Why We Read The Haftorah of Achrei Mos and not Kedoshim

Ohr.edu Rabbi Yehuda Spitz
This Shabbos, for those of us in Chutz La’aretz,[1] something atypical will occur during davening. When it comes time for the haftarah, chances are that the actual reading will not be the previously scheduled haftarah listed in your Chumash, that of Kedoshim, but rather the haftarah listed for the previous parshah, Acharei Mos. In fact, as the reading commenced in the shul where I was davening last year, so did a concurrent dispute with the gabbai, with mispalleleim arguing that the Ba’al Koreh was reading the wrong haftarah!
But, to properly understand why the ‘wrong haftarah’ was, it turns out, quite properly read, some background is needed.

Haftarah History
According to the Abudraham and Tosafos Yom Tov, the haftaros were established when the wicked

Two of the three northbound local lanes of the Garden State Parkway over Middletown-Lincroft Road in Middletown will be closed from 10 a.m. Friday, April 27th, through 5 a.m. Monday, April 30th, as permanent repairs are made to a bridge damaged in an accident in November.

Lakewood Primary Elections Who to Vote for?

Submitted.
Time to Give up on Lakewood?

Lakewood residents are getting their absentee ballots now. But who is there to vote for? Should we continue allowing the corruption of the incumbents to ruin our quality of life and keep raising our taxes year after year? No candidates decided to run to oppose Menashe and Meir for whatever reason. I am writing this as a concerned citizen that believes we can still save Lakewood from all the problems.

Write in Louie Follman And Harold Herskowitz for the Republican candidates in the primary. They have both said they would run in the general election if the community wanted them to. This is our last chance to save our town and try to stop the insanity.

Tell anyone you know that they should write in Louie Follman And Harold Herskowitz in the Place of Menashe miller and his running mate.

Get the word out and on voting day let's make sure we have a future in Lakewood.
Sincerely
Concerned citizens of Lakewood

A Sefer Torah for Ahuva Malka Zirkin A"H

                                                          DONATE HERE
To our dear family and friends,
Returning home from our dear Ahuva's levaya to sit Shiva is the hardest thing we have ever done. Raising our dear Ahuva Malka a"h and memories of her will stay in our hearts forever.
Her special smile and precious soul touched all that knew her.
Ahuva, we learned so much from you. You taught us to be happy, to appreciate life, and how to love and care.
There were so many heartwarming experiences our family underwent through the challenges of raising Ahuva a”h. We ask the tzibor to join us in doing two very special things as a zchus for Ahuva;

‘Hug your children, put away your phones and listen to each child. Use every precious minute you have to love them.
Our Rav said that when a child is niftar the biggest zchus and nechama is for a sefer Torah to be written and dedicated lieulu nishmasa - we are asking everyone to unite and help us make this a reality. Please click on the link, every bit will help make this possible.

We can't tell you how much the outpouring of love and care in the last two days has meant to us. The outpouring of chessed and how much you care has helped us get through each day. Each act of chessed should be a zchus for our dear Ahuva … May her holy neshama stand as a melitzas yosher for her family and all of klal yisroel.

A slap to the נשים צדקניות

The Nashim Tzidkaniyos in Lakewood are hurt and insulted, and angry, yes they dont read the APP but thats not the point. Talking to the press is always dangerous one never knows what will be added or what will be left out.
What was said about Lakewood Kollel wives is a sad attempt to appease and pander to something or to portray them as educated sophisticated with degrees  as if thats the goal in life to pursue and only in that fashion.

It undermined the thousands of women not only in lakewood but in all frum communities who kill themselves day in day out putting themselves out there for their families. What about the ones who dont pursue a career, the morahs, the baby sitters, the ones who have office jobs the stay at home moms the geshikte ones and tho not geshikte ones.  To quote from the article "Most Orthodox women in our communities complete their (bachelor's degree) and many get a masters," "Since we get married younger than in society at large, we have an anomaly: women working while men are still in school. This balances out as the men enter the workforce."
While there is an attempt to make it appear that most frum ladies get careers the article itself debunked it with data
According to U.S. Census estimates, 28 percent of women living in Lakewood age 25 or older have a college degree. Statewide 44 percent of women have college diplomas.

Mayor: Town Will Fix DEP Water Issue, Downplays Lakewood Growth

The DEP rejected the Lakewood master plan for failing to address adequate water supply but would reconsider if the town shows  there would be enough potable water for drinking, cooking and bathing. Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles told NJ.com  the township and the company (NJ American water) would do just that. "Unfortunately, I'm upset with my professionals for sending in paperwork that wasn't complete," Coles told NJ Advance Media. "Our guys are working on it."

The mayor also downplayed the  projected growth of Lakewood. The very same growth excuse they used to ram the master plan through and approve density, now they are downplaying it to get a pass from the DEP.

"The mayor rejected assertions that the proposed changes would double Lakewood's population, because growth was already spreading into neighboring communities. "A lot of people thought of Lakewood going to a quarter of a million people because the Orthodox community would only go to Lakewood," Coles said. "I don't believe it's realistic."

Meet The Other Mayor of Lakewood

APP profiles R' Aaron Kotler’s vision how he reshaped a school and community.
Lakewood beet Reporter Stacy Barchenger spent a Friday night meal at The Kotler home,  Conducted interviews with BMG Board members and other Lakewood power brokers about the man who runs BMG and credited for Lakewood's explosive growth yet "loathed for heralding what some see as out-of-control expansion beyond what township infrastructure can handle" .From advocating in Washington to widening rt 9 From camping under the northern lights in Norway or paying for a Talmids funeral, he sees himself as an advocate for the students of BMG and the Jewish community as a whole.

About the petition against the Cedarbridge mall  "They're seeing a gentrification of Lakewood, and that's of concern to them," Kotler said. "We're kind of leading the way in up-scaling Lakewood ... and weren't sensitive to that."

LAKEWOOD — Four dire words had Rabbi Aaron Kotler scrambling up Capitol Hill in 2010.
The phrase, "who is not married," was tucked on page 14 of the 906-page tome of the the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare. The words were a tiny parenthetical overlooked by many during the chaotic moment as Congress was passing health care reform.
The statement, though, had a profound meaning to Kotler, the president of Lakewood's Beth Medrash Govoha, the largest Orthodox Jewish yeshiva, or college, outside of Israel. Often called the Harvard University of Orthodox Jewish higher education, the 75-year-old school has about 6,700 students from around the world. Kotler is the third generation of his family to oversee the institution.
Kotler went to Washington with goals to get meetings and get those four words deleted.
“Try to buttonhole, same thing just as everyone else on Capitol Hill is doing," he recalled recently of his mad-dash to Congress. "The beauty of the legislative system is that people can do that."

As a noted college president, Kotler counts among his contacts former governors, legislators and prolific political donors. Kotler sees himself as an advocate for his students and the Jewish community as a whole.

In Lakewood, Kolter is a seen as a facilitator, a influential man who is loved for the growth the college has brought to the once-depressed Lakewood — and at the same time loathed for heralding what some see as out-of-control expansion beyond what township infrastructure can handle.

The 54-year-old husband and father of seven says he never sought such responsibility.

He is part of a family legacy that runs the Talmudic college, which has become a magnet for population and economic growth. Kotler's two-decade tenure at the helm has been marked by expansion. Lakewood is adding more homes faster than every other New Jersey town except Jersey City, and claimed the fastest-growing population last year. Orthodox Jews, many of who are drawn here by the college, account for 70 percent of the township's 100,000 residents, by official estimates.

Who Is Watching Your Baby?

In this weeks issue of Ami Magazine featured a article of two recent cases were private nurses harmed a baby they were hired to care for. In response Lakewood veteran Pediatrician DR. Reuven Shanik wrote a letter to his patients urging them to be vigilant and perform background checks when hiring a nurse or a Nanny even from a reliable agency. Letter was written on March, 29, 2018

We advise all families to use caution when hiring a private duty nurse for your children. It is imperative that you ensure the person you are bringing into your home to care for your children has had a background check. Do not assume an agency nurse has had a proper one.Ask for references. There have been several recent incidences of issues with these nurses. Even with references, it is recommend that you get a nanny cam". The nurse should be told that the camera is on at all times.

State Rejects Lakewood Masterplan after Town Fails to Show Adequate Water Supply

The NJ State DEP rejected the Lakewood Township MasterPlan and Plan Endorsement that was approved by the state Planning Commission since the township has not demonstrated its ability to provide adequate water supply for the expected growth TBL Reports.
The state wrote in a 10 page rejection letter explaining its desicion, they will however reevaluate should the Township satisfy the outstanding actions required see full letter HERE

Currently, the LTMUA is unable to provide service to new projects seeking CAFRA project approval in the LTMUA service area and does not have provisions in place to ensure adequate public water supplies to accommodate the projected growth envisioned by the Township. As a result, although the Township has made great strides to plan for and accommodate growth in a manner otherwise consistent with the intent and provision of CAFRA, the Department has determined that the Township has not comprehensively addressed the need for an adequate public water supply to serve its planned growth.

Judge Rules: Chabad Can Operate in Toms River Home

APP reports that the Chabad Jewish Center can continue to operate in a home on Church Road after a federal judge ruled that Toms River wrongly required the Chabad to acquire a variance to operate in a residential zone.
This ruling can pave the way for future zoning issues.

The report says, "U.S. District Court Judge Freda L. Wolfson said the township's Board of Adjustment violated the federal Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, the Fair Housing Act, and the U.S. Constitution in  barring Rabbi Moshe Gourarie from operating the Chabad without a variance."
"I'd just like to say that our clients are very pleased with the result and look forward to many years of a productive relationship with the community in Toms River," said Roman P. Storzer, of Storzer & Greene in New York and Washington, D.C., who represents the Chabad Jewish Center.

TBL: Where Are The Impact Fees? We've Been Lied To!

Take back Lakewood When the Master Plan was passed last fall, a key argument made by Brian was that in order to fix the roads we need increased density. You see, the developers will pay impact fees that will allow for bigger and better roads and less traffic. Yes, this Chelmite argument claimed that more density="less" traffic.
The Master plan was pitched as the solution to Lakewood's traffic problem due to the Impact Fees.
The Master Plan further called for Transportation Improvement Districts (TID) to be enacted in just a small part of Lakewood. At our request, a later amendment required TID's to be enacted throughout Lakewood before certain zoning rules would take effect.

But wait!! Impact fees had not yet been enacted! We asked how they could pass a master plan that increased density without enacting the offsetting impact fees. Further, once all of the zones are changed, developers can get approvals grandfathered in before impact fees are enacted!

So what was the solution to this glaring problem? Ray Coles made a strong promise that as soon as the Master Plan was enacted, they would work to quickly pass the impact fees that they'd been dragging their feet on for so long. With these reassurances, the master plan was passed.

Fast forward months later....and where are the promised impact fees?? Who will pay for all of the new roads if the Township refuses to assess impact fees? Wasn't the entire pitch of the Master Plan in order to assess and collect impact fees for roadway improvements?

LPD: Voluntary Security Camera Registration Initiative

Lakewood Police Dept  joins other municipalities across the nation by offering residents and business that have cameras on their property to register with the police department to help solve crimes known as SCRAM. You will only be contacted if a crime occurs in your neighborhood and you are willing to share any footage your cameras may have recorded and/or photographed. In 2014 a bill was introduced in NJ that Permits municipalities to enact ordinance requiring registration of private outdoor video surveillance cameras.

from the LPD website:
"In an effort to continue our commitment to providing excellent police services, the Lakewood Police Department is forming a community partnership that all residents and business that have cameras on their property can register with the police department. Participation in this partnership is completely voluntary. All registered information will be kept confidential and will only be viewed by authorized Lakewood Police Department personnel. We are not asking and will not monitor your cameras. This is strictly to be used as an investigative tool to aide officers and detectives."

Obviously, people are hesitant giving over access of their private home video to the govt, Read this article on copblock explaining the other side.

A growing number of police departments across the US want access to your video.
Surveillance Camera Registration And Mapping, or SCRAM as it’s called, is a program where police have residents ‘voluntarily’ register their home surveillance systems with the local police. The way the program is supposed to work, is when a crime is committed near your home, police can ‘request’ all the footage that your system recorded. Of course, if you don’t voluntarily give up the footage, police will either take it by force, or get a warrant to secure the footage.

I know what you’re thinking: Why on Earth would you tell the police you have a CCTV security system? It’s a very logical argument. I, for one, wouldn’t want the police to have access to any audio/video that I have. But in some areas of the country, residents are required by law to register those devices with the local police departments.

Gas Prices in Lakewood Over $3 a Gallon

This is when the gas tax comes back to bite, Some gas stations in Lakewood (Exxon Madison) are charging $3.10 per Gallon for credit. Other gas Stations in Lakewood are still in the $2.70 range (see Gas buddy) but prices are going up.

Gas prices in New Jersey and across the nation resumed their upward trend, due to Mideast tension and the approaching deadline to switch to more expensive summer-blend gasoline. The average price of a gallon of regular gas is $2.71, and was at $2.41 a gallon at this time last year.
Analysts say higher prices are expected as Memorial Day approaches along with the May 1 deadline to switch to summer-blend gasoline.

Israeli Police Brutality Make International News

The Israeli Police harsh response to protests in Yerushalayim about Giyus Banos has made the international media. See Video below.
The story was posted on the front Page of the Drudgereport April 15 edition along with a picture of frum Yidden. The headline read: Israel police use stun grenades to quell ultra-Orthodox 'rioters' and linked to a article on Yahoo News . Protesters were beaten and hospitalized in a new tactic to quell it.  "Israeli police used stun grenades Sunday to try to calm a violent protest by ultra-Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem, the latest angry demonstration against the military draft. A police statement said four officers were slightly injured in scuffles as law enforcement tried to disperse "several hundred ultra-Orthodox extremists" outside an army enlistment office in the holy city. "Police used stun grenades and water cannon against rioters," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told AFP."
Even more shocking are the comments on yeshiva world News Youtube channel: "Shoot them with real bullets" and "These people dont deserve to live".

NJ Dep Of Health: Romaine Lettuce linked to E.coli outbreak

Good thing it's not Erev Pesach. Dr. Shanik says to follow the CDC Guidelines and not eat Chopped romain

TRENTON –April 13, 2018 Chopped romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma, Arizona region is likely the source of an E. coli O157:H7 outbreak that has sickened at least seven New Jersey residents, including one in Sussex County, and a total of 35 people in 11 states, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
More from NJ Herald
No deaths have been reported.
At this time, the CDC said, no grower, supplier, distributor, or brand of romaine lettuce has been identified.
Consumers who have bought romaine lettuce -- including salads and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce -- should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick. If you don't know if the lettuce is romaine, throw it away, according to the advisory.

Website Launched "The Lakewood Response" Giving a Voice to the Vaccine Reaction

The Anti Vaxer Movement launched a website The Lakewood Response Giving a Voice to the Vaccine Reaction. Two Months ago a email sent out by The Vaccine coalition  reignited  the Vaccine debate again specifically in Lakewood. It set off swift responses within the frum Jewish Media and in Lakewood. They were called a small, fringe group that ignores the advice of medical professionals who overwhelmingly support immunizations. Dr. Rich Roberts painfully dis invited non vaccinated people from his bi annual Chol Hamoed carnival. Letters by prominent pediatricians in Lakewood were written in support of immunizations for children to prevent tragic occurrences and denouncing this movement.

On the website they claim there is a Deep State in Lakewood that has a monetary motive to push vaccines.

2018 Lakewood Municipal Budget 20 Million Surplus Anticipated

The 2018 Municipal budget will be voted on by the township committee. Officials proudly point out that taxes did not go up for the municipal portion. However they wont reduce it either or give back any of the surplus monies. They also use an old trick of the cap bank balance allowing the govt to tax more than the allowable 2% by carrying balances from  previous years. If they dont raise property taxes as much as it is permitted to do, they get to hold onto the unused amount in a 'cap bank' for three years.

The total anticipated 2018 budget is $94,850  Million total revenue anticipated for municipal budget. $58, 464,000 will be directly raised from local taxes. The rest comes from additional revenue.
According to the numbers there is a $23 million anticipated surplus.

Lakewood Blue Claws Home Opener Today

The BlueClaws are back opening  their 18th season in Lakewood with a seven-game homestand beginning Thursday, April 12th. The game will begin at 6:30 pm, expect Traffic in the area. The area around the stadium has developed a lot over the year as businesses moved in  and hundreds of residents now drive by on a daily basis. LPD usually sets up cones prior to the game Along Cedarbridge avenue. There is now a functioning traffic light at the intersection of the stadium by Avenue of the States that will impact the traffic flow.

The Blueclaws also announced new for this year "As always, it's jam-packed with fun for the entire family! The homestand also marks the grand opening if the new BlueClaws Mini Golf Course, Biergarten, and Boardwalk Gaming Area (Toyota World of Lakewood)."

Planning Board Approves Application at Cedarbridge Traffic Study conducted Bein Hazmanim

The Exiting traffic from the new shopping area will be a right turn only from Ave of the states to Pine street or ave of Americas Cars will not be able to make a left turn out toward Cedarbridge. The Traffic study says only an additional 20-30 cars per hour will make a right turn onto Pine street from Ave of the states during peak time as a result of the new approved facilities.

see Video HERE traffic report begins at 2:44:00

Last night the Lakewood Planning board approved a application to subdivide the 86 acre parcel of land that stretches from Pine street to Cedarbridge Avenue into 4 lots. Two parcels one of 69 acres and the other of 6 acres  will remain owned by the Township of Lakewood for future development.

The other two parcels  were approved for development. One parcel for 3.8 acres and the other for 7 acres. The board approved a 23,000 sq foot retail center, a 20,000 sq ft office building, a chase bank at 3,500 sq feet and a pad for 3,300.

Board members said this application has nothing to do with last years application for the shopping mall since its at the other end of the parcel opposite the stadium entrance. One board member said people should not read the blogs or rely on it for information. (Because the professionals and developers are honest and upfront about all the applications)

The Developer hired a traffic engineer who conducted a study during bein hazmanim since they had to wait for motorists to get used to the traffic signal at the intersection of cedarbridge and Ave of the States. The testimony was that the traffic will not be more than a level C which means that the average vehicle delay would be 25 seconds more at the intersection of cedarbridge and ave the states. Blueclaws traffic wont effect, since most games start after 6 o'clock.

A Resident challenged the traffic engineer how can they make a study when BMG and the schools were not in session. Additionally why do we trust a paid traffic study hired by the developer as opposed to other cities were the town does the study and the developer reimburses them.
Another resident pointed out that there is no affidavit on ownership of the property and the Mayor has to sign off since the township stills owns it until its given over and developed.

An Interaction at the Bowling Alley with a Lakewood Family

The original story (see below) was posted on the  Facebook page Portraits of the Jersey Shore  by Mr. Gregory Andrus and has been picked up by other media outlets. it was on Chol Hamoed Pesach.

This is a follow up post:
Hi everyone, Gregory from Portraits of the Jersey Shore sharing my heart here, and I just have to say how blown away I am for a second. I shared abut how I became friends with this man pictured here, Joel, and how I really enjoyed getting to know some of the people in his Orthodox community yesterday while bowling with my family. That post has reached over 8,000 people, has over 800 "reactions," 60 shares, and over 50 comments. The conversations that have ensued from people of different backgrounds and cultural contexts here on this page from that post have been amazing. People have been sharing their perspectives, their hopes - and yes their fears - with each other, and no one is calling each other names, or being disrespectful or mean-spirited in any way. You all are what makes this page so amazing. I am such a grateful man, for you each give me continued hope that this world can be a better place, one person, one interaction, one story at a time.

Original Post
My family and I went to the local bowling lanes on this rainy day. The place was filled to overflowing with people from the Orthodox Community, as they had off in celebration of their Passover. I didn’t mind, it just meant that we had to wait longer to get a lane. Now, elephant in the room, it is no secret that this community has been reviled wide and far by many people who live in proximity to the Orthodox community. So I was interested in seeing what my experience would be.
