CDC Walks Back Director’s Comments on COVID Vaccines for Pregnant Women

Yahoo News  - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention walked back a statement by the agency’s director regarding coronavirus vaccines for pregnant women.

CDC head Dr. Rochelle Walensky said at a White House press conference on Friday that the “CDC recommends that pregnant people receive the COVID-19 vaccine.” Walensky cited a new preliminary report from the agency, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, that indicates that there is no evidence Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccines pose a risk during pregnancy.

However, the CDC said on Tuesday that its guidelines for pregnant women who wish to receive a coronavirus vaccine have not changed since they were initially released in March. Those guidelines state that “if you are pregnant, you may choose to receive a COVID-19 vaccine” but caution pregnant women to weigh the risks posed by vaccination and the virus against one another. The guidelines do not explicitly “recommend” that pregnant women get vaccinated, as Walensky suggested Friday.

Great American Jewish Cities Toronto Part II

 Jewish History Soundbites

Jewish Toronto in the post war saw a development of the community in its leadership and institutions. Rav Dovid Ochs replaced Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky at the helm of the Toras Emes community, and Chabad began to have a presence in town as well. A rising rabbinic leader at this time was Rav Gedalya Felder, while at the same time there started to arrive a large influx of Holocaust survivors, with Rav Meir Grunwald, the Teitcher Rov as a leader in the community as well.

Why We Read The Haftorah of Achrei Mos and not Kedoshim

Ohr.edu Rabbi Yehuda Spitz
This Shabbos, something atypical will occur during davening. When it comes time for the haftarah, chances are that the actual reading will not be the previously scheduled haftarah listed in your Chumash, that of Kedoshim, but rather the haftarah listed for the previous parshah, Acharei Mos. In fact, as the reading commenced in the shul where I was davening last year, so did a concurrent dispute with the gabbai, with mispalleleim arguing that the Ba’al Koreh was reading the wrong haftarah! But, to properly understand why the ‘wrong haftarah’ was, it turns out, quite properly read, some background is needed.

Haftarah History
According to the Abudraham and Tosafos Yom Tov, the haftaros were established when the wicked

Live shiur 10:30 p.m. -Rav Reuven Schwartz- Pesach Sheini on the last day of Bahab 646-726-9977

When בה''ב Falls out on Pesach Sheini

This calendar year when Erev Pesach is on shabbos will also have the rare occurrence the second Monday of selichos  behab fall out on Pesach Sheini 14th day of Iyar. Since many have the minhag not to say tachnun on the day of pesach sheini the poskim discuss what to do about those who fast on behab as well as saying selichos.  Rabonei yerushalayim would not fast or say selichos and avinu malkeinu. some recite and abridged version of selichos while others say all of it (Luach Eretz Yisroel). The siddur yaavetz says that it is permitted to fast and you say selichos. The chazon Ish would say tachnun and למנצח on pesach sheini since it is not brought down in the shulchan aruch among the days that you do not recite tachnun and according to him selichos behab is said too.

In Lakewood, the minhag hayeshiva is to say the selichos but to stop after "הרחמים והסליחות" which is after the viduy (just as would be done if there is a bris). Tachnun and avinu malkeinu are not said. However on mincha erev pesach sheini  minhag  hayeshiva in Lakewood is to say tachnun  since the simcha on pesach Sheni was only during the time that the Korban was brought and not all day or the night before which than you wont say tachnun at the mincha that predeeds it (Noheg Bachachma)

Lakewood officials Concerned not Enough People vaccinating

Watch here minute 26:44 or below

Responding to a question why t he town hall in Lakewood is still closed the mayor said that it is due to safety concerns for the police officers who work in the building by not having members of the public there. There was a meeting yesterday at CHEMED with the Lakewood mayor, officials had concerns that there is less of a push for people  in town to vaccinate "we have to encourage them to get the shot the more people who are vaccinated the safer we will all be the more people who do not get vaccinated is more an opportunity for this virus to pass a  mutant .. different variant that may not work with the vaccine that was given out. It is all in our interest. We have to ask as many people as we know to put aside the concerns they have  and get vaccinated as soon as possible.

An ad in the Vivaser daily today quoted all 4 of the Lakewood yeshiva poskim who said not to take the shot yet since it is a new vaccine there may be long term effects that are not yet known and therefore shev veeal taaseh adif.

Traffic Costing People Parnassa

Does anyone on  the township government care about the little guy?

Once again Lakewood residents sat in rush hour traffic on Cedarbridge Avenue  due to construction of the utility companies installing electric lines for the new shopping development. It resulted in hundreds of people who were forced to show up late to work and losing their pay specifically hourly workers. Rebbeim and children came late to school. Everytime this happens officials say they will not allow construction to take place during the busy morning commute but it turns out to be words only. Just yesterday after sitting for an hour they said it wont happen and then traffic resumed again today. There is no excuse for the township committee members to be out of touch and not take any action to help the residents who rely on paycheck to paycheck and let them suffer while development goes on.

Toms River- complaints About Contents in Free Meal Boxes

Patch- Toms River, NJ:  Amid complaints from parents about the items included in free meals that are being sent home with students, the Toms River Regional School District sent home a letter Monday to clarify a recent change to the program.  The school district  like many around the state — is providing free meals to students during the coronavirus pandemic with federal funding granted for that purpose. The goal has been to ensure that all students are getting fed, especially those from low-income families and families who suffered job losses as a result of the pandemic. Before Spring Break, the district announced a change in the program, shifting from sending home food daily to sending a box with six meals per student — three breakfasts, three lunches — twice a week. But the contents of those meals drew complaints ranging from them being inadequate to items kids wouldn't eat, going so far to call it "garbage". Some of the items included granola bars, beef jerky and snack crackers.

Lang Lawsuit: If BOE, State Prevail Formula Will Not be Fixed

The Lakewood BOE and the state of NJ attorney general Gurbir Grewal both responded to the ruling in the Lang Lawsuit and said that in fact Lakewood did provide a Thorough and Efficient education to its public school students and asked that the judge reopen the case so they can show the facts and that the Commissioner should rule that Lakewood has provided T&E to its public school students.

The initial ruling was that the Lakewood school district did not provide a T&E education but that the Funding formula was not to blame rather Lakewood taxpayers caused the educational deficiencies. Lang said the only way to win this case is to show that because of the lack of funding there is no T&E and the judge's favorable decision on T & E  is the legal basis for fixing the formula. Lakewood taxpayers will soon owe the state $200 million in loans including a request for $70 million loan for this year's budget.

"We were in an excellent position winning the most important issue".

Lang tweeted "If BOE prevails the formula will not be fixed, the state will figure out a way to make us pay the loans and education will not improve. I was confident we'd be out of the Office of Administrative Law and into the Appellate DIvision by summer. We were in an excellent position winning the most important issue. The BOE just asked for a remand to overturn our win, agreeing with the state.

Trump: Biden Admin Terrible Disservice to Pause Vaccine

Former President Donald Trump today slammed the Biden administration’s sudden recommendation that states and companies pause distribution of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine after reports of a rare blood clotting issue.

“The Biden administration did a terrible disservice to people throughout the world by allowing the FDA and the CDC to call a ‘pause’ in the use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine,” Trump wrote in a statement from his Save America PAC, suggesting politics at play, including a biased support for the Pfizer vaccine by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. “The results of this vaccine have been extraordinary but now its reputation will be permanently challenged. The people who have already taken the vaccine will be up in arms, and perhaps all of this was done for politics or perhaps it’s the FDA’s love for Pfizer.”

Trump’s statement pointed back to the political play of Pfizer and the FDA in withholding official approval of the vaccine until after President Joe Biden declared victory in the 2020 presidential election.
