NJ Forecasters tracking Weekend Storm

The weekend storm will have to trend south in order to have a significant snow fall. first bout of wintry weather remains on track to hit New Jersey Thursday night creating the potential for a messy Friday morning commute, but the latest forecast updates from the National Weather Service show the state could be spared a major snowstorm over the weekend with temperatures expected to remain above freezing

New Jersey isn't out of the woods yet for weekend weather. The National Weather Service is still calling it a "significant winter storm" expected to arrive Saturday night and a deep plunge in temperatures on Sunday at the tail edge of the storm could cause flash freezing. There's also still a chance that a blast of arctic air could move in earlier to deliver a wintry mix, the weather service says. With the system still a few days out, forecasters say the track and timing are unclear.

The immediate concern is the fast-moving storm Thursday night that could drop as much as 4 inches of snow on western Passaic County and 2 to 3 inches in Sussex County. Areas along the I-95 corridor could get 1 to 2 inches, the National Weather Service said Wednesday morning. Northern parts of the Jersey Shore and inland parts of South Jersey are likely to get less than an inch of snow, with the Atlantic City area seeing mainly rain.

Forecasters warn that Friday morning's commute is likely to be tricky in much of the state before the storm quickly moves away from our area.

While the National Weather Service says Atlantic and Cape May counties will see at least some snow, AccuWeather.com says a large swath of the state could receive mixed precipitation.
