Bein Hazmanim at the Beach

Lakewood is close proximity to the Jersey shore but for obvious tznius reasons most beaches are not accessible.  However there are some spots one can go to during off peak hours usually on the weekdays or in the evenings.
-Island beach state park - has usually just fishing during the week - exit 83 on the parkway. There is a fee to enter but you can find a private stretch. best to go midweek its full to capacity on weekends.

-Mantoloking, drive down Cederbridge all the way go over a bridge Take the road after the bridge to the end  you hit rt 35 Make a right at the light  the road runs along the beach. To the left there are small side streets you can park for the beach. or you can park on side streets to the right. After 5-6 pm you can enter without a pass.  (Be very careful to park very legally. They are looking for any excuse to give a ticket make sure to park with the driver side towards the road even on a dead end street)

-Sandy Hook gateway national recreation area. This park is 45 minutes from Lakewood free entrance on weekdays  lots of beaches and during the week you can find lots of empty secluded areas as you go further out. Take rt 36 to the end. Picnic areas available.

The Kosher Cheesburger now Available, kinda

The Impossible Burger is a vegetarian patty that has made waves for tasting and looking just like the real thing. It even “bleeds” just like a juicy burger thanks to heme, a protein that puts the hem- in hemoglobin. Impossible’s version is derived, it says, from the roots of soy plants.
The burger, is only available at restaurants, had been certified kosher by the OU. On Monday, it received another seal of approval from the FDA that it is safe to eat after answering questions about the genetically engineered substance used to produce plant-based heme.
JTA reports The Impossible Burger is served at Shelly’s Cafe in Teaneck, N.J. and has four variations of the burger on its menu — with Swiss, cheddar, cheese fondue and a no-cheese option.

The Orthodox Union, the largest kosher certifying agency in the United States, was “thrilled” to put its seal of approval on the Impossible Burger, said Rabbi Menachem Genack, CEO of the organization’s kosher division. Approving the burger took only two months because many of its ingredients already were certified kosher, said Rabbi Yitchok Gutterman, who oversaw the process.

Though the burger is 100 percent kosher, a cheeseburger could raise questions of appearances. A Jewish legal concept known  “marit ayin” (literally, “apperance to the eye”) bans certain otherwise

Dennis and Judi Apologize Will Return after 10 Day Suspension

NJ 101.5 — New Jersey 101.5 hosts Dennis Malloy and Judi Franco issued an apology today for comments made Wednesday regarding New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal on their popular, statewide radio show.

“We offer our sincerest apologies to Attorney General Gurbir Grewal as well as the Sikh and Asian communities for a series of insensitive comments we made on our show. For 21 years, the Dennis and Judi show has been unscripted and free form. We use humor and sarcasm to make a point and add color to the broadcast; in this instance, we were off the mark. It was a mistake we both deeply regret. We respect all cultures and beliefs and are deeply sorry for the pain caused to the Sikh community, our co-workers and our beloved listeners.”

Township Restripes Oak street adds Parking

LNN -  Following input from both commuters and residents along Oak Street, the Lakewood Township Committee arranged for the recently installed left turn lanes on Oak and Vine Street and at Albert Avenue to be re striped to restore some of the parking along Oak Street. NJ 101.5 Suspends Hosts Dennis & Judi for 'offensive comments'

NJ AG Gurbir Grewal tweeted in response that he’s the 61st attorney general of New Jersey“I’m a Sikh American. I have 3 daughters. And yesterday, I told them to turn off the radio.”

New Jersey 101.5  released a statement: "We are aware of the offensive comments made by Dennis and Judi during today’s broadcast," the station said Wednesday night. "We have taken immediate action and have taken them off the air until further notice. We are investigating the matter and will have further comment shortly."

After the Drama: Small Primary Class opening in Lakewood

By R' Yosef Shidler
After all the excitement and drama, we are working with a Morah local here in Lakewood that is ready to take on the task of opening a small primary class. She has experience in Discovery based learning and has an interest in seeing a school of that nature get off the ground. For now we are thinking very basic, in terms of getting a first year off the ground. We will be renting a basement location. The basic idea, is a warm very welcoming environment with a small class of under 10 girls.

An Attack on the Heart of the Community

A day after featuring an all out hate fest against the Lakewood community they were at it again this time "Kolell bashing" in a clever but subliminal way undermining and attacking the Kollel youngeleit of Lakewood.

It was posted innocently as a  question that was asked To Harav Avigdor Miller ztl. The comments were quick to the trigger hinting in every possible way against the lifestyle of Lakewood youngeleit who are moser nefesh for Torah.

A Town with thousands of ehrliche bnei Torah sacrificing themselves and giving up on materialism to serve Hashem, were publicly shamed, their lifestyle choice mocked and ridiculed. The Nashim Tzdkoniyos who who are equal partners supporting the husbands were also shamed and their lifestyle choice doubted. Shalom Bayis issues and other family problems were blamed on the kolell life as if no other segment of frum society has these issues.
These couples are the true heartbeat of Lakewood and they were again hung out to dry right after crying over the churban by the haters of Torah. While Most of the bnei hayeshiva don't go online we should still go out of our way to support them, uplift them and thank them.

The Chabad Lubavitch school That was Supposed to open in Lakewood

There was an attempt earlier this year to open a Lubavitch girls school in Lakewood. For some reason it did not materialize. Here is the report on the original Facebook post.

After a first official meeting with the shluchim in Lakewood area here is the plan as of now for next year.
For now, we will start with one class (Girls around age 5) one Morah - similar in style to a playgroup - then over the year, we will hire administor for the second year. We will likely be starting with a basement classroom. IY"H by year two, we will look to start for boys as well. This is a work in progress. We don't have every answer yet, and meetings are still ongoing.
A Mossad under Merkos L'inyonei Chinuch and a joint project of the Shluchim the Lakewood area. No, I am not personally running a school. It will be open to all

Sinas Chinom Rears its Ugly Head on Lakewood Tisha B'av Day 5778

As the Men in Lakewood were in shul Tisha B'Av morning saying Kinus sitting on the floor and crying over the churban, the frum news websites had something else on their agenda. No, it wasn't the all day non stop videos about the meaning of  tisha bav and the churban, it was actually an opportunity to spread hate lashon hora bashmutz and badmouth the Lakewood community. Ironically on the very that we call for an end of such practices.
The First piece came from VIN before chatzos. Nebach a 3 year old girl passed away R"L after drowning in swimming pool, the parents and the community are heartbroken and are making preparations for a levaya. Self righteous VIN couldn't just report it as is, the headline read "Drowning death of Jewish Jackson girl prompts call for greater pool safety". The parents did not even bury their child and VIN is already out blaming quoting from anonymous sources. If they were so concerned for Pool safety why did they not spread awareness for the last few weeks or all summer long? why now?Perhaps, because the agenda is  to paint Lakewood or frum yidden in a bad light and portray the community as not being safety conscious.

Than came the next one, also before chatzos Hayom at  approximately 11:00 am . The content was shared by the Jnetwork and  the frum news sites picked it up and posted a heart wrenching letter of a father's cry trying to get his daughter into a Lakewood school.  The topic of getting into Lakewood schools in a hot one and nothing new, it's passionate and something that brings out emotions and opinions across the board. As expected, the comment sections were quick to fill up with hate lashon hora blame and besmirching the Lakewood community as a whole all on tisha B'Av.  They argued that there is no better to stronger day to post about it and send a message of sinas chinom, than on Tisha b'Av itself.

Lets take a look at the circumstances, there are many kids who are still not accepted into Lakewood schools as of this very day for the coming year. Boys are not in high school, girls are not in high school and girls have no elementary school.  None of these concerned websites brought it up to the fore in recent weeks? Where was their concern for all those parents and children?

While the letter reflects the pain and Tzaar of parents trying to get their child in,  it also has some accusations and blame on others. To be fair It is only one side of the story there may or may not be another side but before everyone jumps in to comment, keep in mind that those people and schools who were approached may or may not have what to respond or simply can not publicly state their side of the story.

The articles screamed its been 2 years since Rechnitz gave is speech why can't i get my kid into school. As many have pointed out since then, Lakewood is experiencing a lack of space problem and the root cause is the growth with an infastructure that can not keep up. (As proof, many boys schools have opened up since and the problem of getting a primary kids into school has been minimized drastically in Lakewood).

So what was so important to post this letter today, Oh because it had a great story line it highlighted a Lakewood v Lubavitch narrative. That was enough to fuel a fire and boy did it light up. The COL website was lit up with venomous comments about how bad Lakewood is how its full of Hatred and brought out old deep seeded feelings about misnagdim v chasidim etc.  The Lakewood scoop website suddenly awoke and pretend to care so much to report on the school issue (on tisha B'av day before chatzos )while ignoring all the development and lack of infrastructure and never bringing up the issues of kids out of school. The comments on YWN were predictable and not surprising. To their Credit Matzav initially posted the letter but had it removed.

Some honest comments wrote that this phenomenon is not a Lakewood issue but eve goes in monsey  crown heights and other communities as well. from Chabad On line:
REb Yosef is fighting OUR battle. This has nothing to do with living in Lakewood. THIS IS A PROBLEM IN CROWN HEIGHTS TOO!! Please believe me when I tell you this. I am a teacher for over ten years in the community and children are lately not being accepted to one of our biggest mosdos because of money. When I called the other smaller school on behalf of this child, the dean was a mentch and said let the parent come and substitute or work out a payment schedule etc . The choice was between moving to a normal apartment that was not lead and mice infested or giving this stubborn person ''full" tuition. EVERY other year they did what they can , this was the first time they needed help after having a new addition to the family and other crisis.
But when there is an opportunity to bash Lakewood for whatever reason even to look relevant and drive traffic to your website all of a sudden everyone pretends to care as was evident by the hypocrisy  displayed today on the 9th of Av 5778 On one side videos and speeches about sinas chinom while spewing hate bigotry, and maligning an entire community on the other side.

N.J. Democrats plan to tax water next.

See video below- This is for those who use township water through the MUA. If you use a private company there is already a tax in place.
State Senator Bob Smith of Middlesex has proposed to put a tax on your tap water in New Jersey.
The plan is to add 10¢ for every 1,000 gallons of water your home uses. Smith which calls this a "user-fee" says it'll add $32 a year for the "average" water bill. Smith says the money is needed to fix a decaying water delivery infrastructure in New Jersey. See Video below

Sunset Road Closure done w/o Necessary permit?

Submitted
Traffic in Lakewood during the morning commute and afternoon this week was grid lock. Besides the camp drop off/pick up, Sunset Road was closed off for construction. This caused major delays and back ups through the Central, James, Prospect, Cross area. The closure started last week but it appears that it was done without the necessary permit from the county
The  permit was only approved Earlier this week.. Could they have waited until after tisha B'av when People are away on Summer vacation? Instead people sat in their cars for over an hour on a errand that should take no more than 10 minutes.
Who is calling the shots?

The good news is that there are many Starbucks locations that do not serve hot meat sandwiches. These are generally the Starbucks kiosks which can be defined as a Starbucks location, usually found in a mall, retail store, a bus or train station or airport, that does not sell hot sandwiches. The cRc is comfortable recommending any drink made from kosher ingredients (even though some others use ingredients that may not be kosher).
It is also worth noting that many items sold at Starbucks are dairy and chalav stam.

CRC-Over the years, Starbucks shops have evolved from simple coffee shops to stores that serve many kosher and non-kosher items, with the most serious non-kosher items being hot meat

NJ Cuts $1,566,821 in State aid to Lakewood schools, BOE Takes it from Loan Repayments

BOE Holding a Special meeting today in closed session
The State of NJ has notified the Lakewood school district  that state aid will be reduced for the coming year by $1,566,821. The school district can not increase taxes and must make cuts to its budget to make up for the shortfall. However on the BOE agenda for the upcoming meeting  it says  the district is in a deficit, there are no funds available and no where to cut.
The only option is to reduce appropriations for the 2018-2019 school year. The Board found funds available in the State Aid Loan Repayment line account that can be reduced in the amount of $1,566,821.  This will have no effect on staffing, programs or services.
This is no way a savings but only kicking the can down the road and this money will still have to be repayed.

APP: LPD crash unit under federal investigation

APP  reports "Lakewood Police Department's traffic crash investigation unit is under the microscope of federal authorities, a subpoena obtained by the Asbury Park Press shows. A federal grand jury subpoena dated in April sought all records related to deadly and serious injury crashes the Lakewood Police Department Traffic Safety Unit responded to, or "had any involvement with," since January 2014. The department was ordered to produce the records by May 15 and contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The reason for the federal investigation, or what sparked it, is not specified in the subpoena, and public officials have declined to comment on the investigation". read more at APP

Township Votes for R 7.5 Density Despite Split on Planning Board

The Lakewood Township committee voted for an ordnance that will allow R 7.5 zoning to replace an area that was approved for an educational campus by converting it to a lower density. Only three members were on hand as Miller and Lichtenstien were absent (they were absent the previous meeting too). Earlier this week the Planning board was split 4-4 on converting a planned educational campus to R7.5. Those voting against it said its spot zoning an example would be like putting a Wawa at 14th street and Hope Chapel. Township officials said that it is not considered a zone change based on the opinion of the attorney.
What this ordnance does is certain areas were approved for educational campus and with that they can build up to 28 units per acre with high rise buildings and not pay taxes. By allowing it to be converted  to R75 it technically reduces  the density and you get money for taxes.
Since the Educational campuses approvals were approved prior to the adoption of the master plan it is not regulated  to any conditions put forth by the master plan such as fixing infrastructure or widening the roadways. Officials did not say where these sites are.

Incompetence at the BOE?

Did Lakewood school district Officials just realize they have problems with the busing and  could save over $1 Million dollars You don’t have to pay 600k to know that there were major issues with the busing system.

This morning the Lakewood BOE had a public meeting regarding bus transportation. The district leaders acted surprised to hear the preliminary report about the district provided transportation for public schools. The board attorney said that they assumed everything was fine and it was all efficient, but Than found out that it was far from ok.

There is no excuse for not knowing what was going on and yet they shifted the blame by firing others. The LSTA that runs the private school  busing said 2 years ago that the software database for district maps were outdated from 2004 why did it continue to be used for the public schools when the LSTA brought it to their attention?

Could the district and board really not know that there were many empty buses recently purchased by the Lakewood school district sitting around while they were paying contracts to 3rd party vendors?

The board approved these purchases did they not know if it was needed?

The BOE signed a deal with the township committee to use the BOE buses as shuttle buses for route 9 during the day. Did they not look at the numbers? They obviously felt that there were empty buses available why was nothing done?

Live: Lakewood BOE discusses Transportation Issues

BOE Lawyer was questioned about his 600k salary he snapped back that its ignorance since he saved the district 600k in legal fees The video of the meeting was deleted.

Proper Attire at Simchas

Submitted.
Heard this line recently at a shalom Zachor. "What is the difference between a shalom Zachor and a Chasuna in Lakewood? at a shalom zachor we wear shabbos clothing."

Recently with the abundance and convenience of local wedding halls in Lakewood a chasuna has become like a vort were people just come and go not spending much time at the simcha.
As such, there is a feeling to not have to dress bakovodik with bigdei shabbos since "I'm only going in for a few minutes".
The balei simcha appreciate everyone who comes but shouldn't we also show them that we are rejoicing in their simcha and dressing appropriately? The fact that it is local and don't have to schlep should not lessen the importance or the enormity of the event.

Women would never go to a simcha not dressed properly despite the time it takes them to get ready.  Men can change in a few minutes.
Shouldn't we be more thoughtful and show respect that we are not just coming to say mazel tov and grab some food but that we are joining in the simcha and value it by dressing appropriately.

Charedi Media Bias and Fake Frum News

Sometimes you wonder what is the purpose of frum websites if they are  doing the same job as the secular press. When it came to covering news, the headline and stories that are posted have you think that you are reading Haaretz  or some other Charedi hating newspaper. If  someone is accused or does something wrong the headline makes sure to tell you his religious affiliation with a title "Charedi man convicted.. Charedi man did so and so etc...

The giyus story which was the biggest story dominating the Israeli news cycle as well as having a potential impact on Charedi Jewry, these websites who cater to the yeshiva world have been silent. It took a full 12 hours to first report it and than all they quote was a copy paste job from Ynet .  The editors were hoping for a headline that the  Frum Knesset member voted for the Giyus bill it's hard to admit that there are actually serious problems with Giyus after playing it down for 2 years.

Worse, the accompanying picture to the article is not one of yeshiva bochurim learning but subliminally shows a frum man inserted among soldiers trying to create more divisiveness.

On its Instagram page it states that "Thousands attended a Hafgona in Jerusalem against the new proposal for theIDF draft of Chareidim The Hafgona was led by Sephardic Rabbonim and took place at Shmuel Hanavi/Bar Ilan hafgana was called for by The Roshei yeshiva", but the videos and photos only show a street protest blocking a bus which took place after the actual atzeres. No mention at all that the organizers specifically told the crowd do disperse quietly and not engage in any provocations, but there is an agenda to paint certain factions in the worst possible light.  The clueless reader is deceived to think that he rabbonim organized the street protest and told everyone to block traffic.

Its interesting to note when the Peleg protests took place the media was on it as it happened showing every possible angle to paint them in a bad light but when the news of the giyus law broke with all the frum Knesset members voting against it, it was just to hard to post.

Giyus Law passes First Reading with help of Lapid

The Law to draft yeshiva Boys to the Israeli army passed in the knesset after the Yesh Atid party headed by Yair Lapid voted for it from the opposition.  The bill passed with 63 in support and 39 against. The  Frum Knesset members were able to vote against it knowing that it would have passed anyway with out their support. In the event that Lapid would have voted against it they would have helped it pass by abstaining and they also made a deal with the Arab mk's to abstain as well to ensure its passing. They were able to save face by publicly decrying the bill while at the same time protecting the govt by helping it pass.

The bill will now need to two  more readings to become law.  Health Minister MK Yaakov Litzman  of the Agudah faction said “If the enlistment law passes three readings, we will quit the coalition. Despite his threat, analysts say Litzman will seek a extension to the law from the Supreme court that will buy him time until the next election when they can negotiate a better deal by joining the next government. On the other hand UTJ and Shas will insist on minor changes by tweaking the current bill and are hoping to pass it at the final reading.
