(13 מהפיוט "אחות קטנה" מאת רב אברהם חזן מגירונדי, ספרד, במאה ה-)

הממליך מלכים ולו המלוכה

Coincidence? nothing is by chance but the fact that three powerful world leaders find themselves on the hot seat  a few days before Rosh Hashana.  The personal body guard to the king of Saudi Arabia was killed today. This shows the contrast between  melech בשר ודם who come and go and are appointed by the מלך מלכי המלכים who is eternal.

Minhagim for Erev Rosh Hashana 5780

תש"פ. תהא שנת פרנסה / פריון / פדות

-Some have a minhag to purchase a new knife on Erev Rosh hashana as a  segulah for parnassah.  החותך חיים לכל חי
-The minhag is for men to fast on erev Rosh Hashana up to chatzos (12:46 pm in Lakewood)
-Some go to visit kivrei tzadikim on erev Rosh Hashana.
-Minhag is to go to the mikva on erev yom tov.
-The bracha on candle lighting for Rosh Hashana is usually said lihadlik ner shol yom tov, without mention of Yom Hazikaron (some do say Yom Hazikaron)

The fire started at Greenwald Caterers on East Eighth Avenue Sunday around 8 p.m. Isaac Greenwald has owned the business for more than 20 years. He says that he has two other buildings and that the 20 employees from the Eighth Avenue location will be relocated. He says that all of his commitments will be fulfilled. “The show must go on. You can't call people and say, ‘There's no wedding. We’re out of business.’ You close down a wedding, you're done,” says Greenwald. No serious injuries were reported from the fire. Greenwald says that he will work with his insurance company as he moves forward. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

PR Stunt or Empty Threat

Well the LSTA is reportedly going to cease operating transportation tomorrow because it does not have funding to operate.
Legally they are required to provide transportation to all mandated students. If there are no funds the BOE should declare bankruptcy. Agudah of NJ should go to court with it's team of lawyers for  the children of Lakewood
get an injunction to stop this continued insanity.
The LSTA recently got extra funding from lakewood township for public school courtesy busing. The townships first said they have no money and raised taxes significantly. Somehow there was a surplus and they allocated 2 million for the LSTA.
The LSTA also received a $1.5 million dollar loan from the LDC in August.
To suddenly issue a threat to cancel busing is suspicious and perhaps there's another motive for a savior to come by.

PR: Lakewood fights anti-Semitic image to become model for neighbors

Article via Lakewood Neighbors posted on Religion News Service
"Lakewood’s squabbles may never have come to a head had not the internet come along. “The zoning battles we see today aren’t new,” said Kotler. “With social media and the quick spread of news, we hear about it more widely.”
"Animosity toward Lakewood’s Jewish population began to manifest itself as far back as the 1980s, when plans to build the Zichron Schneur Synagogue met with a zoning challenge from its neighbors",
"continued cross-border mediation efforts that include Lakewood’s surrounding towns will help demystify the Orthodox Jewish community from its neighbors and even help form lasting bonds.
On the heels of the social media attention came a barrage of negative news coverage, which drowned out the stories the town’s leaders wanted to tell about Lakewood’s growth and prosperity.
LAKEWOOD, N.J. (RNS) — Like any rapidly expanding exurb, this town of 103,000 residents 1 1/2 hours south of Manhattan along the Jersey Shore has received its influx of outsiders with trepidation about the changing nature of their home turf. One thing that makes Lakewood different is that nearly half the town’s population boom over the past three decades is primarily the result of the arrival of Orthodox Jews, who have nearly doubled the town’s rolls just since 2000.

As Case against Jackson Proceeds, Agudah Asks Court to Suspend Controversial Laws

Hamodia  By Mordechai Wincorn LAKEWOOD -
Attorneys are asking a federal judge to suspend Jackson Township’s ordinances banning eruvin and the construction of new schools and dormitories while litigation claiming they are discriminatory is pending in the courts. The filing contains a swath of new evidence linking township officials and the enactment of the controversial laws to a campaign designed to deter Orthodox Jews from moving to Jackson.

While the case has been ongoing since 2017, Agudath Israel of America and a private developer, who are both plaintiffs, had been engaged in arbitration for close to a year. Attorney Roman Storzer told Hamodia that once negotiations broke down, it became necessary to press for a “preliminary injunction.”

DAYAINU We've Reached the End of The Line

! דיינו
Not as a parent and not as a person who has any blood or money in the issue, but the time has come to end this horrible situation. Ateres Tzipora 2 months ago closed its doors, as no viable solution has been found. Askanim, Rosh Yeshivas, Rabanim, and concerned individuals, have tried different options to find a way to save the day, by creating a new school, but it hasn't worked out. We have reached overtime and beyond.

The school year is in full swing and a hundred girls have no school to call their own. It is time for true leaders to say we have reached the end of the line. It is time for leadership to say DAYAINU! I believe that today, don't push until tomorrow, is the time to call a meeting of all the people who have taken upon themselves chinuch for the sake of HASHEM, to sit down and place every girl in a school today. (V'im loi achshav, aimasai).

Parents are setting up temporary homeschools but that is not either a viable option for many reasons. These kids need stability and friends.  Now is not the time for wishful thinking it's time to face reality and place these neshamos in existing schools.

BOE issues Raised During Press Conference about Fire

The media was in Lakewood at a press conference attended  by school district officials about helping the families and children displaced or left homeless by the fire early Friday morning.  Representative of the Latino community took to the media to complain and accuse that the community has not helped despite promising to do so and that the Red cross has not either helped (they were there Friday morning). She said there are still some families that are homeless with little babies and no where to go. They ranted to the media about not the previous boe meetings that they were not given a chance to speak.

A Reporter for NJ news 12 asked why the requirement to show  photo ID when entering BOE school board meetings  meeting  and said they do not judge the immigration  status and this requirement is due to threats.  District officials mentioned the cancellation of the last meeting because of a suspicious object that turned out to be a empty suitcase but the reporter asked if the ID requirement was made prior to that incident to which the officials responded as yes.
Reporter asked if the ACLU is checking in on the ID requirement officials say they do not know.

New school Bais Yaakov of Ocean County to open after Ateres Ziporah was closed

A new girls elementary  school by the name Bais Yaakov of Ocean County will open in Lakewood  servicing the greater Lakewood area grades primary thru 8th. The school is in place of the Ateres Ziporah school that was shut down. The school is expected to take over the children from Ateres Tziporah and others.

Due to the amazing growth which we are privileged to witness in Lakewood and the surrounding area,  there is a strong need for additional schools to service the community. In light of this, and with great siyata dishmaya, a group of dedicated askanim and baalei batim have joined forces to address this need. With much anticipation and excitement, we are pleased to announce the opening of Bais Yaakov of Ocean County, a new elementary school for girls from Primary through 8th grade. The school will be housed in a beautiful building on Prospect Street and aims to provide its students with a chinuch par excellence.

Rabbi Hershy Rosenbaum of New York has graciously agreed to accept a role of leadership and is well positioned to lead Bais Yaakov of Ocean County to success. Rabbi Rosenbaum is the former executive director of Yeshivas Chasan Sofer of Boro Park and comes with many years of experience in the field of Chinuch. In addition, he has given several mosdos invaluable direction and assistance in times of need, helping to turn them into successful institutions.

Girls Schools Open, Not everyone Placed

Girls schools in Lakewood started today yet there are still over 100 girls sitting at home with no school to go to. Previously the schools in Lakewood were told not to open until every girl is placed, this year no such order was given. There are a number of high school age girls still waiting to be accepted. Ateres Ziporah elementary students are still waiting in the wings with no firm commitment as to their future. Vague statements were made about a solution but parents have not been informed of anything concrete. There was some talk of reopening the school although the previous location has already been rented out to a boys school.
Some are still trying to place their children in the existing schools while others are commuting to  schools out of Lakewood.

12 Hours before start, Parents still trying to get Daughters into School

Girls schools are starting tomorrow but for many girls they still have no where to go. Parents who's children are still not in school literally banged on the doors of school principals today begging to accept their children.
Parents were told to hold tight while individuals work on placing all girls from Ateres Tziporah into existing schools and that siblings will be kept together. With 12 hours left they are hoping for the best.

Article: America's Orthodox Jews Selling Products on Amazon

Buzfeed article profiles orthodox Jewish sellers on Amazon

Yisroel (who lives in Lakewood) missed a lot — blogging, Napster, Wikipedia, Facebook, Twitter. Like many other Orthodox Jewish men, most of his education was spent studying the Torah and Talmudic law.
“I never went to business school or college — I barely finished high school,” the 46-year-old told BuzzFeed News. “I didn’t know how to turn on a computer until I was 35.”

Which makes him an unlikely founder of an Amazon business making $5 million annually.

Yisroel — who asked to be identified by his Hebrew name for reasons of privacy — is a deeply observant Orthodox Jew, one of the many who have turned to third-party sales on Amazon. The company’s third-party sellers make up 58% of all sales on the site. But there’s an estimate passed around third-party Amazon consultants that claims 7% of all Amazon third-party sales originate from a single zip code in Brooklyn, and that Orthodox Jewish–owned businesses make up 15% of marketplace sellers. Amazon declined to comment on both numbers. But sources told BuzzFeed News the company is well aware of this particular community, and Amazon seemed to nod to that in a statement to BuzzFeed News. “Brooklyn is home to many impressive independent retailers selling on Amazon,” it said.

About six years ago, Yisroel started his business from the dining room table of his home in Lakewood, which he has called home for more than 20 years. Here, visitors will find street signs in Yiddish, modestly dressed women in wigs gathered at cafés with small children on their laps and in strollers, Jewish restaurants lining the town’s small downtown strip, and even a kosher Chinese takeout spot.
