Update on Family in Accident

The Van
An update on condition of the Lakewood family of seven that were struck by an 18-wheeler truck at 70 mph earlier this week.
The father Allon &  son Shlomo have both been released from the hospital.
Yosef Chaim had a true miracle happen.... he was supposed to have surgery on his broken hip and leg.   After much talk, the doctors decided to do it by hand.   They rescanned him after and said that it looked like he had never even been injured!
Yehuda, is conscious and breathing on his own.  Tests are still being done, and we should hopefully know more about how he’s doing later today.

To all that prayed,  thank you so much!!!   Hashem really listened!  The fact that anyone came out alive from that car is a miracle.  But all 7 family members??  That’s a true blessing from Hashem.

Reasonable Accommodation

Jackson Leaks - Much like for religious beliefs, special arrangements may need to be made to preserve the rights of those with handicaps. The protections provided by the Fair Housing Act require that a disabled person be allowed to make physical modifications to their home and exceptions to housing related policies as needed to “afford such person full enjoyment of the premises”:

The Lakewood Effect Spreads

THE Lakewood Effect Spreads
By Harold Herskowitz

For the last few years we have seen a large uptick in criticism towards our community. Neighboring towns such as Jackson , Tom's River and Howell have been fearful of the influx of Jewish people into their towns. Part of the reason is a fear of the unknown or perhaps a pinch of anti semitism. But many longtime residents point to the irrational and often irresponsible growth of Lakewood. They point out a total disregard for zoning and planning laws , a town that ignores slum houses with multiple families, and a committee that is in the hands of developers and special interests. They see the cost of such behavior. Higher taxes, unheard of traffic, safety issues and a general disregard to the quality of life for the residents in exchange for helping developers or in the case of our committee actual employers and partners. They are not blind to the corruption in our town. No matter how much Aaron Kotler and the VAAD attempt to make us look like "good neighbors", no matter how much they spend on Public relations or try to influence reporters with their version of the truth, the people arent fooled.

Until now this unfortunate image problem was limited to our immediate area. The residents of neighboring towns see the large sprawling developments and have to battle the local traffic in Lakewood just like we do. But now it seems that our reputation is carrying out further to parts of New Jersey that never even heard of us before.

One unfortunate case in point is the saga of The Chabad Of Gloucester county. Mullica Hill is 60 miles and an hour and a half away from Lakewood, yet it seems that our reputation for bad planning and overcrowding has reached the sleepy rural community in Southern New Jersey.

Lakewood Fires Busing Chief after draft report alleges mismanagement

The district spent Millions on purchasing its own fleet of school buses. Now a report  questions why the district still hired 3rd party companies if they can do their own busing. Th same buses that the BOE wants to lease to the township for Route 9 Shuttle buses

Lakewood owned enough school buses to cover its routes and questioned why the district still hired third-party companies to bus children on 67 routes.

APP  reports The Lakewood school board voted to fire its student transportation chief Wednesday just a week after receiving an unfinished report that said the schools may be overpaying for public school busing. The Board of Education hired Ross Haber study the district’s transportation operations. The review focuses on how about 5,500 public school children get to school, and whether it’s cheaper to do that with district-owned buses or use contractors.

Plastic Bags May Cost 5 Cents Tax in NJ

Soon, you might have to shell out 5 cents per plastic (or paper) bag on New Jersey shopping trips.

Last week, state lawmakers passed a measure requiring a 5 cents-per-single-use-bag fee for shoppers. The bill, which legislators hope will bring the state as much as $23 million, is poised to pass — pending Gov. Phil Murphy’s signature. If Murphy does sign the measure, it would go into effect on October 1st. Lawmakers say it will cut down on waste and provide funding for environmental cleanups. Per the bill’s language, stores would get 1 cent of the bag fee, while the other 4 cents would go toward a fund for lead abatement in schools and communities, as well as an environmental public-information program, per the Inquirer. People enrolled in food-assistance programs and those 65 and older would be exempt from paying the tax.

Paying Twice for Free shuttle Buses on Rt 9

Starting soon, Lakewood BOE buses will pick up passengers along Route 9.
Another example of using township resources at the expense of the taxpayers. The BOE and Township have signed an agreement to use the BOE buses during off hours as shuttle buses for the township to provide transportation up and down rt 9. According to a report in the Yated Neeman the BOE president called it a win win as it will provide a source of the revenue for the BOE. Guess who is paying for this "revenue".
Basically Lakewood Tax payers are paying double, first to pay for the BOE buses and than to pay the BOE from the Township coffers.
Why is the township paying for buses that were already paid for by the BOE?

WSJ: The Jersey Tax Spiral Continues

From the Wall Street Journal Editorial board
New Jersey’s Democrats are in a budget standoff between worse and worser, though it’s difficult to tell which proposal is which.

Governor Phil Murphy, who defeated the ghost of Chris Christie in last November’s election, is pushing for a new “millionaires tax,” which would bump the top rate on personal income to 10.75% from 8.97%. He also wants to add nearly half a percentage point to the sales tax, raising it to 7%. New Jersey already has the country’s highest property taxes.

Senate President Stephen Sweeney voted for a “millionaires tax” several times when he knew Mr. Christie would veto it. But now that state and local taxes can no longer be deducted on a federal return, Mr. Sweeney worries Mr. Murphy’s plan would send even more high-earning residents packing for Florida.

The Fast Day of Erev Shabbos Parshas Chukas ו׳ חקת

The fast Day of Erev Shabbos Parshas Chukas
By Rabbi Yehuda Spitz
‘Zos Chukas HaTorah’ There is no mention in the Gemara of the week of Parshas Chukas being one of tragedy, nor is it mentioned by the Rambam, nor Tur, nor Shulchan Aruch! Not even in the Siman where tragedies and proper days to fast are mentioned, Orach Chaim 580! In fact, most are wholly unfamiliar with anything specifically attributed to this week. Yet, the Magen Avraham, citing the Sefer HaTanya, tells of a terrible, albeit fascinating, historical tragedy. on Erev Shabbos Parshas Chukas. On that day, in the year 1242, 20 wagonloads (other versions state 24) filled with Gemaros and Talmudic literature, were burned in Paris.

TR Residents seek Zoning Change for Houses of worship

A resident of Toms River is asking the town to repeal a zoning requirement that 10 acres is needed to build a house of worship.
APP reports  North Dover resident Scott Gartner, an Orthodox Jew whose efforts to bring a new synagogue to town have been stymied by the zoning restrictions. "Our community is growing. We want to do it the right way. The government is forcing us to do it the wrong way."  The Paper reports Gartner said he and other members of the Orthodox Jewish community believe the zoning change was aimed at preventing the construction of Orthodox Jewish shuls .

He said any lawsuit would argue the restrictive zoning violates the federal Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act. He said he and his Orthodox Jewish neighbors are being forced to gather to pray in private homes. Gartner said that a shul, which would be built with "normal zoning of two to five acres for a 5,000-square-foot building," could serve 100 to 200 Orthodox Jewish families and would allow families who live within one to two miles to walk to the building on the Sabbath.

A Shmuess from a R"Y about the Billboards

From a shmuess given to Talmidim by a Rav and  R"Y in Lakewood this motzei shabbos.

The R"Y spoke to his Talmidim about current issues and discussed the Billboards and other advertisments in Lakewood both from a Gashmiyus angle and from Hashkafa angle of Golus.
. He called it a new Pirtzah in town among others that is changing the Tzurah of a yiddish shtut.
The gemorah in Chagiga  mentions the 3 instances when a person is compared to a malach and on the other hand like a Beheima our job is to be kovea which side we want to be on.  The siman of knowing where we stand is where we have a busha.  Publicizing advertisements of Food and related items is a lack of tznius and shiflus. It is not who we are and we can not be comfortable to show off and talk about it. This does not represent us as bnei Torah and unfortunately the fact that its comfortably done with no busha is in itself shiflus.

The rosh yeshiva than  mentioned a more serious problem and danger. There was a Hashkafa that yidden always had when living in golus and what  we must keep a low profile
This is not our place it is ארץ לא להם  We can not show force that we are comfortable and that we are

Kosher Phone Industry Threatened by Decline of 3G Networks

Hamodia- Over the past decade, thousands of Orthodox Jews have bucked worldwide trends and opted for more basic cellular phones in an effort to protect themselves from the ever-increasing dangers of modern technology. Recently, the “kosher phone” market is facing its latest in a quickly changing catalog of challenges as providers move to phase out 3G service, the network of choice for most in search of internet-free mobile devices.

While most who do not follow technological developments closely are unaware and most likely uninterested in the scientific and industry background behind the phenomenon, many people with 3G phones could not help but realize the effects.

Tips from Lakewood based Real Life Organizing follow on Instagram
Kids School Stuff  Decluttering:
We all know that kids artwork🖍, papers📝and old school books📚📓can accumulate really fast! Here are some tips to conquer the clutter monster:

1) Give each child a “junk box”. When it is full, it is time to get rid of stuff!
2) Go through it right away! Don’t wait! The clutter will be every where!!
3) Put the backpacks🎒in storage, if you plan to reuse them. Don’t leave them on their hooks or coat closet. It will just get in the way with the camp🧢🕶/swim gear.
4) Take photos 📸 of sentimental items like report cards and other projects and then discard (gulp😯)!

Agudath Israel Weighs in on Immigration Family Separation Policy

Agudath Israel of America expresses its deep concern and disappointment over the recently adopted policy of separating the members of families who have entered the United States illegally. It is a practice that has caused, and will continue to cause, profound suffering and pain to both parents and children.  We implore that the policy be immediately rescinded, and that affected families be reunited.

The problem of illegal immigration is a serious one, and we support reasonable efforts by the administration and legislature to effectively stem the flow of would-be immigrants who have not been accepted through the legal immigration system. But the United States, a shining beacon of freedom in the world, must always exhibit humanity and compassion in its laws and policies.  Seeking to enforce our statutes does not relieve us of this moral

Torah Links seeks Home for Fellowship program

Torah Links is looking to build a much needed school and home for its Lakewood fellowship program. The future site will be on Central Avenue next door to Chabad of  Lakewood.
Rabbi Gruman testified previously in front of the Planning board about the Lakewood fellowship program hosting undergraduate students with programs through the year  such as internship programs and religious programs. There will be a residential facility on the second floor the application allows the maximum of 75 beds. The neighborhood was chosen since they students have developed mentor ship with residents  of the area over the years. The pre med  students have been mentored by doctors who live in the area and this one building will help consolidate everything under one roof. Its important to have it surrounded by a neighborhood that supports it. Regarding Parking the plan has 53 parking spots, most students do not have their own car most of the students are transported by 2-3 shuttle vehicles. No outside functions will take place at the facility the environment will be distraction free to the students.

The application will continue to be heard this evening at the Planning board meeting.

APP: Report on the LSTA as it Nears its 3 year Trial Period looks into the LSTA the consortium that is in charge of transportation for private schools in
Lakewood managing a bus fleet that hauls 32,000 kids over 13,600 miles each day.

Again the Press keeps on peddling the same talking points how the Public school district is paying for the Private school busing  leading one to believe that private school students don't deserve busing and are taking money away from the public school district.  The state law mandates that all students even those who go to private schools get paid for busing if they live more than 2 miles away from the school Called aid in lieu of transportation . That money comes from the state or local taxes. Also not mentioned is that Lakewood township paid close to $2 Million dollars from the municipal budget to cover the courtesy busing for Public School children yet students of private schools who are not mandated must pay a $150 fee.

More from the APP Investigation
The cost and logistics are staggering: $29 million a year, 1,600 routes and 15,415 miles — the

It came down from 110 to 65 girls still waiting. The school year is over, its Graduation week camp season is here, but there are about 65 high school girls who have yet to be accepted into a school in Lakewood. It doesn't mean that there is a lack of  space, rather the schools have yet to sit down and work out the arrangements among themselves since some schools accepted the same students.
There is a new high school opening for the coming year Aderes Bais Yaakov, headed by Rav Bulman under the leadership of the Roshei yeshiva, Rebbetzin Drillman will be the menaheles. Supposedly, another school may open as well. Hopefully the girls can go off to camp knowing they have a school to come back to next year.

Not Even Fathers Day

A Prominent Rav in Lakewood recently spoke at his shul he opened up a Rambam and read aloud the Halachos of כבוד אב ואם Even if your parents are Reshaim, your father a baal aveira you are still obligated in the full mitzva of kibud av V'aim,  even a mamzer is mechuyav in Kibud Av. He than cried out about the many families that are ripped apart as children now have been coached to turn against their parents. He scolded the approach currently used by mental health professionals turning children against their parents blaming them for anything that went or is going wrong in their lives.

How times have changed. One of the foundations of Klal yisrael is the mitzvah of “Kibbud Av Va-Em”. It is always pointed out that we don't celebrate a once a year Mothers day or fathers day, for we have the mitzva each and everyday of our lives. Unfortunately, the secular approach has crept and seeped deep within our machane and the results are devastating and tragic. In June of 2018 there are children who are taught coached and encouraged not to speak to their parents. Therapists, social workers, askanim and even some rabbonim have been actively involved in child alienation separating children from their parents father and brainwashing a child to blame their parents for their shortcomings.

Its become common to look back at an upbringing and blame anything you want on the behaviors of how your parents raised you. Therapists validate children in talking bad about a parent and convincing them that past upbringing is the root cause of their problems. This is not only in the realm of divorce but sadly married children are turning against their parents after going to therapy. These married children are reaching out to other single siblings and turning them against the parents 15-20 years after the fact. Its nont only parents but in laws as well are sufering the same as one spouse encourages the other to join in and cut them out of their lives. This may sound shocking but this is happening in or frum heimish yeshiva community.

Mishpachos are now ripped apart with living yesomim, heartbroken parents who at the age of 60 after raising their children are left with no will to live as their children no longer speak to them. A father who lost both of his elderly parents recently said that his children not talking to him is worse than the loss of his parents.
We used to laugh at American culture for a once a year day dedicated to honoring parents now   we don't even do that.

We cry wheמ a young parent is taken from this worls leaving over yesomim, we beseech rachamim asking Hashem to to treat us like a father to his children while just the opposite is being done with our very own hands.

Lakewood Schools To Require students to use Clear Backpacks After Gun Incident

LAKEWOOD, NJ Patch  — Students in the Lakewood School District will be required to use clear backpacks when school starts in the fall as the district continues to look at measures to improve school safety, district officials said Wednesday evening.
Lakewood School Board Attorney Michael Inzelbuch said the district is introducing the requirement in response to the June 5 incident where a fourth-grader brought a handgun on a school bus and into school. In addition to the requirement for clear backpacks, the district will have metal detectors in all of the elementary schools by next week, he said, making it the first district in Ocean County to have them at all its schools. The high school and middle school already are equipped with metal detectors.

Petition: Concerns of Content and Safety on Digital Billboards

Concerned Lakewood youngeleit have started a petition about the digital billboards going up around town. Currently there is one at Hurley and Cedarbridge, New Hampshire and Cedarbridge and a another one just went up on Rt 9 and Central opposite the Lake with two boards facing Route 9 North and South. The group approached the Roshei yeshiva with their concerns, they responded they have nothing to do with the billboards. In a letter that will be delivered to the Lakewood township committee members, the undersigned point out to the spiritual dangers and safety hazards associated with digital billboards. They cite concerns over the content that can be displayed over the screens pushing a lifestyle that is anathema to what they strive for Peddling consumerism and affluence. They note that it is impossible to assume that there will be full control over content.
On the safety issue, many towns and cities ban these boards and do not allow them to be placed at busy intersections. Electronic billboards can distract drivers, ruin the aesthetics of the community and pose a potential safety hazard. At one point the Township did not approve a resolution only to be overturned again. They ask the township to reconsider and remove them. Hundreds have signed on already.

AG Sessions: About 15 percent of our open RLUIPA investigations involve synagogues.

In prepared remarks to the Orthodox Union advocacy mission Us Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced "A Place to Worship Initiative," aimed at raising awareness "about legal protections under RLUIPA [Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act]  he spoke about towns abusing zoning laws to keep religious institutions out of their backyard.
Too often, religious schools and their students face discrimination.  Some local officials even try to keep them out of their backyard by abusing zoning laws.

Lakewood BOE Attorney Contract Violates State Regulations

APP reports The $600,000 annual contract given to the lawyer for Lakewood's public schools  violates state education regulations according to records obtained by the Asbury Park Press
In an April letter, a New Jersey Department of Education official told the Lakewood Board of Education that the board cannot automatically pay lawyer Michael Inzelbuch a portion of that contact — $50,000 each month — without first seeing Inzelbuch's itemized billings to justify that cost.

Inzelbuch said Monday he has added more details to his bills to comply with state regulations.

And he also said he will accept the job for another year, despite saying one month ago he would turn it down.  "I made a conscious decision, I can work with them or litigate against them," Inzelbuch said, pledging to be an advocate for Lakewood's approximately 6,000 public school students.

Can't Book a Hall for the Simcha

Its harder to find a place or book a hall for Shabbos sheva Brachos than it is for a Chasuna in Lakewood. As Families grow the immediate mishpacha is that much bigger making it difficult to host a shabbos sheva brachos at home. Lately people are booking a  hal for shabbos sheva brachos first and than book a the wedding date based on that.
A letter  in this weeks Voice of Lakewood cofferoom complained that Locals in Lakewood can not book dates for a wedding even as Lakewood has 5 chasunah halls because halls are booking weddings for out of towners.

"It has come to my attention, that out of towners are making chasunas in Lakewood even now at the busiest wedding season of the year and therefore we Lakewooders have to wait months between engagement and wedding. I have nothing against out of towners however i believe every city has at least one wedding hall and for us Lakewood families there are ka'h five wedding halls, bt we are ka'h a lot of families in Lakewood.
Please lets all put a stop to this by calling up our halls and telling them not to book chasunahs where the Chosson and kallah are from out of town if anyone has a different better way to put a stop to this please share it with the rest of us. etc.."

Obviously printing these letters makes buzz and entertainment but the halls are allowed to do whatever they want and to rent it out to whomever they choose. These halls do not belong to the Lakewood community. Secondly have we forgotten that not so long ago Lakewooders would make chasunahs in Brooklyn. Did the people in Brooklyn tell the halls not to allow us in? did anyone remember the cheap affordable halls in Brooklyn, Le chateau, Ateres Shlomo, Torah Vyirah, Vayoel Moshe, Rose castle, Continental, Viznitz, Ateres Avrohom, Ateres Chaya, The Concord etc..the list goes on and on. We should be thankful that B"H we have wedding halls in Lakewood  with no major parking issues, and we should be proud to host simchas for anyone that wishes.
