Chasunas;

The Minhag Not To Recite Kiddush Friday Night During the 6th Hour

 There exists an intriguing minhag found primarily in Chassidic communities to avoid reciting kiddush between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.on or the 6th hour on Friday night (Magen Avrohom O.C. 271:1). This is based on kabbalistic considerations relating to the "mazalos", the different celestial influences, which are dominant in the world at various hours throughout the day and night. It is taught that during the last hour of the day on Friday, the positive mazal of "Tzedek" and its corresponding angel "Tzidkiyahu" are dominant in the world. Once Shabbos enters, however, the negative influences of "Madim" (often associated with the planet Mars), and its accompanying angel "Samael", then prevail. As such, in order to avoid contributing positive spiritual forces at a time which would benefit the power of Madim, we are advised to either recite kiddush while Tzedek still dominates or otherwise wait until the influence of Madim has passed.

A Change Of Policy on Attacking Presidents

 Another suspicious but more surprising statement by the Lakewood vaad at least this time it was signed.  No, not about Quality of life for Lakewood residents or anything pertaining to the town, or perhaps acknowledging their irrelevancy and lack of trust and support in the kehilla. Unlike a recent condescending letter attacking Lakewood residents who voted for Ciattarelli, this one shows a change of policy on attack sitting presidents who are friendly to the Jews.

 The statement from the vaad reminds the tzibbur not to criticize president Trump citing a strictly halachic and Torahdike perspective, "the Hakoras Hatov he deserves takes priority over our urges to sound off with disparaging political commentary". The statement ends by calling on all to "contribute to the Kiddush Hashem of appreciating and thanking our friends and not Chalila the opposite".

 It was the Vaad who attacked Trump in August 2017 in a publicized statement following the events in Charlottesville speaking out against Trump’s lack of reaction to the alt right protests. Lakewood residents and the frum world were outraged at the vaad for antagonizing a sitting US president. The Vaad never apologized.

Petition Launched To Stop The Lakewood DPW Solid Waste Transfer Station

 Stop the Lakewood DPW Solid Waste Transfer Station

 community is asked to help by signing petition

Map of "sensitive receptors" that could be effected within a mile of the proposed transfer station on the county website. None of this was posted on the Lakewood township website

Petition - Lakewood township has proposed to build a Solid Waste Transfer Station with a 300 ton daily capacity. The proposed site is immediately adjacent to the current DPW complex located on America ave. The solid waste transfer station is designed to offload waste from the local township garbage haulers. The local haulers unload directly onto the facility floor. Earth movers are then used to move and transfer the waste into semi trailers (18 wheelers) for transport to the Ocean County landfill.

The proposed solid waste transfer station will directly impact the quality of life of the residents and business establishments in its immediate vicinity. Proposed hours of operation are 7 days a week from 6AM to 9PM. During the hours of operation residents will hear loud equipment and see many more waste management vehicles including semi trailers coming and going. These facilities are known to cause tremendously foul smelling odors that will be a constant presence for all of the immediate area surrounding the facility. They also inherently generate large quantities of waste liquid. This is particularly concerning as the proposed site is within a half mile of the Lakewood MUA water tower as well as other fresh water bodies.

Located within a half mile of the proposed facility are established residential neighborhoods, eating establishments with indoor and outdoor seating, health facilities, newly built office parks, urgent care facilities and many schools with elementary school age children. These will all be directly negatively affected if this solid waste management facility is built.

JHS: Railroads & Jews

 Jsoundbites: Come on and Ride the Train: Railroads & Jews
The development of the railroad and the laying of rail track across the Russian Empire in the late 19th century, had a tremendous impact on traditional Jewish life in the Pale of Settlement. The railroad brought economic changes, implosion of communal structures and challenges to traditional norms. It enabled information to travel and for the spread of ideas, and for isolated shtetl’s to have access to wider society.
