Giyus Law passes First Reading with help of Lapid

The Law to draft yeshiva Boys to the Israeli army passed in the knesset after the Yesh Atid party headed by Yair Lapid voted for it from the opposition.  The bill passed with 63 in support and 39 against. The  Frum Knesset members were able to vote against it knowing that it would have passed anyway with out their support. In the event that Lapid would have voted against it they would have helped it pass by abstaining and they also made a deal with the Arab mk's to abstain as well to ensure its passing. They were able to save face by publicly decrying the bill while at the same time protecting the govt by helping it pass.

The bill will now need to two  more readings to become law.  Health Minister MK Yaakov Litzman  of the Agudah faction said “If the enlistment law passes three readings, we will quit the coalition. Despite his threat, analysts say Litzman will seek a extension to the law from the Supreme court that will buy him time until the next election when they can negotiate a better deal by joining the next government. On the other hand UTJ and Shas will insist on minor changes by tweaking the current bill and are hoping to pass it at the final reading.

  3. MK's from Degel Hatorah and Shas initially abstained. They changed their position and voted against after Yesh Atid voted for it.
    It passed 63-39.

    1. yes they changed there position when they already chopped that it will pass mimah nafshuch, so they had no reason not to object. the leitzunos is outrages, because after they suddenly changed their mind, gafne gets up to give a drasha how they are attacking the torah etc. without noting that earlier he didn't vote against it.

even yediot achronot are making fun of this on the front page

  4. The yediot achronot called out the charedi MK's for their hypocrisy.
A MK from Meretz said that a high ranking frum knesset member asked him to vote for the Giyus bill

  5. "ידיעות": אחד מהח”כים בקואליציה סיפר כי ח"כ משה גפני פנה אליו באופן אישי ווידא שיצביע בעד החוק. ח”כים נוספים העידו כי מיכאל מלכיאל מש”ס פנה ואמר “אנחנו חייבים שהחוק הזה יעבור”.

  11. HaGaon HaRav David Yosef Shlita, spoke out ahead of the Knesset’s first vote on the new draft law on Monday morning, 19 Tammuz, hours before the Knesset would vote on the law...
Rav Yosef criticized rabbonim against the draft law, albeit hinting to this and not expressing his criticism outright regarding the specific vote. He stated that in order for rabbonim to rule in public matters, they must first read the material entirely and become familiar with it.
The rav stated, “Some of the rabbonim speak one way regarding the draft law while others speak another way. Who among those ruling this way or that way have heard all the sides? One who has heard all of the sides can explain and say the law is a good one or not but one who has not heard all the sides does not have the possibility to rule in such a crucial question. Such persons have to sit solemnly and listen to all sides”.
