To learn the simple meaning of Selichos you can use Artscroll but it would be nice if the Roshei Yeshiva gave an in depth shiur on Selichos and piyutim .EG Rashi in Sefer Ezra explaining the word רשיון (a government permit) ends by saying say that ארשת שפתינו (said on Rosh Hashana) is grammatically incorrect. When even the Rishonim argue these issues it would be nice to hear a shiur from the Roshei Yeshiva explaining them. People would also appreciate them more if they understood the tremendous depth behind each word. And then music would seem out of place...
Anon 10:41 I asume that they do that in Yotzei Ashkenaz minyan on Forest Ave. Find out if it will be done in the new Tolna Beis Medrash on Albert based on the minhag of the Rav's great grandfather as it is also the minhag of Yeshiva Toras Moshe in Yerushalaim.
Yotzei Ashkenaz have other slichot. Check their Israeli website.
And the Rav was known for being an expert in kinnot yotzrot and zmirot he used to quote them from memory when they had halachic significance, which they sometimes do (and I don't just mean the long one at end of Shabbat haGadol. Rav Moshe also would quote from that one, including in IM.)
10:04 AM I looked up that Rashi after you mentioned it. Rashi does not say that ארשת שפתינו is grammatically incorrect in the sense it should be written differently. He disagrees with the mechaber (Menachem) who connects the word ארשת to רשיון when Rashi held the words were unrelated. According to Menachem רשיון does not only mean permission but rather an expression that articulates ones will (that allowed the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash in that case) According to Rashi רשיון is limited to giving permission.
This is not the Lakewood derech.
ReplyDeleteWe just have boring slichot, no music.
Next time, you'll have musica Hallel
Its changing faster than you think
DeleteJust enjoy the music no one is asking to change derech
DeleteMaybe the Roshei Yeshiva can address the issue by taking some time to teach about the meaning of the Slichos, which are nor understood by most
DeleteInstead of the shuls publishing a list of selichos to skip. Rather say them with music.
Deleteab -- music with guitar and organ.

ReplyDeleteDo any shuls in town say all the Selichos on Yom Kippur (not just in maariv and neila but in the other tefillos as well)?
DeleteRYs don't know dikduk, you can leave it just as well by yourself.
DeleteMore important is historical context, which RYs oppose studying.
