Update on Family in Accident

The Van
An update on condition of the Lakewood family of seven that were struck by an 18-wheeler truck at 70 mph earlier this week.
The father Allon &  son Shlomo have both been released from the hospital.
Yosef Chaim had a true miracle happen.... he was supposed to have surgery on his broken hip and leg.   After much talk, the doctors decided to do it by hand.   They rescanned him after and said that it looked like he had never even been injured!
Yehuda, is conscious and breathing on his own.  Tests are still being done, and we should hopefully know more about how he’s doing later today.

To all that prayed,  thank you so much!!!   Hashem really listened!  The fact that anyone came out alive from that car is a miracle.  But all 7 family members??  That’s a true blessing from Hashem.

Lakewood Fires Busing Chief after draft report alleges mismanagement

The district spent Millions on purchasing its own fleet of school buses. Now a report  questions why the district still hired 3rd party companies if they can do their own busing. Th same buses that the BOE wants to lease to the township for Route 9 Shuttle buses

Lakewood owned enough school buses to cover its routes and questioned why the district still hired third-party companies to bus children on 67 routes.

APP  reports The Lakewood school board voted to fire its student transportation chief Wednesday just a week after receiving an unfinished report that said the schools may be overpaying for public school busing. The Board of Education hired Ross Haber Associate..to study the district’s transportation operations. The review focuses on how about 5,500 public school children get to school, and whether it’s cheaper to do that with district-owned buses or use contractors.

Plastic Bags May Cost 5 Cents Tax in NJ

Soon, you might have to shell out 5 cents per plastic (or paper) bag on New Jersey shopping trips.

Last week, state lawmakers passed a measure requiring a 5 cents-per-single-use-bag fee for shoppers. The bill, which legislators hope will bring the state as much as $23 million, is poised to pass — pending Gov. Phil Murphy’s signature. If Murphy does sign the measure, it would go into effect on October 1st. Lawmakers say it will cut down on waste and provide funding for environmental cleanups. Per the bill’s language, stores would get 1 cent of the bag fee, while the other 4 cents would go toward a fund for lead abatement in schools and communities, as well as an environmental public-information program, per the Inquirer. People enrolled in food-assistance programs and those 65 and older would be exempt from paying the tax.

WSJ: The Jersey Tax Spiral Continues

From the Wall Street Journal Editorial board
New Jersey’s Democrats are in a budget standoff between worse and worser, though it’s difficult to tell which proposal is which.

Governor Phil Murphy, who defeated the ghost of Chris Christie in last November’s election, is pushing for a new “millionaires tax,” which would bump the top rate on personal income to 10.75% from 8.97%. He also wants to add nearly half a percentage point to the sales tax, raising it to 7%. New Jersey already has the country’s highest property taxes.

Senate President Stephen Sweeney voted for a “millionaires tax” several times when he knew Mr. Christie would veto it. But now that state and local taxes can no longer be deducted on a federal return, Mr. Sweeney worries Mr. Murphy’s plan would send even more high-earning residents packing for Florida.

Many are traveling long road trips to or from the Midwest or other places out of town to attend a family simcha.

TR Residents seek Zoning Change for Houses of worship

A resident of Toms River is asking the town to repeal a zoning requirement that 10 acres is needed to build a house of worship.
APP reports  North Dover resident Scott Gartner, an Orthodox Jew whose efforts to bring a new synagogue to town have been stymied by the zoning restrictions. "Our community is growing. We want to do it the right way. The government is forcing us to do it the wrong way."  The Paper reports Gartner said he and other members of the Orthodox Jewish community believe the zoning change was aimed at preventing the construction of Orthodox Jewish shuls .

He said any lawsuit would argue the restrictive zoning violates the federal Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act. He said he and his Orthodox Jewish neighbors are being forced to gather to pray in private homes. Gartner said that a shul, which would be built with "normal zoning of two to five acres for a 5,000-square-foot building," could serve 100 to 200 Orthodox Jewish families and would allow families who live within one to two miles to walk to the building on the Sabbath.

Kosher Phone Industry Threatened by Decline of 3G Networks

Hamodia- Over the past decade, thousands of Orthodox Jews have bucked worldwide trends and opted for more basic cellular phones in an effort to protect themselves from the ever-increasing dangers of modern technology. Recently, the “kosher phone” market is facing its latest in a quickly changing catalog of challenges as providers move to phase out 3G service, the network of choice for most in search of internet-free mobile devices.

While most who do not follow technological developments closely are unaware and most likely uninterested in the scientific and industry background behind the phenomenon, many people with 3G phones could not help but realize the effects.

Kids Home from school?

What to do with all the stuff in the backpacks?
Tips from Lakewood based Real Life Organizing follow on Instagram
Kids School Stuff  Decluttering:
We all know that kids artwork🖍, papers📝and old school books📚📓can accumulate really fast! Here are some tips to conquer the clutter monster:

1) Give each child a “junk box”. When it is full, it is time to get rid of stuff!
2) Go through it right away! Don’t wait! The clutter will be every where!!
3) Put the backpacks🎒in storage, if you plan to reuse them. Don’t leave them on their hooks or coat closet. It will just get in the way with the camp🧢🕶/swim gear.
4) Take photos 📸 of sentimental items like report cards and other projects and then discard (gulp😯)!

Torah Links seeks Home for Fellowship program

Torah Links is looking to build a much needed school and home for its Lakewood fellowship program. The future site will be on Central Avenue next door to Chabad of  Lakewood.
Rabbi Gruman testified previously in front of the Planning board about the Lakewood fellowship program hosting undergraduate students with programs through the year  such as internship programs and religious programs. There will be a residential facility on the second floor the application allows the maximum of 75 beds. The neighborhood was chosen since they students have developed mentor ship with residents  of the area over the years. The pre med  students have been mentored by doctors who live in the area and this one building will help consolidate everything under one roof. Its important to have it surrounded by a neighborhood that supports it. Regarding Parking the plan has 53 parking spots, most students do not have their own car most of the students are transported by 2-3 shuttle vehicles. No outside functions will take place at the facility the environment will be distraction free to the students.

The application will continue to be heard this evening at the Planning board meeting.

Lakewood Schools To Require students to use Clear Backpacks After Gun Incident

LAKEWOOD, NJ Patch  — Students in the Lakewood School District will be required to use clear backpacks when school starts in the fall as the district continues to look at measures to improve school safety, district officials said Wednesday evening.
Lakewood School Board Attorney Michael Inzelbuch said the district is introducing the requirement in response to the June 5 incident where a fourth-grader brought a handgun on a school bus and into school. In addition to the requirement for clear backpacks, the district will have metal detectors in all of the elementary schools by next week, he said, making it the first district in Ocean County to have them at all its schools. The high school and middle school already are equipped with metal detectors.

In prepared remarks to the Orthodox Union advocacy mission Us Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced "A Place to Worship Initiative," aimed at raising awareness "about legal protections under RLUIPA [Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act]  he spoke about towns abusing zoning laws to keep religious institutions out of their backyard.
Too often, religious schools and their students face discrimination.  Some local officials even try to keep them out of their backyard by abusing zoning laws.

Lakewood Public Elementry School to Install Metal Detectors

Inzelbuch said Metal detectors have already been approved by the BOE, and that they could be installed within the next 10 days.
