Lakewood Publications- Abuse Awareness Ahead of Summer Camp

Ads printed in some publications and distributed elsewhere around Lakewood call on parents to speak to their children before sending them to camp. Its not about pool safety, dehydration, or other general safety concerns related to summer camp, rather its about the issue of abuse and molestation.
An info line was set up for parents to call and hear important messages about speaking to the children to be aware of inappropriate touching.
Lakewood Posek HaRav Yaakov Forscheimer shlita, Lakewood pediatrician Dr. Shanik, are among those who speak on the hotline on the importance of having the talk with your children.

  1. Not sure waht they are trying to make it as if there is some sort of cover up and Lakewood is new to this. In the press release on yeshiva world they wrote that over 1000 people came to the inaugural Amudim event in Lakewood. That is a flat out LIE they were maybe a few hundred and organizers were begging people to come during the event to make it look full. why do they have to be dishonest and create a falsity that everyone is backing them and fully supportive.

Before sending my 2 sons to camp for the first time I asked advice from somebody on how to speak to them about this uncomfortable subject. The person gave me great advice that made it much less uncomfortable. They told me to tell my sons that if anyone wants to take them to a private place and tell them they want to talk to them or show them something, they should insist that they tell them whatever they need to tell them publicly and not go to any private place with anybody even a counselor or adult. Just passing on a
Small tip that helped me talk to my kids.

  4. This was most likely triggered because many camps are now makng parents sign a paper that they will not sue them if something bad happens to thier child.

  5. I'm relieved that this is coming to light. Parents need to speak to their children from a very young age about appropriate touch/behavior and what to do in cases of physical, verbal or emotional abuse. I'm glad the community is no longer sticking their heads in the sand.
