While Lakewood residents are facing a significant property tax increase, the township is also set to receive approximately $28 million from the sale of airport property to CHEMED for its planned medical village. While residents wonder why those proceeds can't be used to offset the township's budget deficit and reduce the tax burden. According to a Lakewood official, as reported by The Voice of Lakewood, because the property belonged to the airport and was acquired with federal aviation funding, federal regulations require that the proceeds remain dedicated to airport purposes. The money must be used within the airport system, such as replacing runways, improving infrastructure, or constructing airport-related facilities, rather than being deposited into the township's general fund.
