Store front shot up at Lakewood- Howell Border

Insidernj.com -  Gun shots on Oct. 27th shattered the store front of Elisheva, the largest women’s wig store catering to orthodox Jewish women, cancer patients, and people of all religions who need a wig. Located in Howell, Elisheva also serves the entire Jewish community from Lakewood, New Jersey to Jewish people that travel from New York.

“The more hatred you show, the stronger we grow,” Herb Celler of Lakewood, New Jersey said after his business store front had gun shots blasted through the glass.

“People come from all over including New York to experience getting their sheitel, also known as head covering for Jewish women,” Attorney Daryl Kipnis, owner of Kipnis Law Offices said. “This antisemitic act targeted our Jewish community and one of the most prominent, well known businesses that serves Jewish women as well as cancer patients and people who need a wig. They’re the best in the business.”

Authorities Investigate Doll in Lakewood with Knife Through it

Authorities investigating a doll with a knife though its head into a tree in  Lakewood NJ. The Doll was wearing clothing similar to school uniform worn by local children. NJ1015 reports,The wooded area off on Swarthmore Avenue where the rag doll was found is near the Toras Menachem elementary boys school. Lakewood police chief Greg Myer spoke to school administrators after it was removed. No children saw the doll, according to the chief.
"Although the act is certainly disturbing in nature, there isn’t any evidence on scene to suggest that this was intended to terrorize or send a message of hate to any particular person or group," Staffordsmith said, adding that the case remained under investigation.

Pittsburgh Jewish Community copes with Tragedy

Hamodia- NEW YORK -
A day after a horrific shooting murdered 11 Jews at the Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh, the city’s Jewish community was still reeling from the gravity of the tragedy, thought to be America’s largest attack against Jews. Rabbi Sam Weinberg, principal and educational director of the Hillel Academy of Pittsburgh told Hamodia that the close-knit nature of the city’s Jewish community has made the events even more painful.

“I don’t think that I’ve adequately processed it yet,” he said. “We’re a small community where everyone knows everyone, so we are all affected…but we Jews are a resilient people and we will be bigger than this.” As the attack occurred Shabbos morning, many learned during davening that a shooting was in progress in the area. Congregation Poale Tzedek, a shul near the scene, was temporarily placed under a police lockdown while police neutralized the shooter at Tree of Life Congregation.

A town of Hachnosas Orchim

Repost: Parshas Vayera- The Capitol hotel was the place were many meshulachim and guests would stay while spending time in Lakewood, it has now gone. There are many private homes who offer guests to stay in for extended periods of time free of charge. B'H we have large homes with basements and attics to accommodate guests who stay in town. Its not only sleeping arrangements, but for food and meals, the Tomchei Tzedaka arranges nightly suppers and vouchers at local eateries. With both the Capitol and the former Solomon's suites closed, guest space is a bit harder to come by. However, local tzadikim and

Harav Chaim Boruch Wolpin, Zt”l, Stoliner Rosh Yeshivah

The levayah will take place at 11 o’clock Friday morning at Yeshivah Karlin Stolin, 5401-18th Ave. The aron will be flown to Eretz Yisrael on Motzoei Shabbos for kevurah.

Hamodia.com by Yochonon Donn (BROOKLYN) - The hand trembles and the heart weeps as I write about the beloved Rosh Yeshivah, a vibrant and powerful presence in the lives of those who knew him, in the past tense.
Harav Chaim Boruch Wolpin, zt”l, who was niftar Thursday afternoon at the age of 88, after a lifetime of Torah and avodas Hashem, was a paradigm of hasmadah and warmth for hundreds of talmidim during his four decades at the helm of Yeshivah Karlin Stolin in Boro Park. Within five seconds of the last amen ending Minchah, his hat was off and his eyes were already scanning his well-worn Gemara.

“My father was a role model of growing up in America, growing up in Seattle, growing up in a situation where everybody in his generation chose different paths,” a son told Hamodia. “People told my grandparents, ‘you’re destroying him, he should go to college, have a career.’ Learning in kollel was considered a very horrible thing to do, not to have a career. He was from the first.”

Update on Suspected Measles Case

CHEMED has identified a case of suspected measles in Ocean County New Jersey. An individual who had recently traveled outside the US was seen at CHEMED for symptoms consistent with upper respiratory syndrome associated with a rash. Preliminary testing identified an acute measles infection. However, these results are currently being confirmed by the CDC. The patient is no longer contagious and CHEMED is working closely with the Ocean County Department of Health to identify any possible exposures from this patient and to advise them whether they need to follow up with their primary care providers if they are not adequately vaccinated. Measles also known as rubeola is a viral infectious disease which usually starts with fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes and sore throat.

Noreaster storm Likely over Shabbos with 60 MPH Winds Power Outages expected

Patch- This could be the roughest weekend New Jersey has had in a while now that a noreaster is expected to bring 40- to 60-mph winds to the state – and even a little bit of snow. Power outages, downed wires, flooding and treacherous roads are the potential impacts caused by the storm.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for New Jersey, saying a coastal storm will affect the region Friday night through Saturday. There is the potential for strong, gusty winds, and the rain could be heavy enough to result in localized flooding. Officials from Jersey Central Power & Light say they are preparing for possible wind gusts as high as 50 mph this weekend in their service area.

Verizon Responds to Lakewood Petition: Not upgrading will turn phones into walkie-talkies

A Verizon spokesperson said in response to a  petition by a Lakewood resident asking verizon to keep the 3G towers in Lakewood to accommodate those who  abstain from using smartphones  and still use the 3G services on their flip phones.

"We are actively working with our customers to help ensure any transition needs are addressed as early as possible. The best experience for customers is on a 4G device".Verizon said in a statement.  NJ101.5 reports:

Verizon spokesman David Weissman said the networks that a phone can operate on is dependent on the cellular radios that are put in the phone when it is manufactured. If a phone is described as 3G, it likely doesn't also include a 4G radio. 4G is 10 times faster than 3G and that allows smartphones to run faster with more streaming capacity. When 4G was introduced to consumers, it maintained backward compatibility to 3G. But a 5G network won't have that same compatibility.

Weissman said that not upgrading the network would essentially turn their phones into walkie-talkies that couldn't be used outside of Lakewood as 3G networks are phased out.

Gov. Murphy in Israel: Antisemitism will not be tolerated in NJ

Gov Murphy in Jerusalem with  Rabbi Kotler
NJ Governor Phil Murphy is currently on a visit to Israel for a economic mission to strengthen ties with the state.  Rabbi Aaron Kotler of BMG in Lakewood, Chabad of NJ Rabbi Yosef and Mendy Carlebach and members of the Jewish Federation of NJ accompanied the Gov on his trip.
The Governor Tweeted from the Holy Land

"Anti-Antisemitism cannot and will not be tolerated in New Jersey, and we will continue to stand with all of our communities of faith. Groups that target religious communities do not represent the values of the Garden State."

While in Israel the Governor learned of the passing of his father in law father of his wife Tammy Mr. Edward Brown Snyder. Tammy Murphy told NJ media  she distinctly remembers being with her father who is Jewish at the Western Wall, where she'll pay tribute to him there during the envoy's scheduled trip to the holy site on Tuesday. In a joint statement they said:

"We consider ourselves lucky and blessed to have been able to speak with him one last time, only twelve hours before his passing As a proud member of the Jewish faith, his final ask of us was to continue our trip to Israel. Ever the mensch, he left specific instructions for services to wait until our return. With heavy hearts and tears in our eyes, we will dedicate our presence in this holy land to his memory.”

Legislation to Pass Assisted Suicide in NJ

Submitted.
Compassion And Choices, A leading national organization promoting legalized killing in America, has launched a million dollar digital ad campaign in NJ to try overcome resistance in the otherwise liberal state to pass Assisted Suicide legislation. This legislation would legalize what is now considered murder. Health care facilities would be allowed to actively kill "terminally" ill patients whom, they claim, at one time expressed the will to die. This is unadulterated murder, al pi Torah. [Pain can be controlled with modern medicine. Pain relief is a transparent pretext Assisted Suicide proponents use to dupe otherwise half- decent people.)

There may be action as early as Mon., Oct.15 in the NJ Senate Health Committee, and a possible floor vote by the entire Assembly Oct. 29. The new Gov. would likely sign it if it passes.

Over fifty Orthodox Rabbis from a very broad spectrum signed an unequivocal statement urging

Will Hurricane Michael Impact NJ?

NJ.com New Jersey has nothing to worry about in terms of getting a direct hit from Hurricane Michael, since the storm is barreling up through the Gulf of Mexico and not heading up the Atlantic coast.

During the past 24 hours, New Jersey has consistently moved out of the so-called “cone of uncertainty,” the wide bubble that represents the most likely track of the center of the storm. The forecast track of Michael’s remnants pushed slightly further south on Monday, and continued to trend further south Tuesday morning.

Seudas Hodaah for 3 Boys Rescued by Surfer at The Jersey Shore

Hamodia.com- LAKEWOOD - Three Lakewood boys were rescued from fierce waves by a surfer on a Jersey Shore beach over the recent Chol Hamoed Succos.

The incident occurred at a beach in the Monmouth County town of Spring Lake. The boys, two of whom were teenagers, were wading in the water, when a large wave unexpectedly pulled them into the Ocean where a strong undertow made it difficult for them to return to shore. Two fathers jumped in to attempt to save them, but were unable to fight the strong waves. One boy was able to swim to a jetty. The two others were noticed by a skilled surfer who was on the beach at the time who quickly swam out into the waves and was successful in returning the two other boys to the beach safely. It was one of several such close calls on the Jersey shore on the first day of Chol haMoed that saw many Lakewood residents head to beaches and boardwalks. The next day, authorities placed signs warning against swimming at several beach fronts.

After the completion of Yom Tov, the boys’ families held a seudos hodaah at which the surfer was publicly thanked for his integral role in the rescue.

Minhag in some shukls to sell the first Aliya of shabbos Breishis
A story in which the Maharik relates that in his time (fifteenth century), the custom in many shuls in France and Germany was to auction off the first aliyah in Bereishit. Large sums of money would thus be raised, serving to honor the Torah as well as to fund many communal needs. If a non-Kohen bought it, Kohanim would leave the shul. One time, a Kohen refused to leave and demanded to be given the aliyah. The Maharik ruled that the custom was acceptable, and the obstinate Kohen could be ignored (c.f. Beit Yosef, OC 135; Peri Chadash 135:3; MA 135:7).

Menendez vs. Hugin is a Senate race to watch

NJ 12- A United States Senate seat is up for grabs in New Jersey for midterm elections and political experts say that it is a race to watch.

A recent poll found a near dead heat between Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez and his Republican challenger Bob Hugin. The Stockton University poll found that Menendez leads by just two percentage points. But other polls found some different numbers. “I think it’s definitely a race to watch and I think it’s a race both sides should be concerned about and not call as a given at this point in time,” says Rutgers Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling director Ashley Koning.

A Rainy Sukkos Did Not Dampen Simchas Yom Tov in Lakewood

The weather forecast could not get it more wrong, There is a reason they are refereed to as נביאי שקר. They predicted rain but said it would be clear for the first night of Yom Tov with a 3 hour window during the seuda time. Instead it rained almost straight.

As people came home from shul the question was how long to wait before starting the meal. Do you hold out to chatzos hoping the weather will let up? what about the kids how late can they stay up?  Can you make a bracha of leishev ba’sukka in this weather?
Some   Rabbonim announced in shul not to wait more than an hour, others held out longer for a small break in the weather enough to make kiddush hamotzie and  start the meal. The scene repeated itself over the first few days of sukkos making it impossible to sleep in the succa the first few nights.

Instead of putting a damper on the yom tov people responded by looking for any opportunity to be mekayem the mitzva of yeshivas sukkah between the raindrops. It showed a chavivas hamitzva. Chazal say its a סימן קללה if it rains on sukkos some say it is only referring to the first night and only applies to Eretz Yisrael. The piskei Teshuva brings down from the bikurei yaakov that according to the rama that one can eat in the rain on the first night it is not considered a סימן קללה, to the contrary one gets more schar fr it.

4.3 Cents Gas Tax Increase, Other Taxes go Up in NJ

There is  more pain at the pump as of  Monday October 1, 2018 in New Jersey. Taxes on gasoline sold in New Jersey  rose 4.3 cents per gallon on Monday, a hike triggered by a slowdown in how much gas is bought in NJ. After this latest increase, New Jersey's will be 41.4 cents per gallon. New York is at 45.76 cents per gallon. The increase was met with anger from taxpayers still reeling from the 23-cent-per-gallon increase in 2016. But tax collections have fallen short the past two years, precipitating the Murphy administration's announcement last month that it was raising the tax again according to NJ.com

And that's not all. A few other taxes took affect. E-Cigarettes There is now a tax on the juice. It's a 10 cent per milliliter tax on nicotine liquid for vapers. The state will now also tax all online retailers not only Amazon. Air BNB rentals will also be taxed.
