Lakewood Roshei Yeshiva Reinstate Takana not to Open schools until all girls are Placed

With a few days before girls High schools open and 10 girls still left without a school, the Lakewood Roshei yeshiva have instructed all girls high schools not to open the 9th grade classes before all girl are accepted and have were to go. This year there has been much publicity about this issue and the decision has been made to take a tougher approach in settling it before school begins. A few years ago there were 9 girls who were out of school and got accepted a few weeks before chanuka. This time around they are hopeful that it will all be resolved before the first day of school.

NJ Gas Tax will rise 4.3 cents a Gallon this Fall

New Jersey's gas will rise another 4.3 cents per gallon on Oct. 1, Gov. Phil Murphy's administration announced Thursday. This latest hike comes just two years after motorists were stung with a 23-cent-per gallon increase. It previously was unchanged since 1988.
The 4.3-cent increase brings the total state taxes to 41.4 cents on each gallon of motor fuels pumped in New Jersey, and 48.4 cents on each gallon of diesel. (NJ.com)

Move Over Forward and Haaretz We have YWN

Want to know the latest news and shmutz about  frum Yidden? want to see anything bad  that a Frum or Charedi person did? want to see Chareidim and frum people painted in the worst possible way look no further than Yeshiva world news.  Screaming headlines showing when a Frum Jew commits a crime or does something not in line with the editors viewpoint. Articles translated from Hebrew websites with no thought or sensitivity to klal yisrael.  When tragedies struck over the summer bein Hazmanim they made sure to point out how frum Jews are at fault by not preparing properly for outings ,swimming at beaches etc.. Its no wonder many upstanding mainstream Frum Jews do not frequent these sites at all.

Yesterday there were some  viral videos going around social media about a ugly fight at a yeshiva R"L. It served no purpose in publicizing it besides for clicks and hits. It would have been enough to report what the Rosh hayeshiva said about it but of course now they were able to show it to the world.

Here are some recent headlines that would make you think you were reading a Charedi hating paper.

Jackson Children Receive Bus Passes, Challenges Loom

Jackson school district sent out bus passes for Children who will attend private schools at it will be cheaper to bus them into Lakewood with district busing instead of giving parents the Aid in Lieu voucher.

Initially this seemed like a good plan, saving money and a convenience for parents.

But severe challenges remain first of all, the district will be going according to the Public school calendar which has many more off days than the private schools.
According to NJ state law, N.J.S.A. 18A:39-1  mandated busing must be provided Transportation or AIL shall be provided to eligible nonpublic school students Monday through Friday between September l and June 30 when the nonpublic school is in session. The only exceptions are for safety reasons.

In some cases  bus stops are consolidated and parents will have to drive their children to the bus stop which is over a mile and a half away. and some Girls will be riding on a boys bus  with early pick up times almost 2 hours before school starts.
Officials said there will be lots of ironing out, indeed.
 Happy back to school day.

Askanim Dupe children into a Trip

Submitted.
The last thing a parent wants is to see someone take advantage of their child and use them for an agenda. More so if the kid is in camp and for first activity they have to sit through a 2 hour court case. That is what happened last week when parents saw  pictures posted on the Lakewood Scoop of their children sitting in a courtroom at a hearing in Trenton. Parents were furious and rightfully so. The camp too was fooled and duped by askanim who offered them a trip to Trenton to take a tour of the state house.

They were not told that the plan was to use them as a backdrop for a photo op by having them sit through a lawsuit hearing. It was good optics to show 150 boys from the non public sector as the Lakewood BOE tried to join in on a lawsuit to fix the funding Formula for Lakewood. The Vaad too issued statements on the Lakewood scoop in support of the lawsuit.

But not when the kids the camp and the parents were not told about what the mission was really about.  They took advantage of hard working people who tried giving the kids a good time.
Just another day of how things go on.

Yaffed Plans to Bring Campaign to Lakewood and New Jersey

Yaffed, the organization that is making trouble for Yeshivas and private schools in New York is setting its sight on Lakewood and other private schools and  Yeshivos in New Jersey. They want the state to regulate the secular education curriculum taught in private schools. Most yeshivas in Lakewood are already accredited with the state but they have an agenda and ax to grind with the Orthodox community. In an interview with APP editorial board they asked about Lakewood.

Will moster be bringing his campaign to Lakewood? Yes, he says. He has already had contact with Orthodox and non-Orthodox residents alike. But for now, he wants to focus on New York. Last week, city education officials say their investigation into whether Hasidic schools were complying with the state’s “substantially equivalent” standard for non-public schools was being hindered by the refusal of some schools to allow investigators to enter the schools or to provide more than a basic outline of the curriculum. Moster believes he eventually will prevail. And when he does, he will turn his attention to New Jersey. Gov. Phil Murphy and the Legislature should be prepared. State standards

Home Invasion Robbery Injures Elderly Couple in Lakewood

Lakewood Police are looking into who may have broken into an Eagle Ridge Circle home and assaulted a man and woman there early Wednesday morning. Police officers found an injured man in the garage of the home and an injured woman inside the house, Staffordsmith said.  The suspect - or suspects - "is believed to have fled prior to police arrival," Staffordsmith said. Do As I Say Not As I Do

There is an AD today displayed on the Digital Billboard at Rt 9 in Lakewood  promoting a networking event hosted by the LCSC  paid for by UEZ tax dollars. The LCSC, was founded by the Lakewood Vaad some 18 years ago.
The Roshei yeshiva recently wrote a letter about the spiritual danger these Digital Billboards are causing to the Lakewood Kehilla and its children. They ask everyone who can, to remove this Michshol from our midst, as it was done without the consent and will of the Lakewood Tzibbur

In a few weeks after Sukkos the Vaad will issue its list of candidates to vote for in the general elections November 6, 2018. To get the olam to the polls, they put out a letter from the Roshei yeshiva to support their cause and expect everyone to follow Daas Torah.

When its good for them they use the Signatures, but when its good for the gelt the signatures are ignored.

BOE to ask Lakewood Township for a $1.2 Million Grant

Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles confirmed to the Lakewood shopper that the Lakewood school district requested a 1.2 million grant from the township. The mayor said that it was to be discussed at the Township meeting of August 16th. The money would go to tutoring programs and self contained classrooms. The township has recently gave millions of tax money for courtesy busing, sports programs. On the agenda of the BOE meeting for tomorrow Aug, 29 there is a resolution  that the Lakewood Board of Education authorizes the Superintendent of Schools to request Emergency Aid in the amount of $1,566,821 to equal the amount of reduced state aid for the 2018-2019 school year and.
No mention in the resolution who the request will be made to. The state already gave Lakewood a $28 million loan for the deficit.

Tight Senate Race in NJ, Hugin closing the Gap

CBS- For months, Republican Senate candidate Bob Hugin has assailed Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez in TV ads, calling the two-term incumbent corrupt because of now-dismissed federal corruption charges, whittling down the incumbent's double-digit lead in the polls to single digits only a six point edge.

Now, with less than three months until voters go to the polls in Democratic-leaning New Jersey, where the Senate race is at the top of the ticket, Menendez is unleashing his own TV advertising fusillade, with two new 30-second spots this week criticizing the wealthy former pharmaceutical executive as greedy.

Article: Busing costs Rise in Lakewood's bordering towns, but a savings for the Districts

A fair and balanced article on NJ.com details and explains NJ Law and how towns are saving money even though they are paying more for busing children to private schools

NJ. com As Orthodox Jews move in, taxpayers in these N.J. school districts are spending more than $1M on buses However, the $1,000 stipends for busing is far less than it would cost the district if all 850 students chose to enroll in the local public schools. Last year, Toms River Regional spent $16,659 per student to educate children in its public schools, according to state statistics.

Now, as more Orthodox Jewish families flock to Ocean and Monmouth counties, the busing issue is spreading to other municipalities.  Toms River Regional, Brick, Jackson and Howell are among the school districts that have seen their busing costs climb as more Orthodox Jewish families move into the area and request district-funded busing to send their children to the more than 100 private religious schools in neighboring Lakewood. New Jersey law requires that taxpayers cover the cost of transporting students to schools -- including private, religious schools – if the education institutions are more than two miles from the child’s home. Last year, Toms River Regional, Brick, Jackson and Howell combined spent more than $1 million on busing students to private schools, according to their budgets. That number is expected to rise dramatically as the new school year begins.

Why are taxpayers paying to send kids to private schools?
Under New Jersey’s law, school districts that provide busing to their own students must also pay to bus kids to private schools—under certain conditions.

Give the Girls of Ateres Esther their School
When my friend's daughter overheard her parents saying HER school may close its doors, she broke down. Parents are losing sleep at night, unsure what will be with their daughter's education.

It is one week before school starts and the parents of Ateres Esther need to know if there will be a school for their daughters (there are approximately 90 girls enrolled in its Primary through 5th Grade). I am one of those parents. The only thing keeping the school from opening is its lack of funding. We carefully chose this school - where all the girls feel cared for. All the parents are very

President Trump Deports a Nazi, Silence From Frum Jewish Organizations

A Nazi living in the United States in Queens, NY was deported back to Germany by orders of US President Donald Trump. You would expect the Jewish organizations to issue statements thanking the president for taking action and bringing justice but no statements were issued.
Actually it was Assemblyman Dov Hikind a orthodox Jew a Democrat from NY who publicly thanked the president. The president acknowledged it in a tweet see below

Agudath Israel was quick to criticize the president for charlottsville and the separating families policy but now not a peep.  Orthodox union.. Nada zilch. You wonder why? Are they scared to show favoritism to a president who is under attack by the left media?  they issued statements on issues less significant why the silence now? what happened to Hakoras Hatov we often hear about to support politicians that go out of their way to help the Jewish community? why did the Lakewood Vaad not issue a statement after all they too criticized the president on charlottsville but always preach Hakoras hatov.

Tidbits for this weeks Maftir and Haftorah

Have Kavana for Zechiras Amalek
This week the maftir  Parshas Ki Seitzei is about Zechiras Amalek what we read yearly on Parshas Zachor. The mitzva is to remember about it once a year. Since  this coming year is a leap year it will be 13 months from last Shabbos zachor to the coming parshas Zachor. The Chasam Sofer explains that the annual reading suffices. The reason for this is that human nature of forgetting after a year does not depend solely on the elapsed time, but even on the passage of the seasonal events that pass us by yearly.
Nevertheless, The Maharam Schick (Mitzvos, no. 604) writes that the Chasam Sofer himself  ordered his disciples on leap years to have intention to fulfill the mitzvah of remembering Amalek with the torah reading of Ki Teitzei. This ensures that a twelve-month period will not elapse without a reading of the chapter.

As for the Haftorah we will read 2 of them first רני עקרה which is the 5th Nechama followed by  עניה סוערה. Since we skipped  עניה סוערה it on shabos Rosh Chodesh Elul we make up for it this week. Its important to not skip any of the seven haftoras of Nechama.

The Shaitel free Issues are Out

You may or may not have noticed but as of this week some Lakewood newspaper and magazine publications will no longer run ads that feature pictures of shaitels wigs or hair locks.  A letter was sent to their advertisers notifying them about the new policy rules claiming they were complying to the requests of leading Lakewood poskim  no names or letters from the poskim were provided. Not all papers were on board with this new takana.

Up to that point there was never an issue about pictures of shaitels and wigs in ads in Lakewood media, prompting people to question the sudden change. Is it based on halacha or a business decision to change a status quo giving in to a chumra that is not widely accepted. Ironically, no guidelines or rules were issued as far as the lifestyle of high end gashmiyus featured weekly.
There was some push back with memes about the change in standards.

Gov Murphy said to Veto Plastic Bag fee paving the way to an outright Ban on Bags

There won't be a 5-cent tax on plastic and paper shopping bags after Gov. Phil Murphy takes his veto pen to the legislation, paving the way for an outright ban of plastic bags and straws. A spokeswoman for Murphy's office said the governor was expected to veto the bill in the coming days.
Although the law was aimed at reducing plastic waste, environmental groups opposed the law because it did not go far enough. Several counties and municipalities already have moved to ban

Toms River budgets $850k to transport students to Private Schools

Toms River school district budgeted up to 850k for Aid in Lieu payments to bus students to private schools for this year. APP reports most of the children will be attending private schools in Lakewood. State law requires school districts to transport students to the school they attend, including private schools.

These children''s parents are paying full property taxes yet not sending them to public school which is a huge savings to the township, all they ask for is the mandated  busing required by state law.
Naturally, the reaction an Facebook was swift drawing over 100 comments  with some blaming the orthodox community.

Four years ago our years ago, the district paid $143,000 paid in lieu payments to parents of about 150 children who attended private schools in Lakewood. Jackson township announced it will transport students to Lakewood instead of paying out the stipends since its the cheaper option. TR officials say they would consider the same but not ready for it right now see more at APP

Pushing Growth, while telling People not to Move

You reap what you sow. Vaad members have been pushing growth welcoming everyone to move to Lakewood  they make statements how nice it is that people from other Jewish communities are relocating to Lakewood and use that as a sign to show, that despite the high taxes and traffic issues Lakewood is still a desirable place. Getting people to move is the easy part  but when the infrastructure can not handle the growth it creates serious problems.

When people  take advantage of the affordable housing  and move in they are faced with challenges  the biggest one is that of getting their children into school. You would think the pro growth vaad would be out there to help but it seems otherwise and quite hypocritical.
A Phone call from an anonymous Vaad member was  posted on line. In the conversation a father who had a hard time getting kids into school is criticized for  moving to Lakewood and told to go back where he came from.  Is that called inviting and welcoming?

This person was trying to help 150 girls in a school that was about to close down many did not agree with the public approach that was taken, but after the fact  its hypocritical to tell them you should not have moved here.

In the final days of the campaign, we have launched a bonus round with the fundraising goal of an additional $25,000. These funds will be allocated for equipping roughly 10 additional members in the Toms River and Jackson communities so that we can continue to meet the ever-growing demands of these rapidly expanding areas.

With Lakewood becoming one of the fastest growing communities, its chinuch infrastructure isn't capable of absorbing the influx of children. Gedolim and balie batim got together to establish a new cheder for heimish and chassidish kids: Toras Yisroel
The influx of children is great and there is no time to start a school, opening one grade at a time. Toras Yisroel needs to open for all grades, nursery through 9th, in one year! No parent can compromise for their children with an underdeveloped curriculum, a weak staff or a small building, and Toras Yisroel has hired the best melamdim and educators, and is conducting $150,000 worth of construction to make the building big, spacious and comfortable for all talmidim

Rechnitz to The Rescue!

MATZAV.COM  First Report: The news spread far and wide.

Details are still being ironed out, but Shlomo Yehuda has committed himself to providing the funding to ensure that Ateres Tziporah will open for the 2018 school year in a timely fashion. He will meet with board members of the school and others to ensure that going forward, the school will be able to operate on a firm financial footing, so that it can continue to educate its precious young charges b’derech Yisroel saba.

With the school year just days away, an outstanding mosad for chinuch habanos in Lakewood, NJ, would be forced to close its doors because of financial issues.

Ateres Tzipora, a school with an enrollment of 180 girls in primary through eighth grade, would shutter its doors, leaving these girls and their families with nowhere to turn.

Announcing: Chaveirim of Toms River

As Towns around Lakewood grow they are setting up their own organizations and social services. They don't necessarily want to rely on Lakewood's existing organizations both for practical  and political reasons. The local residents have formed connections with local politicians and don't want to be dictated by others who don't live in their town.

Lawsuit can Fix Funding Formula for the Lakewood School District

Update by APP:  Judge did not issue any ruling today The case will continue.

A Judge will hear a case today brought by Lakewood attorney Arthur Lang of Lakewoodlaw.
The BOE  did not help him until this week.

APP reports Lang, a lawyer, longtime Lakewood resident, and a teacher since 2003, will argue the state commissioner of education should take action to fix a funding formula that doesn't account for the township's massive number of private school students when it distributes state aid. If Lang, 56, is successful, his effort could bring a remedy to a school district that each year accumulates debt. The Lakewood BOE did not join or support the lawsuit when it was filed in 2014. Last week On Thursday  BOE attorney asked to join in on the law suit.
The argument is simple.

In Lakewood, five times as many children attend private schools mostly Orthodox Jewish schools as public ones. The state education funding formula distributes money to Lakewood based on public enrollment of about 6,000, but requires the public school district to pay for costs for about 32,000 private school students in Lakewood. "It is simply wrong that the Department of Education funding formula ignores the existence of over 84 percent of the children of Lakewood when calculating adequate funding for Lakewood" read more at APP.com

Lakewood Vaad Concerned about Those Who Scam the Lakewood Community

A Rare notice and robo call from the Lakewood VAAD not during Election season about a IRS Phone scam targeting the Lakewood community. It is pretty obvious from the phone call that its a scam but unfortunately people always fall victim. The Lakewood Police Dept  issued a tweet on Thursday" To Be cautious of a widespread IRS phone scam that is targeting Lakewood residents Do not give them your info. Hang up immediately."
Its nice to see the VAAD is  looking out for those who try to take advantage and scam Lakewood residents perhaps they should do the same with the local governing body.

Help Stop Ateres Tzipora from Closing its Doors!

A message from Yosef Shidler             DONATE HERE

It’s hard to believe that just two weeks ago, my wife and I thought that we could relax and that our
problems were behind us after we finally received a long-awaited acceptance letter telling us that our daughter had been accepted into Ateres Tzipora, a wonderful school in Lakewood. It’s even more difficult to imagine that here I am, once again putting pen to paper (or more accurately, fingers to the keyboard) to write about another problem that is threatening to turn our lives upside down.

In short, with the start of the school year just days away, Ateres Tzipora will be forced to close its doors because of financial issues, unless $100,000 can be raised within the next week. This problem doesn’t just affect my daughter. Ateres Tzipora has an enrollment of 150 girls in kindergarten through eighth grade, many of whom were students at a different school that closed down for financial reasons just weeks ago.

Committee Approves Land Swap ordnance 4-0 Pretend to care about Open Space

The Lakewood township committee voted to approve a Land swap ordnance tonight at the meeting by a vote of 4-0. Committeeman Issac Akerman was not present. There was no discussion at all about the alleged corruption involved with this land swap. Committeeman Meir  Lichtenstein pretended to care about a potential open space issue and played dumb asking the township manager if the lot was on the list of properties prepared to be given by the township to the DEP for preserved land around waterways. (Just an hour before in the workshop meeting the officials acknowledged that they don't double check land swap parcels against the DEP list). No other issues were discussed.

One resident raised some concerns about open space and questioned how it can be approved. Lichtenstein insisted that the township is eager for this land swap because residents of Hearthstone neighborhood are desperate for a park that the town plans to build were they are receiving the other parcel. (Ray Coles together with the other committeemen clearly stated that they can have a beautiful park without this lot)

During the public comments a resident brought up an interesting question about the data mapping service contractor hired by the town for Lakewood Police. The addresses listed on the website and the checks from the township do not exist anymore. She questioned  how can we rely on its mapping services if they cant be accurate about their own address. Additionally she asked how do they get paid if there is no address where to send the checks since the ones on the checks are vacant properties.

60 Girls Still Not In High school for this coming year

Girls High Schools in Lakewood  are starting in less than 2 weeks but for 60 girls and their parents once again they sit home awaiting their fate as askanim school administrators and roshei mosdos get together to take in the final "leftover"  batch. Those who have been following the tremendous growth of the Lakewood community are aware of how difficult the school acceptance process is, Particularly for girls’ high schools, where there is not enough space. This year there is a new high school opening for the coming year Aderes Bais Yaakov, headed by Rav Bulman under the leadership of the Roshei yeshiva. Rebbetzin Drillman will be the menaheles. Supposedly, another school may open as well. Hopefully this will all be settled shortly so the bnos yisrael can walk around proudly and not hide their face in shame when their friends ask them about which school they will be going to..

Claim: A Land Swap Deal That will cost Lakewood Taxpayers While a Committeeman Can Profit off it

In less than 48 hours there is an ordnance up for second reading a property is being transferred to a corporation owned by a business associate and partner of  A Lakewood Committeeman. Swapping a lower valued property for a higher valued one that can be flipped for a profit, according to reports in two websites

Lakewood Township Committee giving away very valuable commercially-zoned land  for bupkes at below market Value  swapping it  at its assessed value which is much lower  than if it would be at its appraised value or sold on the open market. By exchanging public land for private land based on the properties’ assessed values,  they can flip their new acquisition for a profit at the appraised value.

"Lobbyist to Swap for Preservation Property at Costco-Brick Border"

Investigative Report HERE on NJ News and Views

More from Jleaks.com - This little worthless parcel, which you cant do anything with (and the township professionals admitted that we don’t even need), for prime real estate right off of Route 70 between Costco and Home Depot (Block 1264 Lot 1). This parcel of land is zoned for commercial use.  Prime prime real estate.  The Township also owns several contiguous parcels (totaling a few acres) in that area and as soon as he gets control of one of the parcels, he can go ahead and conduct a private sale via his friends on the committee for the adjacent parcels. At that point he can turn around and sell the whole shebang for millions.

What Keeps Lakewood's Downtown and town from Thriving and Increased Traffic

Submitted by HH
We had the opportunity to bring in many stores that would have been able to revitalize our downtown and keep it from becoming a location of storefronts for drug dealers that need to launder their cash and other illegal activities. Unfortunately our own committeemen were too invested in building "convenient" strip malls and attracting some stores away from the area that quite frankly would have benefited from a more visible downtown setting. Small changes and a continuation of parking lots on the east side of Clifton, similar to what we have on the west side, could have made the downtown driver friendly and a walkable shopping experience. Perhaps not for daily needs such as groceries ,but for dining and specialty shopping. Small eateries open until late would have helped the area as well. Of course we would not promote bars and outdoor cafes to fill Clifton ave.
The downtown is the face of Lakewood. We are judged by how it looks. When we see million dollar homes and billboards for all types of fancy lifestyle stores , and our downtown remains a crime ridden slum, it does not reflect nicely on our community.

NEW YORK - Hundreds gathered Thursday morning to mourn the petirah of Rebbetzin Sheila (Chava Sarah) Feinstein, a”h, the wife of, ybl”c, Harav Reuven Feinstein, shlita, who was niftar on Wednesday night, 28 Menachem Av. She had been hospitalized for the past two weeks following serious injuries suffered in an automobile accident. The Rebbetzin was in her late 70s.

At the levayah, held at the Yeshivah of Staten Island, Rav Reuven spoke of his late Rebbetzin’s great dedication in her essential role in enabling his own growth and decades of harbotzas haTorah.
“She supported me … she was mechazek me and took care of the whole olam hazeh part of my life,” he said.

With a commanding and regal presence, joined with exceptional intelligence and wit, Rebbetzin Feinstein’s dynamic personality propelled her to be one of the pillars upon which her husband’s yeshivah stood, and to be among the most trusted and loyal assistants to her revered father-in-law, Harav Moshe Feinstein, zt”l. At the same, she was a highly respected educator for many years in New York City’s Public School system and later in several mosdos haTorah.

Committeeman Mocks Resident "I Don't Wear a Sign on my back that says Kick Me"

An email message to a township committeeman circulating on social media(probably through OPRA request) from a Lakewood resident upset about Traffic. In the email the resident called a few times and was ignored. He was upset about the daily traffic, what should be a 6-7 minute commute now takes over 20 minutes. The assistant tells the committeeman that a very upset resident would like to talk to him.  A follow up email says that the resident called again and is still very upset he never called him. The response from the committeeman  "I'm not returning his call,I don't wear a sign on my back that says kick me".

Residents Upset about NJ state Busing Law?

Last year  Jackson school district provided busing for  62 private school students, consisting largely of Donovan Catholic students  and other private school students as mandated by law, there was no outrage or nasty Facebook posts.
APP reports about Jackson residents "upset they had to pay for students attending private school out of town." In reference to the BOE  plan to bus students to Lakewood private schools.
No mention at all that this is mandated by NJ state law to provide transportation to all students who live 2 miles from their school. This is not courtesy busing at all, the parents of these kids are paying property taxes yet not even using the public school system.
More ignorance without checking the facts.
