Despite the Hype, Orthodox Toms River Residents say Town Has Welcomed Them

Article published in Hamodia newspaper edition.

Media headlines have largely portrayed Toms River as a charged battleground between long-time residents and the growing influx of buyers from the Orthodox community. Yet, those who have actually moved to the town or dealt directly with buyers say that their experiences have been overwhelmingly positive, discounting ugly reporting to story hungry reporters and “a few bad apples,” in what they see as a largely welcoming town.

When over two feet of snow covered much of the northeast this past January, Shia Mayer, who had moved to Toms River a few months earlier, looked out his window to see one of his neighbors plowing out several houses on the block. When he reached his driveway, Mr. Mayer thanked the volunteer plower saying that his goodwill was especially appreciated in light of the fact that his daughter, who was staying at their home, was expecting a child imminently.

Appeals court hears Amit Borenstein Jail death arguments

APP reports The Amit Borenstein case has returned before a federal judge, attorneys say the legal errors were made during the trial  "The 2010 death of Amit Bornstein in Monmouth County Jail returned before federal judges last week as attorneys made oral arguments in the ongoing appeal of his family's wrongful death lawsuit. Three judges for the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia heard the case Thursday.
A federal jury in March 2015 determined corrections officers at Monmouth County Jail did not violate Bornstein's civil rights when they scuffled with him twice before he died in custody in 2010. Bornstein's father initially sued both Monmouth County as well as Correct Care Solutions, LLC, the vendor that provides medical care at the jail, alleging civil rights violations and negligence."

Toms River honors man who rescued jewish baby in fatal crash

VIN Lakewood, NJ - Just one month after the horrific death of an Orthodox Jewish mother from Toms River in a collision, a local man was honored for rescuing her infant daughter from the mangled wreck.
As previously reported on VIN News, Leah Eisdorfer of Toms River was driving on New Hampshire Avenue on March 9th when her vehicle inexplicably crossed the yellow line and plunged down an embankment, killing the 28 year old instantly.

Pesach pricewars

Competition is a good thing. Pesach food shopping is in full swing and the price wars have begun. The Lakewood supermarkets and grocery stores are advertising sales and specials on many products. Stores also are selling cheaper by the case at discounted prices. Options of ordering in bulk through the likes of Moadim L'simcha or local shuls also help ease the financial burden. Special Pesach circulars were sent out with many sale items for yom tov shopping. The addition of new supermarkets in Lakewood at least for now has brought down food prices and forced other stores to be competitive. Eventually prices will go up but for now food shopping has become somewhat affordable.

Hearing tomorrow for Yeshiva Na'os Yaakov

NJjewishnews A Lakewood yeshiva, which has encountered stiff opposition to its plans to build a dorm for young men in Ocean Township, will be given new hearings after a federal court overturned the Dec. 1 denial of its application.

The March 17 order by the federal court for the District of New Jersey resulted from litigation brought by Yeshiva Gedolah Na’os Yaakov against Ocean and its zoning board of adjustment, claiming they had violated the First and 14th amendments of the Constitution, as well as the federal Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act and Fair Housing Act, by placing an undue burden on the yeshiva.

Judge rules Yeshiva Naos Yaakov application to be heard

APP reports "A religious group's application for a Talmudic Academy will be heard again starting April 5, after a federal judge sent it back to the town's Zoning Board. The Rosh Yeshiva is Hagaon Harav Shlomo Feivel Schustal shlita. The report states "Yeshiva Gedola Na’os Yaakov was denied its application for a use variance to renovate an existing school building at 1515 Logan Road and turn it into a Talmudic academy — a 96-student boarding school for advanced Jewish studies. The zoning board voted down the application on Dec. 1 after more than a year of boisterous hearings, including a July 2015 meeting where over 1,000 community members packed the Ocean Township High School auditorium, exceeding the capacity and forcing the board to adjourn."
