Mahwah Settles Discrimination Lawsuit

“We commend Attorney General Grewal for standing up for religious freedom, and congratulate them on their settlement,” said Buchweitz. “The people of the Bergen Rockland Eruv Association have been enjoying religious freedom for over a year now in part because of the great efforts of people like the New Jersey Attorney General.”

Hamodia - Mahwah Township, New Jersey, reached a settlement agreement with the state resolving a lawsuit related to two ordinances that were alleged to be motivated by anti-Semitism, New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal announced Monday. One of the ordinances had banned non-residents from using Mahwah’s public parks, and the other banned the posting of eruv lechis – plastic strips on utility poles, within the municipality.

Guest post

I Harold (hershel) Herskowitz have no connection to this website or its content.

Once again today I received a call from someone asking me if i can remove something from my website. The website people are referring to is usually Hefkervelt. I usually dont care when I get such a call. I explain to the person that I not only have no control over Hefkervelt, I dont even know who runs it. I like anyone else submit my articles or requests in the comment box on a random post. If it is something I want posted or announced I respectfully ask the website owner to do it. I am very often edited and censored in what I write. I appreciate the owner for allowing me to tell his readers things I feel are important. He even allows me to announce special sales in my store. I appreciate that he has a website that is not under the control of people trying to hurt our town. I do not agree with much of his politics, but I respect his opinion.
Now to get to the point. Today I received a request from a very respected member of our community

Erev Yom Kippur 15 Girls still Not in School

It's Erev Yom Kippur 5779  in Lakewood and there are still girls out of school.
15 elementary girls waiting and a few girls still out of high school. Parents and children are heading into sukkos not knowing what will be. Some of those who were supposed to work on placement and deal with the issue went away for the yomim tovim and there  is no movement.
Hoping this gets taken care of before kol Nidrei. A Gmar Chasima Tova to all.

Tzedaka Priorities

ותשובה ותפילה וצדקה מעבירין את רוע הגזירה
To Whom Do We Give Tzedakah and Who Comes Before Whom?

Aseres Yemei Teshhuva between  Rosh hashana and yom kippur when many tzedaka requests are made by  Mosdos, Yeshivos individuals and organizations asking for donations as klal yisrael is in a giving mode of tzedaka during this time. we are bombarded by Tzedaka letters in the mail, robo calls, telemarketers soliciting donations, emails, a meshulach knocking at your door or approaching you in shul. Some have family obligations to support a relative.

If one can afford to give to all that would be wonderful, however not everyone is capable of that.  The question is is whom do I have to give

According to Halacha there are priorities in who to give tzedaka to first. Please discuss this with your Local Rabbi as there are differences of opinions.
Some Poskim rule that Hachzokas hatorah is the highest form of giving tzedaka.  categories in giving based on the shulchan aruch Yore Deah: The Laws of Tzedakah siman 251

Category 1: Captives, prisoners and matters of life and death- pikuach nefesh
Category 2: Very close relatives

Garden State Parkway: Eliminating Exact Change Lanes from the Toll Plazas

Photo: NJ.com
Patch- The Garden State Parkway has made a big change that could impact your commute by the end of the September. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority says it's getting rid of exact change lanes at its highway toll plazas, except for those on entrance and exit ramps. All coin machines will be removed from the 11 mainline barrier toll plazas. The work to remove the machines and convert the coin lanes to full Service or E-ZPass Only is scheduled to begin during the week of Sept. 24th.

Royal Prince comes to Lakewood
 Malchus!
Prince Edward, youngest of Queen Elizabeth II's children, and tenth in line to the throne will be in Lakewood today. He is scheduled to play a centuries-old form of tennis Thursday at Georgian Court University. The sport is played in an enclosed court with cork-based balls that are heavier and less bouncy than modern lawn tennis balls. Rackets are shorter than lawn tennis rackets and the rules of the game are more complex than the modern version. The prince is participating in a nine-day tour of the United States court tennis courts as part of an effort to raise support for his father Prince Philip's International Award program. The court Tennis court at GCU is the second to oldest in the USA built in 1899. APP

Judy Franco: No Media coverage on Newark welfare fraud
NJ 101.5 - A Newark family that managed a local convenience store is accused of taking thousands of unearned dollars through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by exchanging $5 million in benefits for cash.
"I’m pretty sure this story wont be covered with as much unabashed glee as it would be if there were Lakewood Jews involved, so I thought it was important to let you know"... many, many, many people from all walks of life from all races, religions, and ethnic groups steal from the welfare system every single day. I thought I’d let you know. If it weren’t so easy to defraud welfare, no one would.

Why I’m Taking Control of My Family’s Health Care by Joining a Health Share

by Victoria Dwek posted at Betweencarpools.com

Now, there’s finally an answer for the health insurance frustration we all endure. United Refuah HealthShare is the exciting alternative for Jewish families
In my house, like in any other, there are certain things my husband takes care of, and certain things I take care of. The bills, thank G-d, are in his court. Towards the end of each year, though, when it comes time to decide whether we’ll be staying on our current insurance plan or switching to a new one, it’s up to me to do the research, analyze the fine print, and decide which plan makes the most sense for us. Once I finish my research, I present the information to my husband, who gives me his go ahead to sign us up, trusting that I know our family’s health care needs and can determine what gives us the best value and cost efficiency.

Hurricane Florence Update

Hurricane Update: state of Emergency declared in the Carolinas and Georgia risk for impacts along the east coast has increased according to the NWS.
Florence is gradually strengthening with max winds of 70 mph, Rapid intensification expected Sun-Mon. Florence is forecast to be a dangerous major hurricane near the Southeast coast by late next week. Risk is increasing for direct impacts, but details remain uncertain as to exactly where it will make landfall. All those from north Florida to New York need to watch closely. Current trends have it making landfall in the Carolina's before turning north. However, that track will likely shift as it's still 5+ days away.

Hurricane Florence may Threaten East Coast

When will you put up your sukka? Hurricane Florence is 1000 miles out in the Atlantic but there is a chance that Florence could become a big issue in just over a week. A group of model simulations depicting possible tracks have begun to show the possibility of East Coast impacts  — especially near the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic coasts. Group of simulations from American and European  computer models from Wednesday night.
It’s important to keep in mind, however, that there is an equal shot of Florence passing far enough offshore that the United States sees nothing more than sunshine and

Jewish Agency Head Herzog visits BMG, Lakewood

Former Labor Government minister in the Knesset and now head of the Jewish Agency paid a visit to the Lakewood Yeshiva today, he tweeted about his visit:

Glad to visit the great Lakewood Yeshiva (NJ), headed by Rabbi Aron Kotler. His grandfather Rabbi Aron Kotler and my grandfather Rabbi Isaac Herzog were illustrious leaders & friends. Serving our people is a great cause and nice to see how it passes from generation to generation.

The families go back in history. During the engagement of Rav Shneur Kotler ztl
Rav Aharon was able to send his future daughter-in-law money through the Red Cross. Rebbitzen Rischel was able to occasionally communicate to Reb Shneur through Rav Herzog who was in Ankara, Turkey at the time.

At Rav Herzog's funeral, see photo below Rabbi Aharon Kotler  eulogized him as a “prince,” and spoke of his extraordinary Torah scholarship.

As of this afternoon following the announcement to open there are girls not in school, nevertheless a decision was made to open up.

LSTA Buses ready to roll, No changes until after Sukkos

The Lakewood Transportation Authority buses will begin Tuesday as schools have the first full day of the year. The  LSTA is in charge of setting up routes for 36,000 students  bused daily to Lakewood private schools. The routes are set and no change requests will be made until after sukkos. Officials say it takes some time for the routes to take root and ask everyone to be patient for the first few weeks. This year, bus stops have been consolidated and some kids have different stops for pick up and drop off. Primary kid parents must wait at the bus stop for pick up and drop off.
