Statement From Agudath Israel

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s tweets last night about a large funeral that took place in Williamsburg, Brooklyn created a maelstrom of protest. They gave the impression that he saw the Jewish community, in particular, as flouting rules of social distancing in this challenging time.

The mayor expressed regret this morning for the way his words were taken. We agree with that sentiment. No matter how well-intentioned the Mayor might be, words that could be seized upon by bigots and anti-Semites must be avoided at all costs.

The tweet drew outrage from political leaders calling it anti semetic. Senator Ted Cruz tweeted  would the Mayor have singled out any other ethnic community in his Tweet other than the Jewish community?.

Updated Halachic Guidelines for Playgroup Tuition

Part 2 from the Lakewood Botei Din.  Part 1 here

This document (Below) serves as a continuation to Part 1 which was published in March.
We would like to reiterate that these are only general guidelines. Each specific case may have additional factors that impact the halacha which are not addressed in these guidelines. As with all monetary issues between two parties, the parties have a right to obtain a ruling from an agreed upon authority that has heard the specific details of their case. These guidelines serve to assist those wishing to mutually settle the matter on their own without having their case adjudicated in a formal din torah.
While the guidelines below represent the halachic rights and obligations of the parties, we must be sensitive to the devastating financial consequences that many people are experiencing during these times. Klal Yisroel has always leaned upon their trait of rachmonus and gemilus chessed to carry us
through our darkest moments, and one is encouraged to see if they have the place in their hearts to go above the letter of the law even when not strictly required to do so. As mentioned in Part 1, if a morah is relying on these funds for their daily expenditures and a parent has the financial ability to continue paying the full tuition, or any amount more than the recommended p’shara, this would be highly commendable and can be paid from ma’aser funds.

Appeal Filed Against NJ Assisted Suicide Law

A lawsuit was filed Against the state of  NJ  to stop the assisted suicide bill. The law was put on hold by a  superior court’s temporary restraining order that  suspended the state’s new medical aid-in-dying law. It was in response to a lawsuit, Glassman v. Grewal, filed against the New Jersey attorney general by an Orthodox Jewish physician, Yosef Glassman, who says he opposes the law because of his religious beliefs. In August of 2019 a New Jersey appellate court overturned the superior court’s temporary restraining order that had suspended the state’s new medical aid-in-dying law. The appellate court ruling reinstated the law, which originally took effect on Aug. 1. Now, terminally ill state residents will be able to use it to "peacefully end their suffering".

The appellate court did not rule on the merits of the lawsuit, which will continue to be litigated in superior court. On April 1, 2020 A Superior Court judge has dismissed the lawsuit seeking to overturn the state’s 2019 medical aid-in-dying law, holding that a doctor and two others named as plaintiffs had neither legal standing nor the constitutional right to interfere with a terminally ill person’s choice to end his or her life. Mercer County Superior Court Judge Robert Lougy granted a motion by state Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal to dismiss the complaint in Glassman v. Grewal, which sought to overturn the controversial law.

Last week activists obtained attorney Margret Dore who filed a motion for Reconsideration in the Glassman Case To view Dore's brief as submitted, click here.

-On Saturday, April 18th, not being Jewish, I attended a local service with about 10 other Jewish gentlemen. 10? Plus me? The local Rabbi had a table altar outside his home. Just him, 1. Some across the street, some down the block. ALL were 30 feet or more from each other. I sat on my porch and, with all the praying around me, it felt like I was in a House of God. The Peace of our Lord was all around me. It was beautiful.

ברוך דיין האמת Harav Yehuda Jacobs ZT"L Mashgiach Bais Medrash Govoha Lakewood

Matzav- With great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rav Yehuda Jacobs zt”l, longtime beloved mashgiach at Bais Medrash Govoah in Lakewood, NJ.

The levayah will be held at noon. To watch via Zoom, ID 87319838624 here and enter password 676992. To listen via teleconference, call 646.558.8656 and enter password 676992.

Rav Jacobs was a remarkable mashpiah, guiding and providing hadracha to families, yungeleit and bochurim for decades.

Rav Yehuda learned in Lakewood during the early days of Bais Medrash Govoah, when Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l was at the helm. He grew along with the yeshiva, eventually being instated as one of the mashgichim.

In an era of constant uncertainty, with new problems and crises develop with each passing year, at times replacing old ones and sometimes joining them, the path to the future seems to be cloaked in a perpetual fog. Standing tall, lighting the road for so many, was Rav Jacobs. His tender tutelage and acute insight accompanied thousands of Yidden along the pathways of life, coaching them and guiding them along the way.

Yated - Broken Hearts, Heartfelt Losses

Broken Hearts, Heartfelt Losses By Rabbi Pinchos Lipschutz - Apr 22, 2020
Yated Ne'eman
Our people have not experienced as difficult a period as we are living through now since the awful days of the Holocaust. We have not lost as many good people in as concentrated a time since then. Over the past few weeks, every day has brought fresh deaths and more news of people dying. People of all ages, young and old. People were hale and productive one day and the next day they were dead and buried.

Erev Yom Tov Situation Update

4/14/20 4th day ofChol Hamoed
STAY FIRM. STAY AT HOME WITH YOUR FAMILY.

SITUATION UPDATE  by local physicians

Chasdei Hashem, we are seeing a decrease in the number of new cases of COVID-19 Illness and of transports to the hospital with serious cases of COVID-19 illness. Nevertheless, we are far from finished with the disastrous effects of this horrific COVID-19 pandemic. Staggering deaths are still continuing throughout the day every day.

Many, many of us did not get infected with the COVID-19 virus during this pandemic.
Everyone should know that a person who was not infected by the virus during this pandemic
is NOT IMMUNE to the virus and could, ch v'Sh, EASILY GET INFECTED if they are exposed
to others with the virus.

This, therefore, places a strong obligation on every person who has or has had COVID-19 illness, whether confirmed by testing or not confirmed by testing.
