18 Years and Nothing Has Changed

In 2006 The during a contentious elections Bnei yeshiva and Lakewood residents were angry and upset at the Vaad's rule and control. The Vaad at the time put out a letter (see below) and promised to restructure and better adapt and respond to the concerns of Lakewood residents. The Vaad promised to form a "Ichud Rabbonim" to ensure the needs of the entire Lakewood Kehilla.

Fast Forward 18 years later it is now  2024/2025. The vast majority no longer listens, cares about or trust the vaad. Lakewood's population has exploded close to the 4th largest city in NJ, tens of thousands of yidden moved into the surrounding towns, yet we are at the same position no new members were added  not one Rav (outside the vaad)  in Lakewood has any say on the vaad. Its controlled by the same few who remain anonymous, were never elected, yet continue to use the koach Hatzibbur, with some critics  questioning  conflicts of interest.

Like a bear waking up from hibernation the vaad awakens once year a few days before elections with non stop robo calls and fliers dictating who to vote for without holding any public meetings. The deals and promises from elected officials are kept secret while the grant money ends up in the same usual pockets. High Taxes,Traffic quality of life issues continue on.  Talk about The bloc vote and getting the attention of hit officials with a strong voter turnout doesn't seem to benefit the tzobbur at large  but only a few well connected who somehow always get the funding.

The vaad endorsed incumbents for township committee  didnt  have the decency to reach out to the Lakewood community pre or post election, not even  a thank you to the voters! The vaad has been silent too, following all the pre election noise.  The "we work behind the scenes excuse" no longer holds as there is no trust.

The needs of the kehilla and quality of life are continuously ignored to a point where people have given up and are told to just accept the reality or move away.  Yet they call themselves representatives of the entire town. Any opposition is quashed in the name of not keeping the "Achdus" .

Alot went on over the past few years and there's been not a peep out of anyone besides for some election time articles, puff pieces and PR through their controlled media outlets.

They  had more than enough time to regroup refocus and truly represent the needs of the entire Lakewood tzibbur perhaps it is  time to let others represent the community through a process that is fair and transparent that would truly look out for everyone.

18 years ago the vaad wrote "We have asked Meir and Menashe to implement a forceful program of change in the way town hall is run and operates, "This will include some significant personnel changes and restructuring, backed by a continued aggressive advocacy for the needs of each and every individual in Lakewood."

Well the 2 incumbents didn't even have the decency to campaign in front of the residents while the township continues to hide from the public with zoom meetings.

It's time for the Vaad to dismantle and close down. Let the rabbonin and tax paying residents decide what is best for them.

Article in APP from 2006

Lakewood, NJ - The Vaad, an influential council of Orthodox Jewish leaders, will be restructured to better respond to the concerns of the township’s fast-growing Orthodox community, the organization announced in a letter to Orthodox residents.

A council of rabbis is to be formed for the purpose of giving guidance to the 11-member Vaad, which issues political endorsements and takes positions on various civic matters.

“It is the intent . . . to place the Vaad under the guidance of the Ichud Rabbonim and through that to ensure that the needs of the entire Kehilla (community) are appropriately met,” the letter stated.

The announcement of the Vaad’s restructuring was included in a letter in which the Vaad also made its election endorsements for the municipal, House and U.S. Senate races. “We sincerely recognize that the Vaad . . . must adapt in order to better represent the needs of a growing and diverse (religious community),” the letter stated

LAKEWOOD — The Vaad, an influential council of Orthodox Jewish leaders, will be restructured to better respond to the concerns of the township's fast-growing Orthodox community, the organization announced in a letter to Orthodox residents.

A council of rabbis is to be formed for the purpose of giving guidance to the 11-member Vaad, which issues political endorsements and takes positions on various civic matters. "It is the intent . . . to place the Vaad under the guidance of the Ichud Rabbonim (council of rabbis) and through that to ensure that the needs of the entire Kehilla (community) are appropriately met," the letter stated. The Vaad was created by leaders at Beth Medrash Govoha, the country's largest rabbinical college and center for Talmudic studies, which has long been the magnet that's drawn Orthodox families to Lakewood. Now, however, many of the newer Orthodox residents have no connection to the yeshiva, which has injected a new dynamic into town politics, say close observers of the Lakewood scene.

"We sincerely recognize that the Vaad . . . must adapt in order to better represent the needs of a growing and diverse (religious community)," the letter stated.

Joe Atlas, a Vaad member and spokesman for the group, said it has become increasingly difficult for the Vaad to respond to all the various concerns of residents as Lakewood's population grows. "As much as the Vaad tries to meet the needs of everybody in the community, it cannot meet with every single person," Atlas said.

The Vaad comprises 11 Orthodox leaders. The council of rabbis will include between 60 and 70 religious leaders from Lakewood's Jewish congregations, Atlas said.

The expectation is that the rabbis will be better able to keep their fingers on the pulse of the community and bring concerns to the Vaad, Atlas said.

In its endorsement letter, the Vaad wrote, "As we see it, municipal government needs to drastically and rapidly change across the board and become much more responsive to the needs of the Kehilla (community) and Yochid (individual)."

The Vaad endorsed two incumbent Orthodox committeemen seeking re-election — Meir Lichtenstein and Menashe Miller.

"We have asked Meir and Menashe to implement a forceful program of change in the way town hall is run and operates," the letter stated. "This will include some significant personnel changes and restructuring, backed by a continued aggressive advocacy for the needs of each and every individual in Lakewood.

  1. Even the claim about a 'block vote' is twisted. It is portrayed as everyone needs to vote because elected officials look to keep voters happy. That part is true. The misleading part is claiming that we all must vote for whomever the Vaad says in order for the block vote to count. The only people helped by that are the Vaad members who come out looking all powerful.

  2. I have had a terrible personal experience with th elkaewood vaad in the past year with rabunim and roshei yeshivas they refuse to even engage or acknowledge rabunim or days torah at all

  3. "The vast majority no longer listens, cares about or trusts the vaad" While we may wish so, that is only wishful thinking. Maybe it is only for lack of knowledge but quite clearly most of lakewood votes as per the vaad. The only way to change things is by this message reaching the masses. Raise funding (gofundme?) and one month before next election print this out and distribute it in every shul. In today's lakewood you can probably even find some rabonim brave enough to sign on to please the daas torah people.

    1. No, the vaad acknowledge that they need to restructure and did nothing, and BTW look at the numbers a big part of Lakewood voted against the vaad
Those responsible for the abuse of the tzibbur עתידין ליתן את הדין
Every dollar will have ro be repayed

  5. Someone once complained to the rosh yeshiva about the vaad not representing the needs of the residents and only those of the yeshiva. He said zul Der shtut Machen a vaad

  6. The fact that the vaad admitted that they need to restructure and did absolutely nothing shows how they are disingenuous and had no intention of doing anything but only to deflect criticism.
The Lakewood rabbonim must all stand up together and demand a new vaad.

Enough of the bullying and lies that we saw last year by the tuition voucher scam

  7. The vaad abuse of the gullible lakewood tzibbur is a potemtialy a case of gneivas daas harabim
By fooling people that you have their best interests in mind and using their voting power for personal gain while not disclosing the benefits given to certain members

  8. Therer were choices this year and unfortunately they did not win. A new orginization represeting the oilam needs to be formed with recomendations on elections. It will cost $$ to ge the word out and to run it properly.

  9. of the 11 members of the Vaad mentioned above, 3 (Rabbis Rabinowitz, Rozansky and Shenkolewsky) are no longer alive. AK was kicked to the curb. Rav SB, Rabbi ML, Dr. JC, and AMM are no longer active in the Vaad at all. Even BH was not involved in this year's election. That leaves only one active member left in the Vaad - MZW. (I can't recall who the 11th member was). so it's no longer even a Vaad. It's just one guy.

  12. After all was said and done....More was said than done! The issue with the self appointed vaad has been duly noted. Now those individuals who have the capability and wherewithal should strengthen themselves and form a vaad that represents all the frum yidden living in Lakewood.

  13. Nothing will change unless the Roshei yeshiva give over control of the town
They believe that the town of Lakewood belongs to the Yeshiva and all resources should go to benefit the Yeshiva first and foremost.

The problem is that you have middlemen askanim who are helping themselves from the cookie jar using the Yeshiva as an excuse to enrich themselves. The town can take control and help the Yeshiva just as much with getting rid of those taking advantage of the klal for themselves

    1. The chasidim are undeterred and don't feel beholden to the R'Y of BMG. When they organize they will be a force (hopefully for improvement) to contend with. Stay tuned.

  14. Why are you complaining? Go to the Roshei Yeshiva and complain. As long as the Roshei Yeshiva allow the assumption that the Vaad represents them , you can't have any taynos to anybody except for the Roshei Yeshiva.

  17. What's the counter to the vaad?

If the counter to the vaad is a toeva-loving guy - he will always lose. He will be the cause of the vaad's strength, as people will simply vote against him or not vote.

If the counter to the vaad is someone who rants, rants and rants some more and then, rants some more while showing that he doesn't appreciate Torah-learners, then people will either sit it out or vote against him. He will be the cause of the vaad's strength.

It's time to put up a coalition of candidates who are truly blessed with good middos and who truly represent the Torah-values which bring people to the lakewood area.

Dear Hefkervelt, please don't delete my comment this time. Please publish it. Thank you.

    1. You missed the point but your cynical side and hatred of those who put themselves out there over the years for the klal has blinded you.
The alternative is a citywide vaad done according to shulchan aruch with a fair elections of all lakewood residents with representatives of all neighborhoods and demographics.
Not self appointed people who have been profiting off their positions abusing the Koach hatzibbur for themselves

    2. Even an expanded Vaad will be just expanded to net in younger grubbe who have bulging pockets or shtellers with slick
Who will they ever put up for the little guy? Unless they make a roman style tribune who is put in by the masses, stands there for the masses, & have the right to 'veto'
