik k'halachah in every way since the students tend to emulate them.

In the zechus of vigilance in the mitzvah of tzniyus may we merit that the Shechinah reside among us. May the zechus of this great mitzvah protect all those who are careful to keep the halachos of tzniyus, and especially those who encourage others to do so, and may they be blessed with all goodness. May we all be zocheh to the Geulah Sheleimah b'meheirah.

  1. When the satmar in wmbsg came out with tznius letters the litvaks all made fun. Now Lakewood rabbanim are signing the same letters and talmidim are visiting the Rebbe. I guess it's better than travelling to Queens for gimmel tammuz.

    2. There's a famous letter from the Chofetz Chaim instructing rabbonim to publicize in their kehillot that women should be careful with tzniyut.
There's a copy of the letter in Satmar Fourth St basement on the paper towel dispenser.

    3. It's not the only letter the CC wrote. His first sefer was on honesty in weights and measures. He wrote extensively about the evil of machlokes.
Are they hanging up as well?

  3. Will the rosh yeshiva of ponovezh RCPB be invited to give a shiur in BMG like the former rosh yeshiva RSM was invited a few months ago after losing the din torah?

    1. Get your facts straight r Shmuel markowitz won the din Torah with Rav tzimbalist who Rav elyashiv backed. In fact the kahanemann side went against the psak and went to court. R markowitz lost in court not in Bais din. R Chaim Peretz was appointed Rosh yeshiva against the psak of Bais din. So why should he give a shiur in Bmg?

Ahh, because it's not a mainstream issue which needs addressing and which has people posting snarky comments about it. Got it.

  8. Regarding the letter about tzniyus, last summer I had a very hard time finding clothing that conform to tzniyus guidelines. I usually avoid non Jewish clothing stores in the summer because the clothing are not tzniyusdig. Imagine my surprise when I found many tzniyusdig options to choose from in TJ Maxx, while I came home empty handed from the Jewish stores. I am not exactly known as a big machmir in this area, so if this happened to me, we are not in a very good place...
