בד"ה HaRav Nota Greenblatt ZTL

Levaya will be held Sunday 2:00 pm at Mesivta Tiferes Yerushalayim MTJ in New York City

Matzav- It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rav Nota Greenblatt zt”l, av bais din of Memphis, TN and noted rov and posek. He was 96 years old.

Rav Greenblatt was born in 1925 in Washington, DC. In 1928, his parents moved to Ellenville, NY, where his father, Rav Yitzchok, a native of Brisk, became the rov of the shul. Rav Yitzchok then became a shul rov in Newark, which had a large Jewish community. Rav Yitzchok was not only a talmid chochom who wrote seforim, but was also a maggid, traveling around and speaking. In 1943, Rav Yitzchok started the first day school in Newark, which was the second religious day school to open in New Jersey.

Rav Nota Greenblatt was born in Washington, but spent the years age 8 to age 12 in Israel. He returned to the US by himself at the age of 12 in 1937 to study under Rav Dovid Leibowitz at Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim on South 9th Street in Williamsburg. The mashgiach of the yeshiva was Rav Chaim Pinchos Scheinberg. Rav Greenblatt learned with bochurim who were much older than him and was able to hold his own due to his in-depth, Yerushalmi chinuch. He spoke a fluent Yiddish, which helped him become close to Rav Dovid. Rav Dovid told him, “If you’re sincere and you know where you want to go in life and have a plan, you’ll never fail. You will always succeed.”

The uplifting tale depicted in this video is a true story. It took place right before Pesach in 1945. It portrays the devotion and wisdom of two great Rebbes in the aftermath of the destruction of European Jewry during the Holocaust. It also serves as a microcosm of the role great and saintly leaders play in enriching our lives and guiding us in every generation.

Suspect in Lakewood Terror Attack said "pretty Sure victim had Died"

APP reports on court appearance today for Lakewood  terror suspect..see video on NJ 12

At a profanity-laden court appearance Wednesday, the Manchester man accused in last week’s violent but non-lethal crime spree in Lakewood and Jackson told a judge he was "pretty sure'' one of the victims had died. App reports.

As the judge was reading the attempted murder and bias intimidation charges against him Marsh interrupted and said, “I’m pretty sure he did die, sir. I’m pretty sure he did die.’’

CRC Kashrus Alert Re: Romaine Lettuce

April 11, 2022

Sew video below how to check Romaine Lettuce

cRc- In recent weeks, we have noticed an unusually high level of infestation in different types of produce, and this specifically affects the preparation of romaine lettuce for the Seder. In our efforts to help consumers find reliable insect-free romaine lettuce this Pesach season, we have done extensive testing and research. Based on our testing, the following are the cRc’s recommendations in descending order of preference:

1. Purchase romaine lettuce certified kosher by a reliable hechsher. (Please note that “triple washed lettuce” without a reliable hechsher has been proven many times over to be infested.)

2. Use only the stalks (i.e., not the leafy parts) after rubbing each stalk with a soapy sponge followed by a rinse with fresh water.

3. The following is for non-organic romaine hearts  (not romaine heads which are too infested at this time even with this method): Separate the leaves from the heart, put them in a bowl of soapy water and agitate for a full minute. Remove leaves from soapy water and gently rub all areas of each side with a sponge. This includes flattening the curled-up edges so they can be scrubbed. Then rinse each leaf under running water while rubbing the leaves with your fingers. Start again, by putting the leaves back into a fresh bowl of soapy water and agitate the leaves. Then rinse each leaf (front and back) under running water while running your fingers across the entire leaf to undo the folds. To see a video of this method, please click here . [The “alternate method” listed on the cRc website is not effective for lettuce infested to this degree and should not be used at this time.]

4. The “thrip cloth method” listed on our website.  This method is only suitable for those who are trained and experienced.

Suspect Promised "Blood bath" in Antisemitic Attack Targeting Lakewood

New details about the Lakewood/Jackson terror  attack according to police documents obtained by NJ Advance Media

- told family, “it’s going to be a blood bath” and called Jews “the real devils,”

-Marsh said he was outside a Lakewood church around 1 p.m. Friday and looking for a ride home when he tried to get in “multiple vehicles,” according to the document. He carjacked the Toyota driver and went home

- Concerned citizen contacted a Lakewood police officer to say they recognized the suspect from security video of the carjacking,

NJ- The man accused of a multi-hour antisemitic crime spree in Ocean County allegedly told family, “it’s going to be a blood bath” and called Jews “the real devils,” according to police documents obtained by NJ Advance Media.

Authorities charged 27-year-old Dion Marsh with multiple offenses, including attempted murder and bias intimidation for the Friday violence that included stabbing an Orthodox Jewish man in the chest, a carjacking and hitting pedestrians with a car Lakewood and Jackson, officials said.

Documents publicized released Tuesday detailed how Ocean County investigators said they tracked Marsh, of Manchester, and how an alert good Samaritan’s tip to a Lakewood police officer helped detectives identify the accused assailant the same day of the attacks.

The first crime occurred shortly after 1 p.m. near Dr. Martin Luther King Drive and Pine Street, where the attacker forced a motorist out of his vehicle and assaulted the driver before fleeing in the Toyota Camry, according to authorities. Lakewood detectives also gathered video surveillance showing the suspect trying to carjack two other vehicles, court documents show.

Shortly after 6 p.m., a person was hit by a vehicle near Carlton and Central avenues in Lakewood, authorities said. Also around the same time, police received a call from a father who said someone tried to pull his son into a vehicle. Prosecutors have not charged Marsh in that case.

The violence continued when Marsh allegedly stabbed a man in the chest near Pine Circle Drive and Lakewood-New Egypt Road and fled just before 7 p.m., according to authorities.

Around 8:20 p.m., another pedestrian was run down in Jackson and police discovered the same Toyota carjacked earlier in Lakewood was used in the attack, court documents stated.

A break in the fast-moving investigation came when an anonymous, concerned citizen contacted a Lakewood police officer to say they recognized the suspect from security video of the carjacking, a township police detective wrote in court papers.

A family member of Marsh also told detectives that the accused attacker had recently broken up with his girlfriend and said, “it’s going to be a blood bath,” according to the document.

Detectives with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office then obtained a warrant to track Marsh’s cell phone, an investigator wrote.

When Manchester police arrived at Marsh’s residence, they found him lying on a bed holding “what appeared to be a machete on his chest,” around 10:45 p.m. Friday night, according to the document. They arrested him a short time later.

Marsh’s hate-filled comments came during a recorded interview with detectives, according to the documents. During the interview, he admitted to the carjacking, stabbing and hitting pedestrians, the detective wrote.

“Dion Marsh advised when asked why he did all the acts he committed, he stated ‘it had to be done’ that ‘these are the real devils,” and when asked to whom he was referring, “’the Hasidic Jews,’” the detective’s account said.

Lakewood is home to a majority Orthodox Jewish community, as well as a smaller Hasidic, or Hasidim, community.

Marsh said he was outside a Lakewood church around 1 p.m. Friday and looking for a ride home when he tried to get in “multiple vehicles,” according to the document. He carjacked the Toyota driver and went home.

“Marsh then admitted that he used his grandmother’s vehicle, a maroon Honda…and traveled back to the [Lakewood-area],” the detective wrote.

Elected officials, Orthodox Jewish community leaders, the Anti-Defamation League and other officials have condemned the attacks.

Increased Law Enforcement Patrols are in Effect After the Attacks

 - Ocean County Jewish Community Shaken After 3 Men Attacked

Increased law enforcement patrols are in effect after the attacks that hospitalized 3 Orthodox Jewish men on Friday night.

Karen Wall, for Patch

LAKEWOOD, NJ — In the wake of attacks Friday night that left three Orthodox Jewish men hospitalized, law enforcement is increasing patrols throughout Lakewood and in neighboring towns to try to quell the fears sparked by the spree.

One man was stabbed and two others were hit by a car in separate incidents that started with a carjacking Friday afternoon, authorities have said. Dion Marsh, 27, of Manchester, has been charged with three counts of attempted murder and three counts of bias intimidation in the attacks, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and Lakewood Police said in a joint news release.

Investigators have determined that Marsh was acting alone, the prosecutor's office said.

NYT Article on High Covid Death Rate in Ocean county, Blames Low Vaccination Rate in Lakewood

Again the New York Times publishes an article on why Ocean county, NJ has the highest covid death rate. It includes the low vaccination rate in Lakewood and the many Trump supporters in Ocean county as part of the reason. This article is an improvment from the first one but still shifts blame.

The simple reason is that Ocean county has the fourth-highest percentage of residents older than 85 in the United States, which is mentioned later in the article. No mention that Five townships in Ocean county with much smaller populations than Lakewood have higher covid death rates. As of  this week the death numbers are:  Manchester 454, Berkley 369, Brick 357 Toms River 429, Lakewood 377, Jackson 142.

Most of the deaths happened in the first year of covid before the vaccines were even available. Many Lakewood deaths were from seniors in nursing home facilities and from the non Jewish population. In the initial wave the frum Jewish deaths from covid were between 80 - 100. Also not factored in the high vaccination rate among the 65+ population, 92% are vaccinated. 20% of the population are under 5 years old and over 50% of Lakewood's population are younger than 18 years old, as a reason for the low vaccination rate. Natural immunity is also ignored

The Yated Ne'eman Lakewood  section pointed out that the high numbers reported by the county was based on the 2010 census count which pushed  up the average. If you factor in the 2020 census the numbers go down on average with the population increase.

Why This Coastal County Has the Highest Covid Death Rate in Its State

Ocean County, a predominantly white and middle-class community in central New Jersey, also has low vaccination rates.

A string of crimes took place on erev  shabbos and continued Friday night all connected to one individual  who terrorized the Lakewood and Jackson orthodox  communities. 4 people all orthodox Jews were hospitalized as a result of the  crimes which included a stabbing and 2 who were run over by the car. Two remain in critical condition  The suspect has been arrested and charged. The ADL said the suspect is  “said to have made antisemitic remarks upon arrest,”.

Please daven for Moshe Yigal ben Bruriah, one of the victims who needs a refuah sheleimah.

It started  with a carjacking on erev shabbos at Pine and MLK at 1:15 pm after an attempted  car Jacking  20 minutes  earlier  on Arlington  Ave when the suspect beat a younger man and stole his car. 5 hours later he drove back into Lakewood with the stolen car a camry and went  on a crime spree stabbing and running  people over in the area of Central  Ave and Pine circle and Carlton. He also tried to abduct a bachur. He then went into Jackson and attempted to run people over on Galassi court who were on the way back from davening sending a victim to the hospital  with broken bones. Police reportedly  tracked him down in Manchester  after his car tires were flat and he asked someone to help him report's said that he put on Jacket that was was found in the car. Askanim set up a command center Friday night to monitor  the situation as it was unfolding. Messages were sent out for people to only walk in groups and not be alone until it was safe to do  so. Several rabbonim spoke about it on shabbos to give chiizuk as one of the victims run over is a rebbe in the kehila and a yeshiva bachur was run over and then stabbed.

Updated time line submitted

At that point they realized that being that he refused help initially it must be he's not a Jew so they ignored him and he ran away after a few minutes A police car randomly passed and noticed the disabled car on the side of the road with the door open and the lights on so they got out of the car to look what was going on at that point the homeowner came out and told the police officer what had transpired at that point the police put the two and two together and they called in for backup.  NJ.com- Ocean County man faces attempted murder and other charges after detectives say he carjacked a vehicle, struck two pedestrians with it and stabbed a man in the chest, authorities said Saturday.

Dion Marsh, 27, of Manchester Township, is charged with three counts of attempted murder, weapons possession and three counts of bias intimidation for a series of violent crimes that occurred Friday afternoon in Lakewood, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

Billhimer said the suspect approached a 2016 Toyota Camry about 1:15 p.m. in the area of Martin Luther King Drive and Pine Street, assaulted the driver and fled in his vehicle.

About 6 p.m., a pedestrian was struck in the area of Central Avenue and Carlton Avenue and less than an hour later a man was stabbed near Pine Circle Drive and Lakewood New Egypt Road, Billhimer said.

The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, while the stabbing victim was hospitalized in critical but stable condition, the prosecutor said.

About 8:20 p.m., the same carjacked Camry struck a pedestrian in the area of Galassi Court in Jackson Township, Billhimer said. The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical but stable condition, Billhimer said.

Marsh was later arrested at his home in Manchester Township and held in the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing, according to Billhimer.

“Our investigation reveals that these criminal acts were committed throughout the day yesterday into the early evening and that Marsh was acting alone and not in concert with anyone else,” Billhimer said in a statement.

Billhimer said the case was investigated by prosecutor’s office, local police and state police, along with agents from the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, and the New Jersey Department of Homeland Security and Preparedness.

Gov. Phil Murphy issued a statement in response to the crime spree on Saturday.

“I applaud the efforts of law enforcement in Lakewood and Ocean County for swiftly apprehending the individual believed to have committed a series of serious criminal acts last night, including multiple violent offenses. Tammy and I pray for the full recovery of all victims. The safety of our communities, and notably our communities of faith, is not only a paramount concern but among my highest priorities. We will continue to partner with all who share this commitment so no resident ever needs to live in fear,” the governor said.

Rabbi & Educator: Rav Avigdor Miller Part II

Jsoundbites    Rav Avigdor Miller assumed the rabbinate of Walnut Street Shul in Chelsea, Massachusetts in 1939, and would remain there for six years. Seeking better educational opportunity for his children, he moved to East Flatbush, Brooklyn in 1945 and would remain there for the next three decades. He assumed a position as mashgiach in Yeshiva Chaim Berlin in Brownsville, and began educating his young charges with the values he had brought from Slabodka. At around the same time he was hired as congregational rabbi at the Young Israel of Rugby, where he would have a decisive impact on generations of congregants.

Today: Lakewood Township Committee Meeting

Update: The Mayor said at the Township meeting  that they decided not to vote on the Cedarbridge amendment ordnance to give 35 year tax abatement since the planning  board voted against it. Several residents sent in letters opposing it urging the township to vote no. One letter mentioned the NJ Attorney  General who recently called on Lakewood  to raise taxes how can the committee handout more tax abatements? The mayor tried to deflect it and said the AG was referring  to the BOE to raise taxes meaning the township has no responsibility to the BOE budget. Others called it Neposisim and the mayor mocked it. The motion died due to lack of a vote.

The Lakewood township committee meeting will take place today 5:30 pm virtually. The township has yet to resume in person meetings while other boards have already done so.
