Governor Murphy signs bill to reinstate ObamaCare individual mandate

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) on Wednesday signed a bill into law that will reinstate the Obamacare individual mandate as the state attempts to stabilize its health care markets The Hill reports.

The bill implements a statewide fee for New Jersey residents who don't obtain health insurance through their job, Medicaid, or another source, NJ.com reports. The plan is similar to a provision of the Affordable Care Act that was repealed by the GOP tax law last year. New Jersey Democrats sent the bill to Murphy's office last month, making the state the first to reinstate the individual mandate after the Republican repeal of the federal provision.

Card Cash Company Creates Giant American Flag from Used Gift Cards for Memorial Day

In honor of Memorial Day, CardCash, based in Lakewood the largest gift card exchange in the world, put their used gift cards to work in a giant American Flag made completely out of gift cards. The cards are arranged in a collage format and form the flag using the actual gift card designs and colors. See Video below

CardCash’s employees worked for a week on the flag, sorting through their massive stockpile of used gift cards for red white and blue cards. “The biggest challenge has definitely been finding the right cards for this project within our extensive card collection,” said Steven Weldler, VP of Marketing for CardCash. “However, this has been one of

Bill to outlaw Underage Marriage Pulled at Last Minute, Due to Religious Objection

Sefardim and Chasidim could breath a sigh of relief, for now.
A last-minute religious objection derailed the final passage of a bill Thursday that would have outlawed teenagers under 18 from getting married in New Jersey
See HERE The bill was passed recently by the NJ Judiciary committee

NJ.com reports State Assemblyman Gary Schaer, D-Passaic, told NJ Advance Media he had been approached by members of the orthodox Jewish community requesting the legislation allow for religious exceptions. Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, D-Middlesex, agreed to pull the bill from the voting session's agenda at Schaer's request, scuttling the bipartisan measure's almost-certain passage.

The bill passed both houses of the Legislature in 2017, only to be conditionally vetoed by then-Gov. Chris Christie, citing the same concerns Schaer raised Thursday. Christie, a Republican, said he would sign the bill if it were rewritten to give a judge discretion to approve a marriage license for a 16 or 17 years old.
If the bill is signed into law, New Jersey would be the first state to remove all exemptions permitting child marriages.

Gas tax in NJ Likely to Go Up Again by 3 cents

The 23 Cents Gas  Tax in NJ may get a tax hike again this Fall, according to this report. An increase in New Jersey’s gas tax this fall looks increasingly likely, as collections have fallen behind expectations. “I’m going to say about 3 cents, maybe. It’s a really rough, off the top of my head estimate,” Frank Haines, the Office of Legislative Services budget and finance officer, said Monday at an Assembly Budget Committee hearing.
When the nearly 23 cent per gallon increase was approved in 2016, it was done so through a formula that guarantees the state a predictable level of revenue -- $1.16 billion, on top of the existing gas tax collections that already existed at the time. Read more at NJ101.5

Thousands of Guests coming to Lakewood and surrounding area for Shavuos

The City of Torah will be host to thousands of guests for the upcoming Yom Tov. Parents, in-laws and extended family will spend the Yom Tov of Shavuos in Lakewood. Most families stay home for shavuos and dont leave town as they do for Pesach and Sukkos.
In previous years everything was centered around the Yeshiva  from learning shavuos night to shiurim and shmuessen by the Roshei Yeshiva and mashgichim. As the town spread out far and wide and people moved to neighboring towns, the demographics have changed.

The local shuls in developments and other areas now provide full shavuos learning programs for all ages throughout yom tov.

Since this year is a 3 day yom tov, with shabbos, many people will be walking across town to eat meals at relatives and friends. The weather wont be that hot but expect rain and thunderstorms on shabbos and the second day of Shavuos. Sunday will be mostly clear a high of 81 with spotty showers. Lakewood organizations and township will supply lighting and security around town for shavuos night.

A Powerful Speech at a Bris in Lakewood

from an Email sent out to friends of Renewal saving lives through kidney donation.
Special Bris Today May 11, 2018 - 26 Iyar, 5778
Dear Friend of Renewal,

This morning there was a bris (the ceremony of circumcision.) in Lakewood, NJ where the father shared the following words:

"I stand here at the bris of our son Yishai with a trembling heart. I still, am trying to wrap my head around what happened this past week.  So that all of you can understand what I am talking about let's rewind a bit.

At 6 months of pregnancy the doctors discover that both kidneys were inflamed. We davened that the doctors should be wrong. Month 7, more scans. - we start hearing all sorts of scary words - Blockage. Inflammation.  bilateral hydronephrosis posterior urethral valves. Down Syndrome. All scared, we started begging Hashem for a miracle.  Month 8 turns into 9 and all scans confirm what the original diagnosis was.

Kids Should Not have to be Kept Busy on Friday

Lately there are programs and camps geared for boys keeping them busy on Fridays in the summer months. The Friday schedule in Lakewood for boys and girls is a very short day. Girls are going to school for just about 2 hours on Friday. In some cases the buses dont get there before 9:40 and at 11:15 they are getting dismissed! Yes busing is an issue, but its not fair for the kids and for the parents who now have to shorten their Friday workday even more. Boys should not have to be bored and kept busy because they are home at 12:30 pm on a long summer Friday.

The overall Friday schedule in Lakewood should be changed. The town schedule can no longer be dictated by playgroup moros schedules or busing.
In Brooklyn, schools end on Friday during the winter at 1 o'clock. Lakewood is not a young town with couples leaving to NY on Erev shabbos. Most businesses finish Friday work day at 1:30- 2:00 pm on Friday's. Even the Yeshiva first seder is cut short on Friday because of the playgroup schedule.

Now that the Busing is no longer controlled by the BOE the schools and town leaders can focus on making Lakewood a 1:00 pm Friday instead of 11:30. Perhaps a solution is to Stagger dismissal times have the girls dismissal at 12:30 pm or 1:00 and boys dismissal at 1:30 or 2:00 pm.

NJ Assembly votes to Ban Marriage in NJ for Anyone under age 18

Sefardim and Chasidim will have a hard time getting married in NJ  if Gov. Murphy signs this bill into law. Today the NJ assembly judiciary committee voted in favor of A865, the bill to ban anyone under 18 from getting married in NJ. The state of Delaware signed it into law today and is the first state to do so.

The measure simply prevents a person under age 18 from getting married in New Jersey. Currently, anyone who is not an adult may marry with permission in New Jersey. for those age 16 or 17, a parent or guardian may give the ok.
If you are under age 16, a judge must approve the marriage.

Gov Christie Vetoed it last year saying it  “would violate the cultures and traditions of some communities in New Jersey based on religious traditions.” He also called it “disingenuous” to say that teens are unable to consent to marriage, given “New Jersey law permits the very same 16 year old to obtain an abortion without so much as parental knowledge, let alone consent according to a report in NJ Spot Light Read more HERE

והחי יתן אל לבו

By Rabbi Pinchos Lipschutz -  May 9, 2018
Yated Neeman
Who can remember a week such as the one that just passed? Who can ponder the loss of so many good people and not recognize that they cannot go on living their lives as they have been?

On Wednesday, Moshe Reich was in Tzefas preparing for Lag Ba’omer, joyfully hosting many people in his home on a centuries-old narrow cobblestone street, when his soul returned to its Maker. A prominent Klausenberger chosid and close friend of Arye Deri, he was well known for his engaging personality, askanus, and acts of tzedakah v’chesed. Shock spread throughout Israel and around the world.
On Thursday, Mendy Klein was in Cleveland, outside of the Hebrew Academy, a major focus of his life and philanthropy. He collapsed and was gone, a giant cut down in his prime. The shock was overwhelming as word spread across the Torah world. The reaction was similar everywhere: “Mendy Klein? What? I can’t believe it.” The energetic, life-giving supporter of Torah, yeshivos, schools, needy people, victims of abuse, and so much else had died. The man who ran away from attention and honor during his lifetime was praised and mourned following his tragic petirah.

Rav Shaul Shatzkes, who suffered a stroke a few months ago, never recovered and passed away on Thursday. He was a tremendous talmid chochom, baal kishron and marbitz Torah. He was a sheim dovor in Lakewood, where he lived and dedicated his life to Torah.

Agudath Israel Statement on Exit From the Iranian Nuclear Agreement

Agudath Israel Statement on Exit From the Iranian Nuclear Agreement
In July 2015, upon consultation with its rabbinic leadership, Agudath Israel of America issued a statement regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA ) expressing deep concern as to whether the agreement is in the best interests of the United States and its allies.

We noted that Iran was a rogue state that had fomented terror and destruction throughout the Middle East and had vowed the annihilation of Israel. Nothing in JCPOA had required, nor instilled confidence, that Iran would renounce these activities and objectives. And,

State offers $28 Million "Loan" to Lakewood School District

The State of NJ offered Lakewood school district a $28 million dollar loan to plug the budget for the upcoming year. Currently according to reports Lakewood owes the state $47 million from previous loans.

Officials were hoping for a grant that wont have to be paid back. APP reports the state wrote in a letter that Lakewood district leaders did not turn over documents backing their request and can not offer a $28 million grant.
Board attorney Inzelbuch said he was not aware that he state could not access the information according to APP
The BOE will meet on Wednesday and decide on accepting the loan which will obviously have to be repaid by Lakewood taxpayers

BOE Meeting Rescheduled

Lakewood BOE Statement:
As you may or may not know, a large part of Lakewood was affected by a JCP&L power outage, which affected approximately 13,000 customers (4,500 in Lakewood) causing the district to cancel its Budget Hearing that was scheduled to be held at Lakewood High School this evening.

The Board of Education has its General Board of Education meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at 7:30 p.m., at which time, a Budget Hearing will also be held.

A Binyan for The Minyan

Last night the Lakewood Zoning board approved the new home for the Minyan Shelanu on rt 88 in Lakewood. The meeting lasted over 4 hours with the Minyan application was heard at the end. Earlier a application to build a Duplex on Lincoln street in the Arlington neighborhood was denied by the board after neighbors came out to oppose it. The arguments were that the Township vacated Melville in 2014 it was done on condition that there will not be more homes put up in the area.
