Concerns over a recently formed Group

Hamodia - LAKEWOOD - A recently formed group known as “Rise Up Ocean County” (RUOC) has drawn accusations of anti-Semitism with a movie trailer released online as a preview to what it says will be a full-length documentary on the growth of the Orthodox community in Lakewood and surrounding towns. Drawing particular ire was an opening monologue of one clip that adapts the words of a well-known Holocaust era poem by German cleric, Martin Niemoller, lamenting the results of failing to combat evil that affects others until confronted with it personally. However, Rise Up Ocean County’s narrator applied the theme to the cause of grassroots movements in towns surrounding Lakewood that discourage residents from selling their homes to Orthodox Jews...........

.. .. RUOC first launched its website and social media presence this past October. Its development was tracked by some community activists, but was largely ignored until the release of the film clips last week and the announcement of the full-length documentary in mid-February. While other internet forums have attempted to shine a negative light on Ocean County’s rapidly growing Orthodox presence, RUOC’s level of “professionalism” has elicited a higher level of concern.

“Most of what’s out there against Orthodox Jews is very amateur and rough around the edges. But it’s clear that a lot of time and resources were put into this, and the result is something that is peddling hate, but doing it in a way that could appeal — and I think has appealed — to a broader audience,” a local activist who requested anonymity told Hamodia.

TBL: Lawsuit upheld against Lakewood allowing Zoning change without traffic Enhancements

Take Back Lakewood article-   they pulled the wool over everyone's eye
TBL Claim "Incredibly - "it turns out that until today, Mayor Ray Coles and other  Township Committee members knew nothing about this lawsuit!!" there was one Township Committeeman who knew about it.

When the Master Plan proposed zoning changes that allowed higher density in certain zones, and allowed regular housing (instead of just senior housing) at Eagle Ridge, the changes were made contingent on
1) Significant road enhancements leading to a level C or better on the surrounding roads
2) Impact fees being enacted in the entire Lakewood

The Planning Board specifically made sure that the zoning changes would only take effect once these enhancements were made.  In early 2018, Augusta Holdings LLC filed a  lawsuit  they claim that the ordinance requiring roadway improvements, was in effect a moratorium and therefore violated their rights to use their land. They therefore requested that the restrictions placed on the zoning changes be removed. The Township Attorney sent a response on 3/15/18 saying that the Township only meant to allow the

Lakewood Medical Supply Company Assists Terminally Ill Woman

Gruntig- Two weeks ago, AvaCare Medical, a Lakewood-based online medical supply company, reached out to their customers, offering to help those impacted by the government shutdown.
Among the many customers who responded was one customer, Jamie Spinello, who wrote in that as a terminally ill woman whose only income is a military alimony check that hadn’t arrived due to the shutdown, she had lost all hope. At 5’7” and only 63 lbs, Jamie relied on that small check to pay for life-saving treatments and medication, but with the shutdown, she was delaying her treatments and wasn’t sure she would survive.

Township Reverses Policy: Will install Sidewalks in Lakewood Industrial Park

A win for  safety advocates ! At the workshop meeting last week  Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles said the township should install sidewalks in industrial park for the safety of the pedestrians that walk there now. The mayor said the sidewalks would be made from asphalt which is much cheaper than concrete and easier to place. It will be similar to the walking paths currently in Cedarbridge park.  See video below where
A Resident asks the Lakewood Industrial commission at the board meeting why they have a policy of no sidewalks in Industrial park. There are many schools located withn the industrial park with students and pedestrians walking the dangerous roadways and no sidewalks. The LIC says their policy is to make the park friendly to truck traffic and commercial industry by not having sidewalks which will encourage pedestrians to walk on the roads. Recently  schools wedding halls and other businesses have moved into the industrial park making it a safety issue for pedestrians.

Bingo Set to Upend Kosher Retail in Lakewood

Kosher Today
Lakewood NJ – The Lakewood kosher retail scene is about to absorb yet another dramatic change with the imminent opening of Bingo on Route 70 near the Home Depot. Reaction to the opening of Bingo’s second US store has been mixed with many customers anxiously anticipating the highly discounted goods that has made the Bingo initial Boro Park store such a success. Others on social media blasted the Israeli-based chain for “upending and uprooting our kosher stores.” Bingo’s ownership is a mix of an American partner and owners of the Osher Ad chain in Israel. Some retail experts describe Bingo as a cross between a discount kosher supermarket and a Costco despite the fact that the store is not a club. But Bingo does sell many non-food items, including shtreimels that Chasidim wear, for as low as $400 or 10% of what authentic shtreimels cost. In addition to the kosher independent retailers now in Lakewood, the new Bingo store is also receiving a cold shoulder from many manufacturers and wholesalers who resent the store’s heavy-handed approach to pricing. One wholesaler told Kosher Today that the Bingo buyer “essentially dictated to me what price he will pay me without any consideration to how much that would lower my margin.” But with a second store and greater buying clout Bingo is likely to be even more aggressive in its approach to buying. That strategy is likely to continue as Bingo plans a third store in Monsey and upends yet another community’s retail scene. For many Lakewood consumers with large families, the arrival of Bingo could not come soon enough. One wife of a young kolel student with four children said: “This is absolutely divine as the extra cash I will save will help me better support my family.”

The Lakewood kosher retail scene has evolved over the years as the primary shopping destinations moved from small stories and supermarkets that catered to the kosher community to large independent

A Vile Video trailer Anti Semitic Rhetoric

“The majority of the people in Toms River are very welcoming and very nice,” he said. “It’s just a couple of clowns who go on Facebook and make noise.”
-Deutsch said that most people moving to Toms River don’t want to live in Brooklyn, in high-density housing or in Lakewood.

The real estate agent criticized in the Facebook group, Abba Deutsch, said the Facebook page does not reflect his day-to-day interactions with residents of Toms River, where he lives and works. He said he never hears anti-Semitic comments while soliciting properties and has good relations with his neighbors regardless of religion. Deutsch said that he, like other haredi residents of the city, was drawn by its quiet streets and relatively spacious homes, compared to Lakewood.

(JTA) — The video, with suspenseful music playing in the background, opens with footage of a crowd of Orthodox Jews. Then it paraphrases a classic poem about the Holocaust. “First they came for my house, but I did not speak up,” the narrator says. “I said I am not willing to sell, and closed my door. … Then they came for my forests, but I did not speak up, because I thought I had no vested interests in the forests.” The script is a riff on the Martin Niemoller work lamenting the perils of inaction in the face of Nazi atrocities.

But the video, which was posted this month, isn’t meant to denounce Nazis. Instead its purported villains are Orthodox Jews looking to move to the Central New Jersey suburbs.

“The process by which Lakewood was lost was a simple one and has been seen in other parts of the Northeast over the last few years,” the description below the video says, referring to a nearby city with a large haredi Orthodox community and rapid population growth. “Offer generous amounts of money to acquire existing homes through pressure sales, build new homes at the expense of the environment, elect a majority to governing bodies and sieze [sic] control.”

Will the Super Ads run again

This past summer Some Lakewood publications enacted a policy to not accept for publication any advertadvertis showing pictures of shaites or hair locks. The policy was in  compliance with the request of many leading Lakewood poskim. There is no such policy for extravagant gashmiyus ads published weekly.

Will the same policy be enacted for super bowl related ads? Do poskim have an issue with חוקותיהם?
Every year leading up to the big game ads scream of super Sunday specials for those hosting superbowl parties, listing finger food, buffalo wings and other specials. Mainstream frum publications stopped running superbowl related ads. Will lakewood publications do the same.

The issue is not about following sports,  its about making it accepted and a kosher Jewish event. Yes,  it's easy to argue that following it sports is a kosher outlet and there are bigger issues to worry about, does that mean that it becomes mainstream and children will grow up thinking it's another yom tov event.

NJ Forecasters tracking Weekend Storm

The weekend storm will have to trend south in order to have a significant snow fall. first bout of wintry weather remains on track to hit New Jersey Thursday night creating the potential for a messy Friday morning commute, but the latest forecast updates from the National Weather Service show the state could be spared a major snowstorm over the weekend with temperatures expected to remain above freezing

New Jersey isn't out of the woods yet for weekend weather. The National Weather Service is still calling it a "significant winter storm" expected to arrive Saturday night and a deep plunge in temperatures on Sunday at the tail edge of the storm could cause flash freezing. There's also still a chance that a blast of arctic air could move in earlier to deliver a wintry mix, the weather service says. With the system still a few days out, forecasters say the track and timing are unclear.

Videos posted to social media showed the insects swarming around cleaners and worshipers in the city’s Grand Mosque, where millions of Muslim pilgrims congregate every year. “Specialized teams have been directed to work in the fight to eliminate these insects,” authorities in Mecca said, according to the Al-Araby Al-Jadeed news site. According to CNN, officials identified the locusts as migratory “black grasshoppers” and said that 22 teams consisting of 138 people were dispatched to deal with the infestation.

About the Hashomrim Cards

A Release published in support of cards designed to subvert children against their parents was greatly misleading The Voice Of Lakewood magazine, claims.
Shomrim cards features grotesque caricatures of frum adults using smartphones, and of children complaining of the negative influence their parents have on them. The cards are aimed at convincing children to demand that their parents stop using smartphones.  A Advertisement published in a Lakewood publication a few weeks ago expressed support for the cards and encouraged people to donate. It included a letter signed by the roshei yeshiva. TVOL has learned that the rabbonim were never shown the cards and the letter was merely meant to support a project promoting awarness to the dangers of smartphone usage. When shown the cards, the Rabbonim  strongly disapproved of their content and message.

Lakewood Math Teacher's Effort to secure more school funding continues

Administrative Law Judge Susan Scarola denied a state motion to dismiss a challenge to the school funding formula brought by a Lakewood High School math teacher Arthur Lang  APP reports

"Evidence and testimony presented by Lang "tends to show that (Lakewood Public School District) cannot provide a thorough and efficient education with the level of funding it receives under the (school funding formula) and that, as a result, the (formula) is unconstitutional as applied to the Lakewood public school district."

Lang said “I’m encouraged that we’ll be able to resolve the Lakewood funding conundrum,” he said. "It has been our position since we filed that the lack of funding has had detrimental effects upon student achievement and has reached constitutional dimensions."

His effort has been ongoing since 2014.

New Kosher Pantry in Hospital of University Of Pennsylvania (HUP)

Philadelphia - It took Bikkur Cholim of Philadelphia 20 years of perseverance, lobbying and cajoling but now, finally, Jewish cholim from all over the world will be able to have a user-friendly experience as they access one of the most prestigious medical centers in the world, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP).

Sadly, until very recently, frum patients in HUP didn’t have access to kosher food or other frum amenities for caregivers. All this changed with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the kosher pantry which took place on Thursday, December 5.

“Already 20 years ago, we realized how vitally important a kosher pantry would be for frum patients,” said Mrs. Malkie Schwartz, co-head of Bikkur Cholim of Philadelphia. “We started lobbying the leadership of the hospital back then, but, due to layers of bureaucratic red tape we were met with all kinds of obstacles.

Rav Avigdor Miller on Nachal Chareidi

Rav Avigdor Miller on Nachal Chareidi by Toras Avigdor

Q:
There has been talk in Eretz Yisroel about the frummeh agreeing to join the IDF in separate regiments called nachal chareidi. What does the Rav think about this?

A:
Some people are proposing to take frum boys into the army in frum regiments. You should know that it's a shtus, a complete foolishness. The army is made lichatchilah for the purpose of changing the minds of the boys while in the army. The purpose of the army is to make the youth into Israelis. This is something that their leaders have said long ago. And it's well-known by those who understand things. And we don't want our children to become Israelis. We want them to remain Jews.

More people moved out of New Jersey than any other state in 2018

Lakewood may be the fastest growing town in NJ but on a national level more people moved out of New Jersey in 2018 than any other state. Interestingly the high property taxes is not mentioned in the study.
Each year for the last 42 years, United Van Lines has released its National Movers Study, which examines which states U.S. residents are leaving, and which ones they’re moving to. In 2018, New Jersey leapt past last year’s champion Illinois to take the top spot … on the wrong end of the spectrum. According to the study, 66.8 percent of New Jersey’s moves last year were outbound, the highest rate in the country.
Illinois (65.9 percent), Connecticut (62 percent), New York (61.5 percent), and Kansas (58.7 percent) round out the top five most moved-from states.

Traffic Improvements at Cedarbridge Ave in Lakewood paid by Ocean County

LNN -  Ocean County  awarded contracts for major traffic safety improvements to 2 busy intersections in Lakewood, and 1 of those projects will be funded in part by the Transportation Trust Fund, which is funded by the gas tax increase.

Major upgrades are coming to Cedar Bridge and Oberlin Ave, which include road widening to 4 lanes in each direction on Cedar Bridge Ave and 2 lanes in each direction on Oberlin Ave, left turn lanes and new traffic lights with left turning arrows for all 4 approaches, and associated drainage upgrades.
On Oberlin Ave, the islands will be removed to make way for 12' left turning lanes, and 16' right/through lanes. On Cedar Bridge Ave, the road will be widened from Flannery Ave to fit the additional lanes. New curb and sidewalk, as well as drainage and infiltration basins, will be constructed. As an added bonus, during the morning rush hours, this light will be augmented, to increase the green light time for Oberlin Ave.

NJ Laws Taking Effect, health insurance Mandate, Ban on Smoking on Beaches

TRENTON (AP) - A ban on smoking at public beaches, a state mandate for health insurance and the ability for courts to take away guns from people who pose a danger are among the laws going into effect in the new year in New Jersey. There are about two dozen new laws taking effect in 2019, according to a tally kept by the nonpartisan Office of Legislative Services. A handful of them grabbed headlines when they passed.

New Jersey's minimum wage will rise to $8.85 an hour on Tuesday.

Smoking Ban: Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy signed the bill banning smoking at the state’s public beaches and parks in July, though local communities can opt out and designate small smoking sections. The law takes effect Jan. 16.
