Report: DOJ Investigating Howell Zoning Board Decision to Deny School Application

In 2015 the Howell Zoning Board denied a application to build a orthodox school. Congregation Kollel filed a federal lawsuit in May of 2016 against Howell Township and its zoning board claiming the denial of its plan to build a religious education center was motivated by religious "hostility." Last week a Judge refused to dismiss the case and ruled the lawsuit can proceed.

Now APP reports The Department of Justice is investigating whether a Zoning Board decision that denied a 2015 application to build an Orthodox school with dormitories was rooted in Antisemitism, according to Mayor Theresa Berger. App reports, the Mayor, Deputy Mayor Robert Nicastro and Councilman Bob Walsh are expected to have taxpayer-funded lawyers appointed for them in connection with the investigation. The nature of the investigation – and whether it's civil or criminal – is still unclear. read more at APP.com
