Words from the chef, Jason Cappetta (former chef of Ottimo Cafe)
"There really is nothing quite like starting up a new restaurant. Its like building a plane from scratch and hoping it will fly. It's an idea, it's a spark of passion, a collaboration of dreams, love, hard work and talent. It's finding out people's skills and nurturing them , it's identifying their weaknesses, overcoming them and finding out what they are made of. As a chef , it's taking what you have learned from years of physical and mental exhaustion and building a team that will execute the ultimate vision. The odds are against you, but still you see it through." Photos courtesy of Elan Kornblum

"Surreal" The Yated and the Rubashkin story
Yated Neeman
Surreal
By Rabbi Yitzchok Hisiger - Dec 27, 2017
It’s a day and a moment that I will forever remember. We had dreamed, we had prayed, we had hoped. We had talked, we had read, we had pondered. We had written and we had reported. Shalom Mordechai had become part of our lives in some way, shape or form.
While Shalom Mordechai’s belief in his salvation seemed ever-present, we, in an honest moment, will admit that we had moments of questioning and doubt. There were good tidings and then there were apparent setbacks. Our emotions seemed to be on a proverbial roller coaster for about a decade.
The reaction we witnessed to the phenomenal news this past week was a reflection of just how personal Shalom Mordechai’s plight was to Klal Yisroel across the globe.
Here at the Yated, we didn’t just report on Shalom Mordechai. We seemed to be living his saga week in and week out.
I recall like yesterday when Rabbi Lipschutz became the first member of the Jewish media or of any Jewish group to publicly recognize and bring attention to the miscarriage of justice perpetrated in this case. He had the courage of his conviction to wholly devote his newspaper – and, in truth, his life – to the cause of Shalom Mordechai.

‘Can I go back to the cell?’ “I have to say a prayer (bentch).’”
Excerpt from Article in Yated Mei’afeilah L’orah – From Darkness to Light
And so it was that on the last day of Chanukah, a guard went to Shalom Mordechai’s cell and told him, “Pack up and leave. Get going.” “What’s the problem?” he asked, not daring to hope. Maybe they were going to transfer him somewhere. That would not be unusual. “You’ll find out. Just get going.”
He had just washed for hamotzie in his cell for a humble seudas Zos Chanukah. He grabbed his tallis and tefillin with a small Chovos Halevavos inside and went to the prison office. After a few minutes, the warden appeared. “Congratulations,” he said, holding out his hand. “President Trump has commuted your sentence. You are free to go, as soon as someone comes to pick you up.”
“My father was shocked,” a family member related. ‘It’s a Chanukah miracle!’ he blurted to the warden. “After a few seconds of deepest heartfelt thanks to the Ribono Shel Olam, he came back to earth. ‘Can I go back to the cell?’ he asked. “I have to say a prayer (bentch).’” “‘No, you can’t go back there,” the warden said. ‘You stay here.’
“So he sat down and bentched until my mother came to pick him up. And what a bentching that was.”

LPD: Victim in Fatal Crash struck Twice
Patch -- A Lakewood man has been identified as the pedestrian killed on Christmas Day when he was struck by two cars as he tried to cross Cedar Bridge Avenue, Lakewood police said.
Roger A. Conover, 45, died Monday evening at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood, where he was taken following the accident, Lakewood Detective Sgt. Gregory Staffordsmith said.
Conover was crossing Cedar Bridge Avenue just west of Martin Luther King Drive about 7:30 p.m. when he was hit by a 1997 Nissan Maxima driven by a 47-year-old Jackson Township woman, Staffordsmith said. The Nissan was eastbound on Cedar Bridge, he said. Conover was then hit a second time by a 2017 Toyota Sienna that was westbound on Cedar Bridge and was being driven by a 33-year-old Lakewood man, Staffordsmith said.

Why Lakewood Rabbis Voted for Trump
Great American Thinker BY Rabbi Yaakov Menkin
Not Just Jerusalem: Why America's Rabbis Voted Trump and Don't Regret It
Yes, you read correctly. America's rabbis voted for Donald Trump.
Given the common belief that Jews are liberal, this may come as a surprise to many. But not only do Orthodox Jews (the traditionally observant) have very different political leanings from their more liberal brethren, but they now encompass the vast majority of American Jewish clergy.
Lakewood, N.J. is the home of the largest rabbinic seminary in America and home to tens of thousands of its alumni. In a few square blocks, you'll encounter more rabbis than liberal seminaries have produced in several decades. Lakewood also produced the largest pro-Trump majority in 2016 of any New Jersey town, despite a higher percentage of immigrants, impoverished, and non-whites than most other pro-Trump communities.
Rabbis voted Trump not for financial benefits; it is liberal candidates who support generous government programs. They supported him not simply because of his pro-Israel posture, although he has exceeded expectations with his new, commonsense approach to the right of Israelis to live in peace and security. Neither did they blind themselves to Trump's failings. They do not support what he said on a bus 12 years ago or appreciate the un-presidential things he says or tweets on a daily basis. They look askance at casinos and beauty pageants and have little patience for "reality TV."
So what is it about Trump that they liked on Election Day, and like even more a year later?

Rubashkin and Lakewood
Rabbi Pinchos Lipschutz of the Yated Neeman talks to the Lakewood shopper about Rubashkin and his connection to the Lakewood community:
"Nowhere was Reb Shalom Mordechai's plight more keenly felt than here in Lakewood, says Rabbi Pinchos Lipscuhtz. "Thousands of people came to the rallies we made in Lakewood". He got the most chizuk, the most letters, the most connection from Lakewood. It was a beautiful thing to see, he wanted to come to Lakewood the day after he came home to personally thank the community for standing behind him. And while logistically the proposed Thursday night event did not work out, there are plans in the works to have Reb Shalom Mordechai come to Lakewood next week.

Audio: R' Yehoshua Balkany Discusses the Rubashkin Release on Talkline Radio show
Last night on the Zev Brenner show Rabbi yehoshua Balkany brother in Law of Shalom Mordechai Rubashkin discusses the release. He slammed Senator Chuck Schumer for opposing Rubashkin’s release when President Trump initially asked him to write a letter in support of a presidential pardon. Trump would have done it sooner if not for the intense criticism he faces on a daily basis from the media. He said it was Satmar and not Lubavitch who spearheaded the campaign to free Rubashkin from prison. A group of 24 stamar chasidim are to thank for igniting the campaign joining both factions of Satmar who worked day and night. They visited him every week and took on a large financial chunk. He mentioned Rabbi Pinchos Lipshutz of the Yated for helping with lawyers and advertisements spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising that brought up millions of dollars to help R' Shalom Mordche for the great injustice

“Nes Chof Hei” Wake Up and Smell the Coffee!
By: Yehuda Zayit
In News that can only be dubbed as classic Chanuka vintage, Turkey’s President announced that it will move its embassy to East Jerusalem, the future capital of Palestine – Just as you thought Trump’s Yerushalayim proclamation pushed Israel past the finish line.
The timing here is not happenstance – the “pach shemen” or cruse of oil’s message, resonates, Bayomim hohaim Bazman Hazeh.
World events don’t hinge on political clout – The menorah exhorts us all, when Hashem wills it so, it’s lights out! Jewish history plays tricks on the dead – the likes of Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan and the rest who lived from the immediate moment.
The Hasmonean legacy of “veal hamilchamos she-asisa laavoseinu” debunks air force general, Tamir Eshel’s assertions that the new F-134 plane yields “unimaginable military power”.
It intones, Israel military Braggadocio is to reality, what Babe Ruth is to Shakespeare. The I.D.F. is currently eager to share the wealth of culture it espouses with the Torah oriented. Instead Chanukah’s revelation intervenes: Put aside the F-135. Why not share the stealth – the knowledge that a higher source writes the script of civilization in the Mideast – not some top Israeli brass from the land of bilk and money.

Matzav: Tragedy Averted after Table Caught Fire
Photo: Matzav.com |
A potential for tragedy was halted last night after a table caught fire from a menorah at a home in Lakewood, NJ. In an exclusive interview with Matzav.com, the homeowner, a resident of Blue Jay Way, off of Massachusetts Avenue, explained that he had no choice but to think quickly after the heavy duty plastic table on which his family had lit their menorahs caught on fire.

Chabad and Toms River in settlement talks over Discrimination Lawsuit
Chabad of Toms River filed a lawsuit last year against the town claiming anti Semitic hostility towards their efforts to build a shul. APP reports that assistant Township Attorney Anthony Merlino said the two sides continue to discuss settlement terms, but no agreement has been reached. He described the negotiations as "fits and starts sort of process."
Rabbi Moshe Gourarie filed in a federal civil rights lawsuit against the township in March 2016, charging that "anti-Semitic hostility" and local opposition to the township's ultra-Orthodox Jewish population are the reasons why the Chabad Jewish Center has been told it needs a variance to operate as a house of worship. The Light of Chanukah
Chanuka is here! The yom tov brings simcha and kedusha to all mishpachos. Families get together and spend time with each other. Yeshivos hold annual mesibas bringing talmidim together. Friends and neighbors host chanuka parties, special programming for children all over town. Stores add to the flavor with chanuka sales and free donuts. Its a time to forget the long winter nights to forget the darkness and let the light of chanukah spread kedusha and lechtikeit to all.

Halacha of Joining Health care Share insurance
Open enrollment deadline approaching Tomorrow those who cant afford are joining religious based medi share health sharing groups. Some of these groups make you sign on to share in their religious beliefs. For these Halachic issues speak to your Local Rabbi there are various opinions on this subject.
Letter printed in Hamodia.
As a part of the lower-middle class, I can definitely relate to the controversy over the Affordable Care Act, aka “Obamacare.” Premiums are just getting more expensive, and deductibles make coverage out of reach for basic health care needs.
I’ve recently been introduced to the concept of health care sharing, and am intrigued by the potential benefits, especially to the frum community. Health care sharing, in simplified terms, involves an organization whose members share common beliefs and pay a set amount per month, which goes toward their own and/or others’ medical bills. Monthly payouts are low ($198-$298 for a couple, with a $1,000 “deductible”), and there is no government intervention, as health care sharing is NOT a form of insurance. Members of health care share groups are exempt from Obamacare (non-insurance) penalties.

Open Enrollment Deadline is Tomorrow
From Cosmo Insurance
Many Americans still have not signed up for health insurance. The open enrollment deadline is days away and if people fail to sign up, they’ll find themselves having to pay the Obamacare penalty next year. Most Americans don’t know that you have a 30 day look period to try out your new health insurance plan. There are other things to look for the last of people who have not signed up yet. HeatlhCare.com gives five other tips for these Americans:
1. There’s an estimated 4.5 million uninsured Americans who qualify for a bronze plan with no monthly cost. Even those who won’t use their health insurance can get free preventative care and avoid the Obamacare tax penalty.

Rav Shteinman's Tzavaah for Lakewood: Establish a Vaad Hachinuch
The City of Lakewood, NJ was Zoche to host Rav Shteinman Zatzal 4 times while he came to give chizuk in chutz Laaretz. Despite his old age Rav Shteinman traveled all over the world giving chizuk to yidden in frum communities. During one of his visits to Lakewood either in 2006 or 2010 a meeting took place at the home of the Lakewood Rosh yeshiva, in attendance were roshei mosdos roshei Chabura and other askanim. The discussion surrounded Chinuch issues and Rav Shteinman encouraged those assembled to create A vaad Hachinuch that will be staffed by Mechanchim and Rebbeim to deal with the school acceptance issue. Unfortunately to this day it has not happened, it's time to establish it now.
While there are selfless individuals who deal with placing children in schools, a vaad hachinuch is essential to make sure kids get placed in the right school that suits their needs. The decisions should be made by Mechanchim as Rav Aaron Leib suggested. Watch the famous Video of Rav Shteinman were he adamantly yells Gaaveh Gaaveh gaaveh pertaining to not taking kids in to school for "Frummeh cheshboines" גאווה, גאווה גאווה.
