NJ Assembly votes to Ban Marriage in NJ for Anyone under age 18

Sefardim and Chasidim will have a hard time getting married in NJ  if Gov. Murphy signs this bill into law. Today the NJ assembly judiciary committee voted in favor of A865, the bill to ban anyone under 18 from getting married in NJ. The state of Delaware signed it into law today and is the first state to do so.

The measure simply prevents a person under age 18 from getting married in New Jersey. Currently, anyone who is not an adult may marry with permission in New Jersey. for those age 16 or 17, a parent or guardian may give the ok.
If you are under age 16, a judge must approve the marriage.

Gov Christie Vetoed it last year saying it  “would violate the cultures and traditions of some communities in New Jersey based on religious traditions.” He also called it “disingenuous” to say that teens are unable to consent to marriage, given “New Jersey law permits the very same 16 year old to obtain an abortion without so much as parental knowledge, let alone consent according to a report in NJ Spot Light Read more HERE

  2. The Dems would ban all marriage if they could. Creates more voters for them. Makes people dependent on government.

    2. The only reason christie vetoed it was to gain votes. Nothing to to do with religion.

  4. Remind me again, why should I care about this? Is this an issue for us? Do we believe that people should get married under 18?
This is another non issue that the yehuda levin/rush limbaugh brigade use as a slogan.

    1. thank you for giving a name that describes what you are.

      1. many Orthodox jewish women get married at 17
      2. this is being led by a ex orthodox women, who refuses to accept a get.
      3. it beings legal to have sexual relations under 18 but not to get married, will by definition increase znus
      4. this is part of an overall leftist agenda to lower the age of communal responsibility (voting at 16, serving on community boards at 16), while at the same time raising the age of personal responsibility (marriage, and even criminal prosecution, (bill in NY would raise the age of youthful offender till the 22 birthday)

    2. 1. Perhaps but it is not essential. They can wait till 18 too. It is not a serious issue.

      2. Who cares who is behind it? It doesn't bother anyone.

      3. Are you saying that this law will make people have more illicit sex than if marriage was legal? It is 2018 now, marriage stops people having sex. Znus happens as often as it is able, marriage permission nnotwithstanding.

      4. So this is your real issue. Left bad, right good. And that is why I called it a rush limbaugh/yehuda levin issue. Not relevant to Judaism and Jews.

    3. 1. the torah prefers younger marriages
      2. when enemies of the jewish people attack something in Judaism, we should always fight it even if it would not be important kal vechomer when it is
      3. yes this will make people have more illicit sex than if marriage was legal, every single thing society as whole does that legitimizes pre marital sex makes the problem worse. Only a Tipesh would think that a law that allows a anyone to have sex with a 17 year old but does not allow them to get married would now increase znus.
      4. stop making strawmen and argue the point I said, the same person in the NY senate who sponsored the law raising the age of marriage also sponsored the law to lower the age on the community board to 16. The obvious contradiction is resolved Only if one understands the overarching reason is because liberals want to lower the age of communal responsibility while raising the age of personal.
      here are 2 more reasons
      5. the main pusher of this bill around the north east clearly stated that she was in a "forced" (due to her age) marriage shortly before her 20th birthday, reading the entire statements of the supporters of this bill reveals clearly that they don't want to stop at 18.
      6. this bill will lead to more abortions because abortion is legal but marriage is not. many women would keep the baby if they could get married, this why the right to life opposes this bill.

PS comparing r Levin to rush limbaugh is a chutzpa, and I have probably listen to less than an hour of rush limbaugh in my life including clips of him in news broadcasts
