The Rov who wouldn't comply with shul policy to disconnect cellphones Arousing Divine assistance when purchasing a lottery ticket Reaching out to one who partially abandoned yiddishkeit due to loneliness Rav Solomon demonstrated how every Mashgiach must execute his role When to deviate from the noble tradition of baking Challah When, how, and who may point out deficiencies of Gedolai Yisroel Reversing the perpetual trend of declining generations

  1. Regarding The first answer. Obviously it’s not for a sick mother as a Hatzolah person, because he doesn’t stop Davening and answer phone.

  2. I was around 40 years ago and I don't remember Yshiva Bochurim having been so different in some of the areas Rabbi Ribner mentions. I'll also say that back then wearing colored shirts and not wearing hats and jackets in the streets in the summer was a lot more acceptable . Even in some of the most Yeshivish shtark places. Another difference was that even the most Yeshivish Yeshivas gave a very good secular education in their mesivtas.

    1. Agree. Though naturally "Very good" is very relative-when your base level is as it is now bottom, everything better is very good

    2. There was a divide in those days between those who went to EY and beyond to Lakewood
      vs those who didn't
(except perhaps a brief sniff of the air there)

RGR presumably referring for those of the former category.Whereas there were all types of guys as 5:34 stated of all flavors of the latter category

  3. This isn’t oonly about Yeshiva Bochurim but about the Yeshivish world in general. Forty –Fifty years it valued and stressed Emes and Erlichkeit a lot more than it does today. Back then Tzeire Aguds Yisroel used to make Isru Chag asifas for chizuk for Bochurim. I remember one where Rav Yaakov and Rav Mendel Kaplan were the speakers. The exclusive topic of the asifa was the middah of Emes. I can’t picture such an asifa taking place today. Or some of the things said at that asifa being said today.

    1. Correct. Today's asifas are all about bans.
