Los Angeles Times: Reports on Lakewood

L.A. Times:  reports from 3,000 miles away, a mixed report about the raids.
It was a spectacle nobody in this sleepy New Jersey town would forget.
Early one Monday morning, police and FBI agents in bulletproof vests bounded up the steps of suburban townhouses and split levels, threatening to break down the doors, hauling out in handcuffs husbands and wives in the distinctive clothing of ultra-Orthodox Jews.......It was the dramatic kickoff of a series of well-publicized raids
“None of these people used any of this welfare money for an extravagant lifestyle. They were struggling to make ends meet and trying to pay medical bills,” said Harold Herskowitz, a businessman who runs a toy store in Lakewood. He believes the prosecutions were motivated by hostility toward the ultra-Orthodox.
“I’m the child of Holocaust survivors; I don’t appreciate Jewish people dragged out in public early in the morning,” Herskowitz said.

“You have a family or six or seven or eight, somebody is paying the mortgage, somebody is paying the taxes, they have two cars in the driveway, they’ve got food for all the kids … and they’re reporting their total income at $10,000,’’ said Joseph Coronato, the Ocean County prosecutor who took the lead in the case. “You have to ask — what is going on here?’’Read more HERE

  4. Hh. I think you should change your tune a bit because one can deduce from your comment that its ok to cheat the system as long as you dont live a lavish lifestyle and/you cant make ends meet.

Picking fights with the government for arresting Jewish people in the same manner they would arrest anyone else accused of these crimes does not help our cause.

Particularly when (thanks to the VAAD BTW)they agreed to not publicly arrest the later alleged perpetrators.

    1. That is not the way they typically arrest people for nonviolent crimes of this degree. They certainly don't call the media to videotape the arrests.

    2. The vaad blew it by throwing the community under the bus during the raids they were silent and called those arrested bad apples. When it counted the Vaad was AWOL. They did not get their hands dirty.
The outrage was fierce from balei Batim who were shocked at the vaad response or lack of it.
The amnesty program looks like it will backfire big time you c as needed thank the vaad for what will be coming in the months ahead.

    3. The FBI commonly does early morning arrests. They apparently do notify the media because there is plenty of footage of other people getting arrested in this manner.

The media is not going to come to film Joe Schmoe get arrested. They will come to film a frum person getting arrested on any allegation.Which another reason why we have to be super careful not to do anything that can lead arrest in the first place.

The amnesty had nothing to do with the Vaad. It was other askonim. I am not convinced the others do know what they are doing. But the Vaad, with their bloc vote, could not stop such a thing. That should tell us all, either how motivated they are, or how efficient they are.

    1. Exactly who gave the vaad any permission to speak on our behalf, all they do is hurt us.

    2. There is somebody else who seems to also feel he is our spokesman. Somehow he is always speaking for us. And I don't mean the Vaad.

  8. I believe it was the feds who actually video the arrests. most Likely they did it because they wanted to protect themselves against anyone trying to accuse them of any thing done illegally during the arrests. Hh o didnt hear you screaming when all those; nj politicians got arrested and videotaped or at the rubashkin plant where it was also videotaped.
And those were non violent crimes too.
