Lakewood Children Have a High rate of Aid Requests from Health Program

Report: Over the last five years, 14 percent of the funds from a state program benefiting sick children went to Lakewood families

APP reports Lakewoood school monitor explained the disparity "We have a high number of children who have special medical needs that arose from genetic disease. A lot of children in the Orthodox community have this,’’ Shafter said. “In some cases, it requires special environmental conditions. We also have a number of children who need one-on-one nurses.’’

Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, and Jeffrey Lamm, spokesman for the Office of the State Comptroller, said the fraud investigation by the two agencies is continuing. The FBI has also participated.

Our community has become much better at reaching out for resources. This is one example of that," said Rabbi Moshe Weisberg, a member of Lakewood's Vaad.

  1. This article is a bit misleading. While many in Lakewood have used the catesrophic fund, myself included, within the Lakewood area there are none to little OT providers. The closest being the children's specialized hospital with waiting periods of months. With my child we had no choice but to go to a private out of network OT that costed of thousands of dollars.
There would have been no way I would have been able to go to OT without that fund.
Most people in other communities are unaware of the fund...

  2. The papers love to bloat the Lakewood numbers to make us look bad. At the same time the over therapising by therapists adds to the equation. But we a community that puts the education of our children as top priority and parents will do whatever is best for their children.

  3. How come they dont report that Lakewood has the lowest rate of single moms? or the lowest rate of suicide, or the lowest rate meth rehab centers, etc. etc.
Could it be Lakewood put a higher priority on their kids than other communities? Maybe they are more involved in their health and well-being and thus they seek better and a higher standard of medical care. Maybe the doctors they use are more expensive or out of state and are not covered by Jersey Care, and thus the community which seeks out all resources available makes use of all assistance financial or otherwise wherever it can be found.

This is unheard of. Because one community has a higher rate of using a service, the prosecutor and the APP automatically assume fraud is involved? There are so many factors here. Higher birthrates. The orthodox community has a close knit communication network to find out about available programs. The orthodox community places a higher importance on health and well being. The orthodox community has parents that care about their children. There are many things that orthodox communities value more than others. Do they question the value that Asian communities put on college degrees? Are they Investigating why so many scholarships go to them? Are they investigating how many Protestants are using drug or methadone programs? How many abortions and family planning services being used by others? We use what is available to us. I remember when WIC was literally begging people to sign up. The government allocated millions to the program and they didn't have enough customers. Now maybe we should spend millions more investigating if anyone got an extra pack of cheese they didn't deserve? And many of us don't even take advantage of services or programs that we are entitled to. This whole investigation is a way to terrorize our community and make those that can't stand us happy . The only problem is that the people that are truly causing us to be hated are sitting back and laughing while the little guys have their lives ruined. Hopefully those causing all of this turmoil will realize they picked the low hanging fruit but there are weeds growing all over the place .

A final note to the APP
When they mention someone committing fraud, they note very blatantly that they are an orthodox Jew or a Rabbi. When the articles mention someone who is speaking out about the corruption , such as the FAA, TBL, or the hundreds opposing a building project, there is no mention of their orthodox affilitlation.

  4. There are almost no Therapy Centers that are in network for Jersey care in ocean county.
Its so terrible that we care so much about our children and we try to get busing (that we pay taxes for), school vouchers, better medical care, parks, etc. etc.
Its a shame we don't care more about whether or not our tattoos should be on the neck or behind the ear. Or maybe if we would spend more time on having a pet dog or three and shining our cars twice a week, instead of wasting so much time, energy and resources on making a better life for our children, maybe then the APP Klux Klan will be more understanding . Or maybe not.

If the state of NJ could allocate millions to drug addiction programs, which is a problem mostly caused by pharmaceutical companies and the overprescibing of pain medications, perhaps they could find it in their hearts to fund special needs services. Municipalities are not required to pay for drug treatment, why should they have to pay for special needs services? Why should somebody that moves to Jackson have to sue the town to pay 90 thousand dollars to send their child to SCHI? Most of these children cannot be in a regular school setting. And why should Jackson taxpayers have to pay for it? Our politicians have shortchanged us. Bob Singer! You piece of ****. What do you spend more time doing? Figuring out how to get housing on the Eagle Ridge golf course? Or how you can help Save families burdened with special needs children and taxpayers left with the task to pay for their needs? You used up all your Senate favors for your stadiums and to get things for your buddies. You should be ashamed of yourself. If i were your priest I wouldn't allow you to accept communion. Too bad you have the Prosecutors and judges in your pocket. You should have been in jail long ago . We all would have been better off.

  6. The nj.com said there is no fraud involved here. They said its because we have larger families and have a better network of finding out about programs

  7. Not to mention, lakewoods Jewish community has a higher rate of children with disability because they don't do abortions

  8. Bear in mind that many families with special needs children move in from other states because lakewood is unique with its programs for jews with special children.

  9. There are families who have moved to Lakewood because there is SCHI and The Special Children's Center amounts other services available for children with special needs.
Also being that there are allot of low income families in Lakewood, the eligibility for Catastrophic fund is higher than allot of other higher income areas of N.J.
And of course there is ALLOT more networking in the Lakewood community, helping families be aware of programs such as the Catastrophic Fund. Thats the nice thing about being part of a friendly, loving and caring community.
Next thing you know the APP will start hating on friendly, loving and caring communities.

  10. Could someone fire this self appointed Vaad spokesmouth??
The guy keeps on spewing one stupidity after the next first calling us bad apples and now this brilliant statement that "we are much better at reaching out to resources". He could have stressed the value we place on education but instead added fuel to the fire giving the haters more ammo that we know how to moooch the system.

  11. "The only problem is that the people that are truly causing us to be hated are sitting back and laughing"
The big people know who they are.
What everyone else knows that C.... and L... cause so much hate. The many "therapists" that offer their services to anyone who wishes regardless the necessity. They will enroll any child and keep them in their clinics as long as possible just to make money. The owners get a share of the grant, the more children the more money. Not to mention all the hate these organizations caused between children and their parents and the rest of the family.
The APP should choose who to target and not blame the entire community for these people who are laughing at the oilem.

I gave my medicaid as proof of income and they told me it's not enough in the past it never was a problem... they needed paystubs and a proof of the stipend that my husband recives from BMG! they also asked all sorts of funny questins like if rent or have a mortgage.
they made me feel like a criminal that i am getting wic for my children...

    3. Its not only jews. Its everyone. Get off your high horse and abide by the rules. Remember, nothing is for free. If the government is trying to help you out brcauae you hit hard times then they have the right to ask you and everyone else questions to determine your eligibility. Its people like you who cause us to be second guessed.

  13. So misleading. Why should we be punished for sharing knowledge of programs within our community. Most of us have large families and low income so we are eligible.

    3. the app used this fake story to try to keep the story of the arrests in the news. this has no connection to the arrests so why did they barely mention this and focus almost entirely on rehashing the arrests? why did they once again bring up the fake statistic they were caught lying about that lakewood has the highest percentage of people on welfare (since they were caught lying they phrase it in a different way so it isn't an outright lie but they want most readers to think lakewood has the highest percentage). why did they again rehash that fake statistic when the supposed story has nothing to do with that? why did they again rehash the stupid comment someone gave them about jews having large families so they need more programs when it has nothing to do with this non-story?
obviously the only point of writing under this headline was to keep the arrests in the news so they can keep getting clicks by providing a forum for hate.

    4. Right. So what. We know they are in business to sell papers and get clicks. Stories about Jews especially stories making Jews look bad ,sell papers.

  14. Do you know what it costs to House an Inmate in Jail with all the associated Legal Costs . Judges, Prosecutors, Bailiffs , court Clerks, Etc etc.
How Many Orthodox Jews or for that matter any Jews are in Jail. Perhaps less than a Half of 1% , How many Jews commit Violent crimes
The Tax payers need to pay for all of this
