Rt 9 Proposal Eliminates Turning Lanes at Central & Hurley Intersection, Convert it to Northbound Lane

Updated: This project  in the making since 2016  is closer to  being implemented  as LNN reports a DEP study ordered by the county has been done.

The NJDOT proposal to ease traffic on Rt 9 Through Lakewood calls to eliminate left turning lanes from Rt 9 onto Central avenue and on to Hurley. By doing so it will open an additional lane on Route 9 going north bound which will take away the bottle neck that causes a mile back up at that intersection. Officials noted that these left turning lanes only allow a few cars to turn per cycle of the trffic light. So, If you are coming from 7-11 on rt 9 North you will not be able to turn let onto Central avenue. Your only option is to go from James street to Sunset or to John street to Cedarbridge and back up from Hurley. Same for motorist traveling from Rt 9 South coming from rt 88 you will not have an option to turn left onto Hurley at the gas station you will have to turn left at rt 88 or at John street.
Other key fixes along route 9 intersection
-Adding wider side walks on southern part of rt 9 for a 1.7 mile stretch
-Intersection of Locust street adding a right turn going to the west onto route 9 North for traffic coming off 70
-Cross and chestnut will be adding additional right turn lane a thru lane and a left lane
-Broadway and chateau will get a traffic signal adding left turn lanes to rt 9
-Oak street and rt 9 will be adding a traffic light
-Prospect street adding right turn lane for rt 9 south bound more space for trucks turning
-James & Pine widening providing two lanes
-Extend the turning lane from rt 9 south to rt 88 first street will be right in right out only.

  1. Here is a genius suggestion. How about stopping to build on the highly over-congested strip of route 9?
    Shouldn't that come first?
The fact that there is building on the problematic road proves that it's all a sham. Don't fall for the political maneuvering.
If they cared at all, the first thing would be to place a moratorium on building along that strip of road.
    What a sad joke.

  2. Not one township committee member or vaad representatives at this meeting shows how much they give a hoot about traffic in Lakewood.
Same goes to all those who complain about traffic but didn't bother to show up.

  3. ATTENTION LAKEWOOD TOWNSHIP COMMITTEE MEMBERS:
    ARE YOU LISTENING TO US?
CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY ON BROADWAY BETWEEN RIVER AVENUE (RT9) AND PARKVIEW THERE WAS NEVER A SIDEWALK INSTALLED? THE WAY THE PLAZA IS DESIGNED, 90% OF THE PLAZA TRAFFIC HAS TO ENTER/EXIT FROM BROADWAY, INCLUDING TRUCK TRAILERS, ETC. AND YOU HAVE WOMEN WITH 2,3 4, 5 CHILDREN PLUS DOUBLE STROLLERS WALKING IN THE STREET DUE TO THE LACK OF SIDEWALK. AND THEN AFTER A TRAGEDY HAPPENS, WE ALL SIT THERE WITH OUR SERIOUS FACES ON, PLEDGING SAFETY, ETC.
    WHO APPROVED IT?

    1. While we are mentioning moments of genius by members of the planning and zoning board, which MENSA members on those boards approved of a development with it's only entrance/exit directly across from the Sunoco gas station? There are crashes there all the time

  4. I don't live on sunset but that's not fair to them / they should widen the bridge and ad lanes and they should open every single paper street from 88 to route 70 and cederbridge to cross. Adding traffic lights on the nine is just going to slow down traffic and stop building developments like chateau on route 9 so we don't have stick another traffic light in. People gonna get killed crossing pine if its two lane each way . . just need open up Arlington and vine and allow traffic to flow through there

    1. Sunset Rd will need speed bumps, and a to reconfigure the intersection of sunset and central. Just shifting problems elsewhere.

  7. Exactly what is the plan?? The way I understand is you are taking the traffic from route 9 and central/hurley to route 9 and james/pine. What exactly is being accomplished??? James and route 9 is backed up just as bad. So basically they're making bad a little better and the other bad to worse. Maybe widen route 9?? Stop building?

    1. This reminds me of something Reb Isser Zalman says:
Why do we start on Shabbos from שוכן עד, on Yomtov from הא-ל בתעצומות and on Rosh Hashana/Yom Kippur from המלך יושב?
Easy! Because on Shabbos we finish פסוקי דזמרא with רם ונשא, on Yomtov we finish with את שם קדשך and on RH/YK we finish with והנורא בנוראותיך.
Now you ask why do we finish at different places?
That is a different question. But at least we answered the first question.

(Quoted by Reb Moshe Mordche in one of his Seforim)

  8. The question is how much time is saved by making 2 lanes start just one block earlier? is the trade off worth it? Does central ave turning north onto the 9 get 2 turning lanes? Maybe they should buy out the gas station - (I think it is for sale) and make a jug handle over there? It may even help with the flow of traffic getting rid of cars making a left onto hurley..

  9. Makes a lot of sense to me. As noted, those turning lanes aren't very usable either way, especially the southbound ones. Just wondering, any plans to move things quicker on the local level? Cross St. needs to be widened immediately. So does Cedarbridge, Clover and Rt. 88 (though the intersection of Rt. 88 now has houses very close up.)

  10. Crazy ideas. Truth is, once upon a time there was a great commiTTeman named ???? who made a turning light at 9/hurley. He also extended the light allowing approximately 20 cars (plus after the light change) to turn and reduced the backflow up central that used to go al the way to New Central. But, the Vaad decided he's a "bad apple" after he went to R' Chaim and recorded his opinion K'neged the vaad, so he was booted out of town, threatened with major Mesiros, and was forced to live in Springfield!

  11. Idiocy at its best! How can residents of Central all the way to Jackson get from Rt 9 Quick check or First Commerce, home??
We must vehemently oppose such naarishkeiten. Never eliminate turns without a parallel route. Sunset is not a viable substitute.
The Real answer is, thatRt 9 is State Road and that's all they care about. The 9 is what they want should move. They don't care if it means backing up and inconveniencing every other street in town.

  12. This is a fantastic idea, if ever gets implemented...
By getting twice as many cars through the intersection per light, would probably eliminate all the traffic between James and Central north bound.
It would benefit traffic between Prosect and James too, as many times cars going north on Rt 9 cannot cross the James/Pine St intersection. By clearing the traffic north of James, many more cars will be able to get through the intersection thus easing up the traffic.
The turning lanes currently are a waste, only 1-2 cars can go per light because of the constant flow of opposing traffic. Most people probably use Sunset or MLK now anyway so it won't make much of a difference.
This is the kind of solution that we need, yelling "stop the building" all day will accomplish nothing. We need real solutions to the traffic problems in this town, even some that will cost money. This is the reality in this town and we need to deal with it.

  13. I live in the area and think it is a good idea. The 9 to hurley light is not a major deal.as you have 88 or john as an option. The left onto Central is very hard and I very often use Sunset anyway. Ushng the gas station as a jughandle is a great idea. They should also make Central 2 lanes from sunset to 9 and allow both lanes to turn on to 9.

  14. I guess it's time to expand Sunset then. Sunset needs 3 lanes northward at Central.
