At a Time of Fake News and PR We Saw A Moment of Truth

Much was said about the Spontaneous reaction upon hearing the News that Shalom Mordechai Rubashkin was released. Yidden in frum communities throughout the world gathered and celebrated they danced in their homes their shuls and in pubic places. Thousands came out to greet him as he made his way home through Monsey and Brooklyn. It didn't take more than a few hours from when he sat in his cell to greet thousands of people in the streets.
We witnessed a pure joy we saw עמך yidden in a real moment.
NO PR Firms No ads no organizations involved it was people on their own reacting to their instincts of ahavas yisrael in their hearts.

Unfortunately the fake news Phenomenon has penetrated and seeped into the frum media outlets. Marketing campaigns and PR firms try hard to push agendas and organizations on a weekly basis. Sometimes there are asifos that takes months of arm twisting to get a few thousand people to come together creating an image on something that many dont truly feel part of the cause.

When Rubashkin was freed there was no prodding of individuals or kol koreh's creating a event, it happened all on its own. Even the events to raise money early on when the campaign started drew thousands beyond the expectations of the organizers. There was no need to sell it it sold itself.
Its nice to see something real once in a while and that was just witnessed on Zos Chanukah.
Submitted.

Words from the chef, Jason Cappetta (former chef of Ottimo Cafe)

"There really is nothing quite like starting up a new restaurant. Its like building a plane from scratch and hoping it will fly. It's an idea, it's a spark of passion, a collaboration of dreams, love, hard work and talent. It's finding out people's skills and nurturing them , it's identifying their weaknesses, overcoming them and finding out what they are made of. As a chef , it's taking what you have learned from years of physical and mental exhaustion and building a team that will execute the ultimate vision. The odds are against you, but still you see it through." Photos courtesy of Elan Kornblum

"Surreal" The Yated and the Rubashkin story

It was an unpopular stance to take, but Rabbi Lipschutz put pen to paper and wrote what was on his mind and in his heart. He couldn’t stand by silently as a good man was being maligned.

Yated Neeman
Surreal
By Rabbi Yitzchok Hisiger -  Dec 27, 2017
It’s a day and a moment that I will forever remember. We had dreamed, we had prayed, we had hoped. We had talked, we had read, we had pondered. We had written and we had reported. Shalom Mordechai had become part of our lives in some way, shape or form.

While Shalom Mordechai’s belief in his salvation seemed ever-present, we, in an honest moment, will admit that we had moments of questioning and doubt. There were good tidings and then there were apparent setbacks. Our emotions seemed to be on a proverbial roller coaster for about a decade.

The reaction we witnessed to the phenomenal news this past week was a reflection of just how personal Shalom Mordechai’s plight was to Klal Yisroel across the globe.
Here at the Yated, we didn’t just report on Shalom Mordechai. We seemed to be living his saga week in and week out.

I recall like yesterday when Rabbi Lipschutz became the first member of the Jewish media or of any Jewish group to publicly recognize and bring attention to the miscarriage of justice perpetrated in this case. He had the courage of his conviction to wholly devote his newspaper – and, in truth, his life – to the cause of Shalom Mordechai.

‘Can I go back to the cell?’ “I have to say a prayer (bentch).’”

Excerpt from Article in Yated Mei’afeilah L’orah – From Darkness to Light

And so it was that on the last day of Chanukah, a guard went to Shalom Mordechai’s cell and told him, “Pack up and leave. Get going.” “What’s the problem?” he asked, not daring to hope. Maybe they were going to transfer him somewhere. That would not be unusual. “You’ll find out. Just get going.”

He had just washed for hamotzie in his cell for a humble seudas Zos Chanukah. He grabbed his tallis and tefillin with a small Chovos Halevavos inside and went to the prison office. After a few minutes, the warden appeared. “Congratulations,” he said, holding out his hand. “President Trump has commuted your sentence. You are free to go, as soon as someone comes to pick you up.”

“My father was shocked,” a family member related. ‘It’s a Chanukah miracle!’ he blurted to the warden. “After a few seconds of deepest heartfelt thanks to the Ribono Shel Olam, he came back to earth. ‘Can I go back to the cell?’ he asked. “I have to say a prayer (bentch).’” “‘No, you can’t go back there,” the warden said. ‘You stay here.’

“So he sat down and bentched until my mother came to pick him up. And what a bentching that was.”

LPD: Victim in Fatal Crash struck Twice

Patch -- A Lakewood man has been identified as the pedestrian killed on Christmas Day when he was struck by two cars as he tried to cross Cedar Bridge Avenue, Lakewood police said.

Roger A. Conover, 45, died Monday evening at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood, where he was taken following the accident, Lakewood Detective Sgt. Gregory Staffordsmith said.

Conover was crossing Cedar Bridge Avenue just west of Martin Luther King Drive about 7:30 p.m. when he was hit by a 1997 Nissan Maxima driven by a 47-year-old Jackson Township woman, Staffordsmith said. The Nissan was eastbound on Cedar Bridge, he said. Conover was then hit a second time by a 2017 Toyota Sienna that was westbound on Cedar Bridge and was being driven by a 33-year-old Lakewood man, Staffordsmith said.

Article: Rubashkin Was Put On Trial - But So Were We

Article in The Forward written by a Lakewood Resident.

Last Wednesday President Trump unexpectedly commuted the sentence of Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin. Rubashkin had been the executive of Agriprocessors, which was, at one point, the largest Kosher meatpacking plant in the United States.

At the time of his commuted sentence, Rubashkin was eight years into a 27-year sentence for financial crimes he committed as he tried to keep his business afloat in the aftermath of a massive Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid on his plant in 2008.
45 members of Congress and 107 legal experts (including six former attorneys general) signed letters voicing concerns about prosecutorial misconduct in the way the case was handled, as well as the disproportionality of Mr. Rubashkin’s sentence. A “We the People” petition attempted to raise these concerns with President Obama; it doubled the threshold of signatures needed to qualify for a response from the White House — which promptly shrugged it off, citing separation of powers.

And then, suddenly, he was free.

Throughout the Haredi community, the news spread like wildfire — and with the reports, incredible, pure and unadulterated joy. Videos of the spontaneous celebrating circulated like wildfire, and almost immediately, the celebrations were misunderstood and condemned.

Rubashkin Helps get Girl into Lakewood High school

Updated:
Some say it's a miracle to be accepted into a school in Lakewood. There were a few girls who were still not in school as of Chanukah. According to reports in Israeli media kikar Shabbat  Rubashkin called the school owner and asked to take the girl in.
Updated from Matzav.com

Two girls in Lakewood, New Jersey, who were unfortunately out of school have now been placed thanks to the influence of Reb Shalom Mordechai Rubashkin.

A group of school administrators and principals had gathered to discuss the plight of these two girls. It was decided to hold a goral (draw lots) to determine which school would take in these girls. The attendees agreed to participate in the goral so long as all the other schools would participate as well.

It was at that moment that one of the representatives of a school received a phone call. The caller was none other than Reb Shalom Mordechai Rubashkin. Somehow, he had been informed of the proceedings and was asked to call.

Reb Shalom Mordechai Rubashkin, with his usual positivity, kindly asked the school administrator to take in one of the girls, stating that he would be willing to exchange any zechusim or s’char that he acquired through his yissurim and nisyonos over the past eight years during his imprisonment for the s’char of one Yiddishe girl being excepted into a Yiddishe school.

Who will be Lakewood Mayor in 2018

The Mayor of Lakewood is usually voted on every year by the committee and it goes in rotation based on who has a majority of seats  between Republicans and Democrats. The Republicans currently have a 3-2 majority. Last year Committeeman Delia was expected to be mayor and said so two weeks before the new year. In a last minute move the township voted in Mayor Coles from the Democrat Minority.
See here  Mayor Coles sworn in for 2017
In a recent interview Ray Coles outlined his plans for 2018 perhaps hinting that he expects to keep the mayors seat in 2018. At the last township committee meeting of 2017 no major fanfare was done to indicate the mayor won't continue for next year.  As always it won't be the township who will decide on the next year's mayor.

Why Lakewood Rabbis Voted for Trump

Great American Thinker BY Rabbi Yaakov Menkin
Not Just Jerusalem: Why America's Rabbis Voted Trump and Don't Regret It

Yes, you read correctly.  America's rabbis voted for Donald Trump.
Given the common belief that Jews are liberal, this may come as a surprise to many.  But not only do Orthodox Jews (the traditionally observant) have very different political leanings from their more liberal brethren, but they now encompass the vast majority of American Jewish clergy.

Lakewood, N.J. is the home of the largest rabbinic seminary in America and home to tens of thousands of its alumni.  In a few square blocks, you'll encounter more rabbis than liberal seminaries have produced in several decades.  Lakewood also produced the largest pro-Trump majority in 2016 of any New Jersey town, despite a higher percentage of immigrants, impoverished, and non-whites than most other pro-Trump communities.

Rabbis voted Trump not for financial benefits; it is liberal candidates who support generous government programs.  They supported him not simply because of his pro-Israel posture, although he has exceeded expectations with his new, commonsense approach to the right of Israelis to live in peace and security.  Neither did they blind themselves to Trump's failings.  They do not support what he said on a bus 12 years ago or appreciate the un-presidential things he says or tweets on a daily basis.  They look askance at casinos and beauty pageants and have little patience for "reality TV."

So what is it about Trump that they liked on Election Day, and like even more a year later?

Rubashkin and Lakewood

Rabbi Pinchos Lipschutz of the Yated Neeman talks to the Lakewood shopper about Rubashkin and his connection to the Lakewood community:

"Nowhere was Reb Shalom Mordechai's plight more keenly felt than here in Lakewood, says Rabbi Pinchos Lipscuhtz. "Thousands of people came to the rallies we made in Lakewood". He got the most chizuk, the most letters, the most connection from Lakewood. It was a beautiful thing to see, he wanted to come to Lakewood the day after he came home to personally thank the community for standing behind him. And while logistically the proposed Thursday night event did not work out, there are plans in the works to have Reb Shalom Mordechai come to Lakewood next week.

Audio: R' Yehoshua Balkany Discusses the Rubashkin Release on Talkline Radio show

Last night on the Zev Brenner show Rabbi yehoshua Balkany brother in Law of Shalom Mordechai Rubashkin discusses the release. He slammed Senator Chuck Schumer for opposing Rubashkin’s release when President Trump initially asked him to write a letter in support of a presidential pardon. Trump would have done it sooner if not for the intense criticism he faces on a daily basis from the media. He said it was Satmar and not Lubavitch who spearheaded the campaign to free Rubashkin from prison. A group of 24 stamar chasidim are to thank for igniting the campaign joining both factions of Satmar who worked day and night. They visited him every week and took on a large financial chunk. He mentioned Rabbi Pinchos Lipshutz of the Yated for helping with lawyers and advertisements spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising that brought up millions of dollars to help R' Shalom Mordche for the great injustice

Who Is to Blame For Lakewood Driving

Audio yesterday of a Radio show discussing Lakewood Driving blaming the community of course. (Audio From FAA blog.)

Yes its true there are over 100 accidents a week in Lakewood  most of them fender benders but there are injuries r'l. Many factors contribute to these accidents. The lack of a normal grid, over development, bad drivers, a infrastructure that was used for horse and buggies, roadways that compel drivers to make bad decisions among other reasons. The Prosecutor office carried out a ticket blitz highlighting 14 fatalities that took place in Lakewood this year. While they are unfortunate most of then had nothing to do with Lakewood driving. 4 fatalities were on the Garden State Parkway that runs through Lakewood. Others were pedestrians crossing dangerous roadways late at night or on weekends. But that didn't stop the media to blame the Orthodox Jewish community for the so called  Lakewood driving. Did any one take a statistic of the minority make up of those involved in accidents?
Politicians recently made statements about the population growth which will naturally raise the stats of car accidents. They forgot to look in the mirror for the over development and dangerous roadways they created themselves.
Traffic enforcement is welcomed when it is meant to fix a problem not when it is done to ticket the way out of problems.  Local websites that continue to highlight Dash-cam videos only reinforce a bad stereotype about Lakewood. Instead of focusing on making Lakewood a safer driving experience it is used as another means to bash and portray the orthodox community in a bad light.

Any Frum city has an infrastructure of essential needs that are here for the tzibbur and belong to the shtut. Many frum communities have services and organizations such as  Mikvaos, Chevra kadisha, Kashrus, Mosdos haTorah,Mosdos hachesed such as hatzolah, bikur cholim, and many chesed organizations. In a perfect world, they are under a elected vaad haair which are appointed by the tzibbur and there is accountability and transparency in those who are appointed to run these services.
Services which are communal in nature that are controlled by yechidim serving the needs of a few at the expense and quality of life of the klal. Unfortunately, when yechidim control the services of the tzibbur their personal interests come first. Self appointed community liaisons with government officials is no help when the focus is only on furthering ones personal interest and advancement.

Self appointed spokesmen and Vaads who claim to represent the majority are a perfect example. They issue statements to the media which only do harm. The

“Nes Chof Hei” Wake Up and Smell the Coffee!

By: Yehuda Zayit

In News that can only be dubbed as classic Chanuka vintage, Turkey’s President announced that it will move its embassy to East Jerusalem, the future capital of Palestine – Just as you thought Trump’s Yerushalayim proclamation pushed Israel past the finish line.
The timing here is not happenstance – the “pach shemen” or cruse of oil’s message, resonates, Bayomim hohaim Bazman Hazeh.
World events don’t hinge on political clout – The menorah exhorts us all, when Hashem wills it so, it’s lights out! Jewish history plays tricks on the dead – the likes of Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan and the rest who lived from the immediate moment.
The Hasmonean legacy of “veal hamilchamos she-asisa laavoseinu” debunks air force general, Tamir Eshel’s assertions that the new F-134 plane yields “unimaginable military power”.
It intones, Israel military Braggadocio is to reality, what Babe Ruth is to Shakespeare. The I.D.F. is currently eager to share the wealth of culture it espouses with the Torah oriented. Instead Chanukah’s revelation intervenes: Put aside the F-135. Why not share the stealth – the knowledge that a higher source writes the script of civilization in the Mideast – not some top Israeli brass from the land of bilk and money.

Jackson Leaks: AG Subpoena to Jackson Townhip

JL: As mentioned in the Township Council meeting last week, Jackson Township is now under investigation by the NJ Attorney General and the US Department of Justice for passing certain laws targeting Orthodox Jews. Later in the meeting, permission was granted for the construction of an eruv in Jackson using attachments to utility poles as part of a preliminary settlement in a lawsuit brought by Agudath Israel against Jackson.

Below is the subpoena sent to the Township by the Attorney General’s office, requesting documents and communications related to Ordinance 03-17 and Ordinance 04-17, which prohibited schools and dormitories in most zones in the

A potential for tragedy was halted last night after a table caught fire from a menorah at a home in Lakewood, NJ. In an exclusive interview with Matzav.com, the homeowner, a resident of Blue Jay Way, off of Massachusetts Avenue, explained that he had no choice but to think quickly after the heavy duty plastic table on which his family had lit their menorahs caught on fire.

Chabad and Toms River in settlement talks over Discrimination Lawsuit

Chabad of Toms River filed a lawsuit last year against the town claiming anti Semitic hostility towards their efforts to build a shul. APP reports that assistant Township Attorney Anthony Merlino said the two sides continue to discuss settlement terms, but no agreement has been reached. He described the negotiations as   "fits and starts sort of process."

Rabbi Moshe Gourarie filed in a federal civil rights lawsuit against the township in March 2016, charging that "anti-Semitic hostility" and local opposition to the township's ultra-Orthodox Jewish population are the reasons why the Chabad Jewish Center has been told it needs a variance to operate as a house of worship.    An interesting article, about An ancient, anonymous song for Shabbos Chanukah, Ichlu Mashmanim, appears in siddurim and is chanted in some communities. The whole composition sings the praises of food, meals, meat dishes, wine and miscellaneous culinary delights to be consumed on that Shabbos and the line ending each stanza goes: “A beis kur sell or lease; rent a beis kur for Shabbos Chanukah!” In his Responsa (137), Mahari of Bruna, a pupil of the Terumas HaDeshen, remarks that no Torah scholar could have written the song as a Chanukah meal is not defined as a se’udas mitzvah.

Justice Dept and AG office Investigating Jackson Township

On Wednesday evening the Jackson council approved a resolution that will allow the construction of an Eruv. At the meeting Jackson township Attorney tells the APP the town is being investigated by both The U.S. Justice Department and the New Jersey State Attorney General's Office if the township has discriminated against Orthodox Jews in land-use issues, Township Attorney Joan Cipriani told the APP  "The township has been involved in a fair amount of litigation.
Avi Schnall, NJ director for Agudath Israel, said he welcomed the news about the federal and state investigations. He told the paper,“Jackson Township has definitely introduced some ordinances over the past few years that are quite questionable and we are sort of comforted in knowing that the Attorney General is looking into it," Schnall said.

Halacha of Joining Health care Share insurance

Open enrollment deadline approaching Tomorrow those who cant afford are joining religious based medi share health sharing groups. Some of these groups make you sign on to share in their religious beliefs.  For these Halachic issues speak to your Local Rabbi there are various opinions on this subject.

Letter printed in Hamodia.
As a part of the lower-middle class, I can definitely relate to the controversy over the Affordable Care Act, aka “Obamacare.” Premiums are just getting more expensive, and deductibles make coverage out of reach for basic health care needs.

I’ve recently been introduced to the concept of health care sharing, and am intrigued by the potential benefits, especially to the frum community. Health care sharing, in simplified terms, involves an organization whose members share common beliefs and pay a set amount per month, which goes toward their own and/or others’ medical bills. Monthly payouts are low ($198-$298 for a couple, with a $1,000 “deductible”), and there is no government intervention, as health care sharing is NOT a form of insurance. Members of health care share groups are exempt from Obamacare (non-insurance) penalties.

Open Enrollment Deadline is Tomorrow

From Cosmo Insurance
Many Americans still have not signed up for health insurance.  The open enrollment deadline is days away and if people fail to sign up, they’ll find themselves having to pay the Obamacare penalty next year. Most Americans don’t know that you have a 30 day look period to try out your new health insurance plan.  There are other things to look for the last of people who have not signed up yet.  HeatlhCare.com gives five other tips for these Americans:

 1.       There’s an estimated 4.5 million uninsured Americans who qualify for a bronze plan with no monthly cost.  Even those who won’t use their health insurance can get free preventative care and avoid the Obamacare tax penalty.

Lakewod Public Schools Get Failing grade in State report

Lakewood's public school district got a failing grade in most areas on its own report card, according to a recent report.  APP reports The district failed in areas of instruction and program, fiscal management and governance. In two others – operations and personnel – the district excelled.  The Bard held a meeting this week but there was no discussion abut the report. The one hour meeting "mostly included fanfare over a student art contest." writes the APP.
Michael Inzelbuch, the board attorney, said a lack of discussion did not mean apathy on the part of the board. “Discussion is great but action speaks louder than words," he said.

Rav Shteinman's Tzavaah for Lakewood: Establish a Vaad Hachinuch

The City of Lakewood, NJ was Zoche to host  Rav Shteinman Zatzal 4 times while he came to give chizuk in chutz Laaretz. Despite his old age Rav Shteinman traveled all over the world giving chizuk to yidden in frum communities. During one of his visits to Lakewood either in 2006 or 2010 a meeting took place at the home of the Lakewood Rosh yeshiva, in attendance were roshei mosdos roshei Chabura and other askanim. The discussion surrounded Chinuch issues and Rav Shteinman encouraged those assembled to create A vaad Hachinuch that will be staffed by Mechanchim and Rebbeim to deal with the school acceptance issue. Unfortunately to this day it has not happened, it's time to establish it now.
While there are selfless individuals who deal with placing children in schools, a vaad hachinuch is essential to make sure kids get placed in the right school that suits their needs. The decisions should be made by Mechanchim as Rav Aaron Leib suggested. Watch the famous Video of Rav Shteinman were he adamantly yells Gaaveh Gaaveh gaaveh pertaining to not taking kids in to school for "Frummeh cheshboines"  גאווה, גאווה גאווה.
