There will be a live stream Hookup of the levaya HERE
It is with great shock and sadness to reports the sudden passing of Rav Yitzchok Paler zt”l, Rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Mekor Chaim in Lakewood, NJ. He was 67 years old. Rav Paler was a son of Harav Binyomin Paler zt’l, the previous Rosh Yeshiva.

Rav Paler suffered a massive heart attack earlier tonight and was niftar a short while later. The Levaya is scheduled tentatively for 1:00 pm Monday October 22 at the Yeshiva  160 Locust street in Lakewood with the kvurah taking place in Eretz Yisrael at Har Hamenuchos. The ramp from RT 70 to Locust St will be closed 12pm to 5pm
The yeshiva relocated from Boro Park to Lakewood 6 years ago.

From Matzav- Rav Yitzchok was a son of Rav Binyomin Paler zt”l, who was one of the closest talmidim of Rav Yitzchok Zev Soloveitchik, the Brisker Rov. During World War II, Rav Binyomin joined the Mirrer Yeshiva and escaped the horrors of the Holocaust in Europe by finding refuge with the yeshiva in Shanghai. After the war, Rav Binyomin joined his chaver, Rav Leib Malin, from the Mir, in establishing Yeshivas Bais Hatalmud in Brooklyn. The next year, he was appointed as a maggid shiur at Yeshivas Chasan Sofer, the yeshiva headed by his father-in-law, Rav Shmuel Ehrenfeld, the Mattersdorfer Rov. Rav Binyomin eventually became the rosh yeshiva there.

Gov. Murphy in Israel: Antisemitism will not be tolerated in NJ

Gov Murphy in Jerusalem with  Rabbi Kotler
NJ Governor Phil Murphy is currently on a visit to Israel for a economic mission to strengthen ties with the state.  Rabbi Aaron Kotler of BMG in Lakewood, Chabad of NJ Rabbi Yosef and Mendy Carlebach and members of the Jewish Federation of NJ accompanied the Gov on his trip.
The Governor Tweeted from the Holy Land

"Anti-Antisemitism cannot and will not be tolerated in New Jersey, and we will continue to stand with all of our communities of faith. Groups that target religious communities do not represent the values of the Garden State."

While in Israel the Governor learned of the passing of his father in law father of his wife Tammy Mr. Edward Brown Snyder. Tammy Murphy told NJ media  she distinctly remembers being with her father who is Jewish at the Western Wall, where she'll pay tribute to him there during the envoy's scheduled trip to the holy site on Tuesday. In a joint statement they said:

"We consider ourselves lucky and blessed to have been able to speak with him one last time, only twelve hours before his passing As a proud member of the Jewish faith, his final ask of us was to continue our trip to Israel. Ever the mensch, he left specific instructions for services to wait until our return. With heavy hearts and tears in our eyes, we will dedicate our presence in this holy land to his memory.”

Last night, an atzeres tefillah was held at his shul, where divrei hisorerus were delivered by speakers, including his son-in-law, Rav Nosson Levin, rov of the Somerset Walk Shul. Five kappitlach of Tehillim were then recited and the name Alter was added as a zechus for his refuah.

Vaad Expected to Endorse Menendez

With elections 2 weeks away the Lakewood Vaad is expected to endorse Senator  Bob Menendez in the NJ senate race. With elections 3 weeks away some polls have with GOP candidate Bob Hugin pulling within two points of incumbent Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez. a memo released by national research  latest internal campaign survey continues to show Bob Hugin and Bob Menendez in a statistical dead heat,” The recent survey has “Hugin at 40% and Menendez at 42%.”.

Senator Menendez gave an exclusive interview this week to The Voice of Lakewood magazine detailing his support for Israel, his vote against the Iran deal, fighting BDS and more locally healthcare reforms through Obamacare and helping to bring  Chemed health facility to Lakewood .

Hugin paid a visit to Lakewood a month ago and met with local officials and businessmen.

A Few Tips for the Gabbai about Hagaba on Sefer Breishis

Dear Gaabai, Please make sure that Hagba during these weeks is performed in a way that is proper kavod haTorah and shouldn't give anyone in shul, heart failure. There's been too many close calls where people near the bima end up catching the sefer.

As we read the parshios of Breishis  the sefer Torah is rolled  that the left side is heavier making it harder for a righty to lift up during Hagbah. The newer sifrei Torah are lighter but older sifrei torah  are heavier.

The Mishna Berura writes that Hagbah  should be given to someone who has the strength to lift and turn the Torah without needing to sit immediately. If one knows they do not have the strength to do it properly they should decline the honor. Although generally one should not turn down an invitation for an Aliyah, we don’t find this with Hagbah, albeit the greater honor.
 A Few important tips:

 1) Please whoever is performing Hagbaa ask them if they have the strength and technique to lift the sefer Torah. Try giving to lefty's or able bodied men.

2) Gelilah should also be given to someone with knowledge to immediately secure the atzei chaim and begin rolling the sefer Torah

3) Very important for the Gabbai to stand nearby within an arms length until after gelilah is done.

Thank You
K. H.

Property Tax Increase in Lakewood

Lakewood tax rate increased to 2.098%. That means, homeowners will now pay $2,098 a year in property tax for every $100,000 assessed value of their home. A home evaluated at $500,000 will pay over $10,000 in  property taxes.

After the township recently reassessed  all the properties in Lakewood last year the values went up but the tax rate was lowered to 1.95%. Now they raised the rate to 2.098%.
A report in the Lakewood shopper says that owners of older homes in Lakewood got hit the hardest with their taxes going up over $1000 a year.  Since those homes were appraised much lower, after the reassessment they received much higher appraisals for the estimated values of their homes and the property taxes went way up. The prices of real estate in town has gone up thanks to the many outsiders moving into Lakewood who are paying higher prices for their homes. Moving away is not an option for old time residents who have nowhere to go and would like to remain in their current homes. The older homes do not have rental incomes from basements to help cover the taxes but share the same tax rate as the new construction homes. Property taxes have been raised twice since the

Traffic in Lakewood Causing people to Lose Parnassah

Its election season and soon they will boast about the traffic improvements and fixes that were made over the year. Traffic has a In some spots it may have eased up but overall the traffic is terrible.
Its no laughing matter but people in Lakewood rely on Waze to get to work for a commute that should take no more than a 10 minute drive takes over a half hour. People can not make it to work on time and are docked for the missing hours loosing their pay. Congestion also takes an economic toll on the economy and businesses lost productivity of workers sitting in traffic, the increased cost of transporting goods through congested areas,  wasted fuel, among other factors.

30 minute on rt 9 traffic, Central avenue over 25 minute delays, James/pine street backed up even with a cop directing traffic! It feels a bit quicker but you end up sitting at the other new traffic lights. Prospect/Williams, County Line, Cedarbridge with daily back ups. .The new developments at Oak Vine and elsewhere are adding more cars, while there was no improvements or roads built to improve the infrastructure. Playgroup morahs were forced to close or relocate because parents could no longer drop off because of the traffic.

Residents  who complain are told to get used to it "Lakewood is now a city" if its a city where is the city planning by the Township committee?
Can they look everyone in the face and show what what was done to fix the infrastructure after they passed the master plan. They will just Blame everyone else blame the county blame the state blame blame blame, take no responsibility and expect to get the votes too..

Lawsuit: Lakewood paid Manager Hush Money to Keep Silent

APP Reports-  A Lawsuit has been filed in superior court by a group called Lakewood Citizens for Fiscal Integrity and Lakewood resident  Larry S. Loigman against the Township and its mayor.

Lakewood's former township manager, who got a $327,000 severance package when he resigned in September, received "hush money" to stay quiet about municipal affairs in violation of state law, a group claims in a lawsuit filed Monday. The lawsuit alleges Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles "engaged in a conspiracy" with the former township manager, Thomas Henshaw, and other township officials, to reach Henshaw's separation agreement. Henshaw's separation agreement provided for $327,000 in payments, which includes his salary through the end of 2019. The suit claims Henshaw should have received far less money just a few months' salary."

The Rotting Foundation That Threatens Our Home

Printed in this weeks Yated Ne'eman  BY By Rabbi Avrohom Birnbaum -  Oct 10, 2018

"How safe is the amazing edifice of Torah and chesed that we have so painstakingly built in the more than 70 years since the end of Churban Europe?"

"The fact that your average, middle-class family is having tremendous difficulty paying tuition, marrying off their children, and often even having difficulty getting their children into schools and yeshivos are problems for which the communal leadership must find solutions. Communal breakdown occurs when those in whom the public has faith are perceived as indifferent or even antagonistic."

Yated- “Depressed” is the term that properly encapsulates my feelings after being subjected to the indignities of the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation to the Supreme Court.

More than anything, the process, the no-holds-barred nature of the sordid circus, made me worried perhaps for the first time about the future viability of the American experiment. For two centuries, America has been an amazing experiment in democracy, never before seen in the world. It has also been a force for good, peace and prosperity in the entire world, and has probably been responsible for the most benevolent period of our golus since the churban Bais Hamikdosh.

Legislation to Pass Assisted Suicide in NJ

Submitted.
Compassion And Choices, A leading national organization promoting legalized killing in America, has launched a million dollar digital ad campaign in NJ to try overcome resistance in the otherwise liberal state to pass Assisted Suicide legislation. This legislation would legalize what is now considered murder. Health care facilities would be allowed to actively kill "terminally" ill patients whom, they claim, at one time expressed the will to die. This is unadulterated murder, al pi Torah. [Pain can be controlled with modern medicine. Pain relief is a transparent pretext Assisted Suicide proponents use to dupe otherwise half- decent people.)

There may be action as early as Mon., Oct.15 in the NJ Senate Health Committee, and a possible floor vote by the entire Assembly Oct. 29. The new Gov. would likely sign it if it passes.

Over fifty Orthodox Rabbis from a very broad spectrum signed an unequivocal statement urging

Kiryat Sanz to be Established in Lakewood

The Sanz Rebbe from Eretz Yisrael Rav Tzvi Elimelech Halberstam has instructed his followers in America to address the  housing crisis among his chasidim due to the high cost of homes in Brooklyn.  A committee was formed and looked into various areas they settled on Lakewood and plan on building a Shechunas Sanz that will be affordable and spacious. This is not to be confused with Sanz Klausenberg who already established a kehilla in Lakewood they are followers of the Rebbe from Boro Park Rav Shmuel Dovid Halberstam. The new sanz community will have approximately 118 housing units with potential for more building. The address for the new kirya has not been disclosed.

Will Hurricane Michael Impact NJ?

NJ.com New Jersey has nothing to worry about in terms of getting a direct hit from Hurricane Michael, since the storm is barreling up through the Gulf of Mexico and not heading up the Atlantic coast.

During the past 24 hours, New Jersey has consistently moved out of the so-called “cone of uncertainty,” the wide bubble that represents the most likely track of the center of the storm. The forecast track of Michael’s remnants pushed slightly further south on Monday, and continued to trend further south Tuesday morning.

Perhaps this should call for a Yom Tefillah on behalf of these 20 neshamos that are on the streets for no fault of their own. Why is this not a priority!

Seudas Hodaah for 3 Boys Rescued by Surfer at The Jersey Shore

Hamodia.com- LAKEWOOD - Three Lakewood boys were rescued from fierce waves by a surfer on a Jersey Shore beach over the recent Chol Hamoed Succos.

The incident occurred at a beach in the Monmouth County town of Spring Lake. The boys, two of whom were teenagers, were wading in the water, when a large wave unexpectedly pulled them into the Ocean where a strong undertow made it difficult for them to return to shore. Two fathers jumped in to attempt to save them, but were unable to fight the strong waves. One boy was able to swim to a jetty. The two others were noticed by a skilled surfer who was on the beach at the time who quickly swam out into the waves and was successful in returning the two other boys to the beach safely. It was one of several such close calls on the Jersey shore on the first day of Chol haMoed that saw many Lakewood residents head to beaches and boardwalks. The next day, authorities placed signs warning against swimming at several beach fronts.

After the completion of Yom Tov, the boys’ families held a seudos hodaah at which the surfer was publicly thanked for his integral role in the rescue.

Minhag in some shukls to sell the first Aliya of shabbos Breishis
A story in which the Maharik relates that in his time (fifteenth century), the custom in many shuls in France and Germany was to auction off the first aliyah in Bereishit. Large sums of money would thus be raised, serving to honor the Torah as well as to fund many communal needs. If a non-Kohen bought it, Kohanim would leave the shul. One time, a Kohen refused to leave and demanded to be given the aliyah. The Maharik ruled that the custom was acceptable, and the obstinate Kohen could be ignored (c.f. Beit Yosef, OC 135; Peri Chadash 135:3; MA 135:7).

Menendez vs. Hugin is a Senate race to watch

NJ 12- A United States Senate seat is up for grabs in New Jersey for midterm elections and political experts say that it is a race to watch.

A recent poll found a near dead heat between Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez and his Republican challenger Bob Hugin. The Stockton University poll found that Menendez leads by just two percentage points. But other polls found some different numbers. “I think it’s definitely a race to watch and I think it’s a race both sides should be concerned about and not call as a given at this point in time,” says Rutgers Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling director Ashley Koning.

Playgroup Registration Begins for next year

The sukka is still up and standing, but if you did not call on isru chag you may not have a slot in Playgroup for your 2 year old in 11 months from now.
Parents must apply for their 2 year old child 10- 11 months in advance or they will miss the self imposed deadline. Mrs. Ziva Krieger a'h tried putting an end to this madness and not letting registration commence before T Bshvat. It worked for a while  but not everyone was on board and once a few playgroups start taking privately, others follow and break the agreed upon start time.

The culture of grabbing first only creates a artificial hysteria where parents and even morahs are forced to open registration early because they are scared of loosing out if they wait a few more months. Its not fair for the parents and for the children. So much can change in 5-6 months a child may be held back they may need special services among other factors. We created a panic that only serves the "oischappers" that always look to beat everyone to it, causing a ripple effect that no one gains from. In previous years attempts were made to hold off registration until Tu bshvat but not everyone was on board and once a few playgroups start taking privately, others follow and break the agreed upon start time.

A Rainy Sukkos Did Not Dampen Simchas Yom Tov in Lakewood

The weather forecast could not get it more wrong, There is a reason they are refereed to as נביאי שקר. They predicted rain but said it would be clear for the first night of Yom Tov with a 3 hour window during the seuda time. Instead it rained almost straight.

As people came home from shul the question was how long to wait before starting the meal. Do you hold out to chatzos hoping the weather will let up? what about the kids how late can they stay up?  Can you make a bracha of leishev ba’sukka in this weather?
Some   Rabbonim announced in shul not to wait more than an hour, others held out longer for a small break in the weather enough to make kiddush hamotzie and  start the meal. The scene repeated itself over the first few days of sukkos making it impossible to sleep in the succa the first few nights.

Instead of putting a damper on the yom tov people responded by looking for any opportunity to be mekayem the mitzva of yeshivas sukkah between the raindrops. It showed a chavivas hamitzva. Chazal say its a סימן קללה if it rains on sukkos some say it is only referring to the first night and only applies to Eretz Yisrael. The piskei Teshuva brings down from the bikurei yaakov that according to the rama that one can eat in the rain on the first night it is not considered a סימן קללה, to the contrary one gets more schar fr it.

4.3 Cents Gas Tax Increase, Other Taxes go Up in NJ

There is  more pain at the pump as of  Monday October 1, 2018 in New Jersey. Taxes on gasoline sold in New Jersey  rose 4.3 cents per gallon on Monday, a hike triggered by a slowdown in how much gas is bought in NJ. After this latest increase, New Jersey's will be 41.4 cents per gallon. New York is at 45.76 cents per gallon. The increase was met with anger from taxpayers still reeling from the 23-cent-per-gallon increase in 2016. But tax collections have fallen short the past two years, precipitating the Murphy administration's announcement last month that it was raising the tax again according to NJ.com

And that's not all. A few other taxes took affect. E-Cigarettes There is now a tax on the juice. It's a 10 cent per milliliter tax on nicotine liquid for vapers. The state will now also tax all online retailers not only Amazon. Air BNB rentals will also be taxed.

UHC of NJ- New guidelines take effect -Pre authorization Needed for OT PT services

United healthcare of NJ issued new policy guidelines requiring referrals for therapy services even for those who are currently in middle of therapy. Additionally the company has required the referral process to go through their own appointed doctors which has caused many local therapists to lose clients. As a result it is effecting many peoples parnasah.

Statement from UHC:

Notice of Prior Authorization Policy Change for Speech Therapy Services Effective Oct 1, 2018, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of New Jersey will require prior authorization for all speech therapy services. We’re implementing this change as part of our commitment toward the Triple Aim of improving health care services, health outcomes and overall cost of care. These requirements will apply whether a member is new to therapy or currently receiving therapy. As with all notification/prior authorization requirements, if we don’t receive a prior authorization before therapy is provided, it will result in a claim denial.
