Lakewood Mayor Responds to Criticism at Meeting

Lakewood Mayor responds angrily after resident questioned the lack of leadership from township officials following the recent events in Lakewood.  see video below minute 39:40. The resident was upset at the Township committee for not defending the reputation of Lakewood over the last few weeks. The Mayor said he spoke to various media outlets and that 99.9 percent of Lakewood residents get up early and work their tale off to support their families. Here are some quotes from the mayor during the raids:

“It really bothers me when people take advantage of programs like this,” Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles told the Asbury Park Press. “I have a waiting list of Section 8 (housing assistance) vouchers of maybe 2,000 families that really need it. I hate to see things like this.”

“To see something like this happen is just like a knife in the heart. There’s so many people out there who need the help. When something like this happens, it turns people against everybody,”

The mayor asked: “I just want people not to jump to conclusions, not to draw conclusions about an entire community, an entire township, based on the actions of a few people. We’re a township of probably over 100,000 folks, and no matter how hard you try, you’ll always going to have people who will take advantage of a system.”

Raymond Coles, mayor of Lakewood, said he didn’t know the specifics of the allegations. “Tens of thousands of people who moved here over the years work as hard as any of us to put food on the table and make sure their kids get a good education,” he said. “No town’s image should be tarnished by the actions of a small number of people.”

  1. Typical political double talk after the fact they start backtracking but who can blame when you have to appease all factions of the town to get their votes

Ray!(my spellcheck keeps changing your name to Rat!)
You were quoted in those multiple papers saying that this theft is inexcusable . There isn't enough money for people that really need it. You made assumptions about a few people without knowing the facts. You know the real corruption in our town

  3. We that read here know what needs to be done, but the rest of the town does not ever agree at the ballot box. Our town is growing so fast that we can not convince the new comers about the problems that need fixing soon enough, so they will just overwhelmingly vote what the loudest voice tells them to. That is my fear.

    1. As soon as there is a responsible, mature, articulate, independently successful individual running, you will see how quickly people will agree at the ballot box. Until that happens, we are all wasting our time.

    2. I liked the new candidates running for council. Why didn't you? What can they do better?

For years people have told me they thought the elections were rigged. I thought they were just conspiracy theorists. Recently I was shown some voting statistics from past elections. The numbers make no sense. I also always wondered why Shenky and the VAAD were always concerned who the county clerk should be. The machines are easily rigged, and areas that are anti VAAD suspiciously have a very low turnout even when people reported seeing many voters at the booths. I can assure you that the better candidate we get, the larger the loss will be. We will be endorsing Moishie Raitzik in November . There should be no way he can lose against the VAAD. Let's see what happens.

  4. Your anger at Larry Loigmans accusing you for being silent regarding our towns reputation was laughable. Your statements to media was an offense to the Jewish community. You immediately accused our families of stealing. You never once questioned the vicious manner the police and media took in persecuting these families. You are now trying to backtrack. Too little too late .

  5. I'm sorry. I think you're being overly critical - his and other's statements were defending the community as a whole and confirming our adherence to the law. In retrospect it's easy to say, if I was called upon to make a public statement, I would have first defending the accused - saying they aren't guilty until proven innocent, before defending the community as a whole. Which they did quite well, in my opinion.

  9. I found the mayors reaction yo Loigman quite shocking. The statements he made yo the media did not appear to defend or stick up for Lakewood. Larry was right.
