Do you know there were fire elections?
Talk about insulting its readership. You wouldn't know there were elections for fire commissioner if you get your news from the Lakewood scoop or the voice of Lakewood or the Lakewood shopper. None of them reported much on the elections both prior and even this week what the results were and who one. The Yated Neeman did cover it in the Lakewood section. While you may say who cares about fire elections? well it was only last few years that both the the scoop and the shopper went to town with full coverage of the elections pushing for their candidate. If it was not of that importance why did the Lakewood vaad go all out with robo calls and placards asking the residents to come and vote on Motzei shabbos? Dont call yourself the voice or heartbeat of the community when you withhold news items for other reasons.
Lakewood paramedic saves elderly woman's life on EL AL flight
Mitzva goreres mitzva, Israeli website kikar shabbat reports, Veteran Lakewood Hatzolah member Simcha Shain, and Mrs. Jenine Shwekey of the special childrens center were returning from the Israel trip that brought a Lakewood boy with special needs to Israel. Mrs. shwekey noticed an elderly woman sitting next to her was experiencing shortness of breath and heart problems. She immediately called on Simcha who administered first aid and stabilized the woman with oxygen until help arrived when the flight landed in NY. The pilot announced to the passengers they literally saved the woman's life.

The Yeshiva capital of the world
TOMS RIVER —NJ.com The township adopted an ordinance Tuesday night barring real estate solicitors from two areas in the North Dover section of town. The ordinance passed with a 5-0 vote from the Township Council, and will remain in effect for five years."You know what's going on in Lakewood, they want to make it the Yeshiva capital of the world and God bless them if they do, but they're using up all the space in Lakewood and they're spilling over," Kelaher said. At issue is what residents in the area, which shares a border with Lakewood, describe as "intense, incessant and intimidating direct solicitations" of real estate, according to the ordinance. Though many of the real estate agents hail from Lakewood, a town with a booming Orthodox Jewish population, Toms River Mayor Thomas F. Kelaher stressed that this ordinance is not anti-Semitic in nature. "It's strictly based on the type of conduct (the realtors) rely on," Kelaher said in a phone interview with NJ Advance Media. AP clarifies Lakewood is a Litvish town
The Chasidim did not take over, yet. The Associated press clarified its story about Lakewood Hasidic residents buying homes in neighboring towns. In a statement this is what the AP said.
LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) — In a story Feb. 23, The Associated Press reported that a conflict over housing in Lakewood, New Jersey, was caused by an influx of Hasidic Jews. While the town has a large population of Hasidic Jews, according to Avi Schnall, the state director of Agudath Israel of America, an organization representing Orthodox Jews, the story should have noted that the majority of the Jews in Lakewood are of Lithuanian Ashkenazi descent and that Orthodox Jews overall are driving the housing crunch.

LPD issues warnings instead of tickets
In a nice gesture the LPD has been issuing a printed warning letter on illegally parked cars. Instead of ticketing right away in cases of minor infractions, the cops give a courtesy warning first. Neighboring Howell cops who have a bad rap for issuing tickets also gave out warnings recently.

Matzav - Busing crisis averted, for now
Matzav.com Lakewood, NJ – The courtesy busing crisis has been resolved, but for the moment, no one will say how, reports Shannon Mullen for the Asbury Park Press.
The resolution of the crisis was made clear at a Township Committee meeting earlier tonight, as Mayor Menashe Miller told attendees at the auditorium in Town Hall on Third Street that there would be courtesy busing until the end of the 2016 school year and that it will not cost the township more than the one million dollars the municipality already promised the school district this past summer, even though it was previously said that $2.5 million would be needed – just weeks after voters were asked to vote on a $6.2 million tax levy to keep the courtesy busing.
Sounds confusing? It is, but parents are breathing a sigh of relief, the lack of clarity notwithstanding.

Cory Booker Scrubs Mentor Shmuley From His Memoir
Observer.com - Sen. Cory Booker retaliates against close friend Shmuley Boteach over Iran deal criticism. The Garden State Democrat released his first book, United, recounting personal stories of his “political and personal awakening.” Mr. Booker’s message is one of cooperation—working together for the common good. With more than six pages acknowledging people to whom the senator is “indebted,” Rabbi Shmuley Boteach stands out as a glaring omission. He’s entirely unmentioned in the book. The well-known rabbi (who writes frequently for the Observer) is known to have enjoyed an unusually close friendship with the senator for more than 20 years, since they met at Oxford University, where Mr. Booker was a Rhodes Scholar and Mr. Boteach headed the prestigious school’s L’chaim Society. When a reporter brought the omission to Mr. Boteach’s attention, the rabbi wasn’t surprised the senator did not acknowledge his impact on Booker’s life, explaining, “It’s no secret that our relationship has become very strained, as I was shocked that Cory voted for the Iran deal.” Since
Reports- Courtesy busing to continue only for next 4 months
Pending lawsuits has forced the NJ dept of education to back off their threat and keep to their deal regarding courtesy busing. The referendum was exposed as nothing more than good old extortion. The monitor attempted to get more tax money for the districts spending woes by threatening to cut courtesy busing. Busing will continue only for the next 4 months. After that the games begin again.

Seniors oppose, Igud offers tentative support for busing deal
The Seniors oppose the current busing deal being considered, APP.com reports SAG members are "outraged that taxpayer money would be used for courtesy busing after nearly 99 percent of voters rejected a referendum Jan. 26 asking for an additional tax levy of $6.2 million for that purpose. Meanwhile, in an email, to the APP "Rabbi Moshe Weisberg, the leader of the Igud Hamosdos, an organization that represents the Orthodox Jewish private schools, offered "tentative" support for the township aid plan, "if it will lead to multi-year framework for a partnership agreement between the Township, the District, the schools and the State.". Township willl discuss the deal this Thursday.

Lakewood Chaveirim responds to over 190 calls
The numbers don't add up
Flashback this was posted 6 weeks ago! Surprising only now politicians acknowledge numbers were skewed.
The 6.2 million referendum on courtesy busing is in 3 weeks so far not a word from the Vaad, Igud or any of the politicians who asked for OUR vote. They dangled the busing threat in front of our eyes scaring the tzibbur into voting for their candidates. Now when it's actually happening we do not hear a word. Getting back to the numbers one wonders why it's 6.2 million. The r referendum is only for the last 5 months of the year. The boe pays up to $900 a year per student for busing. Cut that in half it's $450 per student on the referendum. According to the district calculations the referendum is for 8000 kids who will lose courtesy busing. Do the math at most it's 3.6 million. It may even be cheaper since children who get courtesy busing live in closer proximity to each other and the school which should be a cheaper bus route. Why is there such a high deficit? Is it the raise given to teachers after the budget was passed?

Magazine, features Lakewood Toy store
Edplay- Fifteen years ago, Harold Herskowitz came up with a plan “to open the coolest toy store anyone had ever seen.” Why toys? The father of five, including a set of quadruplets, was going broke buying his kids playthings that, to him, had little play or skill-building value. What he needed were “toys for thought.”
“I also wanted to give a gift to my community,” adds Harold, a former real estate executive.
“I wanted my store to be the FAO Schwarz of New Jersey.”
His community – Lakewood, in central New Jersey – is a hub of Orthodox Judaism; home to one of the largest yeshivas in the world. About an hour away from Atlantic City, Lakewood was once known for its fine hotels. Today, its downtown is quaint but rundown, he laments, and “steps toward local development are just abandoned. People aren’t interested in coming to the area.”
Harold, however, is doing his part to revitalize Lakewood, beginning with transforming the worst eyesore in the neighborhood into a colorful, toy-filled funhouse.

Winter storm downgraded across NJ
Very little snow, if any, has fallen across New Jersey and the National Weather Service has downgraded a winter storm warning. The snow expected to fall in southern and central New Jersey today and Wednesday won't be as significant as forecasted. A winter weather advisory is in effect until Wednesday morning for portions of northern, central and southern Jersey. Forecasters say 2 to 4 inches of snow are possible. Forecasters say accumulating snow will affect Tuesday's evening commute and the ride to work on Wednesday. Tidal flooding remains a problem along the Jersey shore. AP

This event will also give you time to ask questions questions of the state Co-Chairs and our petition coordinator. Pizza, sushi, and soft drinks will be served. Seventeen years ago, Rabbi YZK and his wife, then a young kollel couple, welcomed their firstborn son into the world. The joy they felt was indescribable. But very shortly after they learned that young K had develemental disabilities. Instead of dwelling on this apparent misfortune, Rabbi YZK and his wife rededicated themselves to the new nisayon they were presented with.
When it came time to send their son to yeshiva, a new challenge arose. Due to the complex combination of his social, emotional, behavioral and learning disabilities, no Lakewood school could accommodate him. Sending him to New York every day was not an option. Seeing no other alternative, in 2006 rabbi YZK founded Yeshiva Oros Yisroel to serve the special needs of his son and any other children with similar challenges.

Lakewood Chaveirim place cones in potholes across town
Lakewood, NJ – After Lakewood was hit with snow, and the weather changing from cold to warm, and the plowing affected the roads as well, this weekend Chaveirim received a huge influx of calls of flat tires.VIDEO: Chaveirim members placing cones in large potholes that r causing flats, as DPW gets to repair them. #pothole pic.twitter.com/dwYImnDxJh— Lakewood Chaveirim (@LkwdChaveirim) February 7, 2016
Dedicated members decided to take preventative action until the Department of Public Works repairs all the potholes. Drivers should be extra cautious while driving, as very expensive damage can be done to vehicles possibly costing thousands of dollars. Hitting a pothole while driving slowly significantly reduces the damage.
