Administrative Law Judge Susan Scarola denied a state motion to dismiss a challenge to the school funding formula brought by a Lakewood High School math teacher Arthur Lang APP reports
"Evidence and testimony presented by Lang "tends to show that (Lakewood Public School District) cannot provide a thorough and efficient education with the level of funding it receives under the (school funding formula) and that, as a result, the (formula) is unconstitutional as applied to the Lakewood public school district."
Lang said “I’m encouraged that we’ll be able to resolve the Lakewood funding conundrum,” he said. "It has been our position since we filed that the lack of funding has had detrimental effects upon student achievement and has reached constitutional dimensions."
His effort has been ongoing since 2014.
Last year, Lakewood schools accepted a $28 million loan from the state to balance their budget and stave of cuts to staffing and programs. The district's $165 million budget for 2018-2019 includes $100 million in tax revenue and $65 in state aid, which includes the loan.

ReplyDeleteI know Mr. Lang has spent a tremendous amount of effort and sacrifice in pursuing this with the intent that the State correct it's flawed formula. the question I have is, if the administrative court does eventually rule that adequate education is not provided, does that mean that the State finally has to pay its share, or does that mean that the state can force the municipality to raise local taxes beyond the 2% cap?

ReplyDeleteWhile another was busy sucking the BOE dry, Mr. Lang was working hard in resolving a long standing issue for all of Lakewood without any compensation. I guess extortion pays, Yay Go Piners.
