Is Lakewood township Discriminating Against Private School Students

Once again the Lakewood Township committee gave another million dollars of tax money for Non Mandated programs to public school students. This time it went to the athletic leagues that were cut from the school district budget. Previously The Lakewood township committee sponsored the courtesy busing costs for all public school students while Private school students have to pay a $150 per child fee. The LSTA that controls the private school busing only got money that was intended for the mandated busing of private school students, any extra money, they were allowed to use to cover the courtesy portion but they are still charging a fee.

What Legal right does the township have to pay for non mandated busing of public school students and not cover the cost to the private school students for their non mandated busing. You cant give one sector and ignore the other. If they are paying for busing they should pay for everyone, it must be across the board.
The township has a surplus of money and is spending it on non mandated programs why cant they cover the busing costs of the private school kids whose parents are paying high property taxes.. This is discrimination.

  1. Living in this town is like death by a thousand cuts. Lets all look good by giving some more taxpayer money to the school district, while the taxpayers are getting crushed and have to work so hard to pay their bills that they barely see their family

  2. Where was Michael? Why is he all of a sudden hiding? It was Michael who arranged for the football team to get funding. He told the app that the Million Dollar loan/Grant/Hard earned tax money will sway him to come back.

    1. Watch him come in riding on his white horse at the Tuesday BOE meeting the Igud gave him whatever he wants. They made sure to close the budget gap and almost got the boe president to resign. SCK had his boy AV do the dirty work.

  3. Th ed idea was to have township loan the money to the BOE and the state was to guarantee it.
Instead the generous township spent your hard earned money with no return. No need for caps on budgets because when the district maxes out the rich township takes your money and spends it to make themselves look good. It's a great photo op having all the kids clap for you.
At the same time you have parents crying who barely can make ends meet or put food on the table. They see the tax bill just go up and up while the township spends money like water just to remain in power and keep the wheels of power well greased.
    What a kitrug!!!

  4. This looks like it was theft by deception to set the stage for the Igud so they can control the boe when their man takes over. Shame on the township committee for betraying the public trust and spending other peoples money so they can appese those who got them elected.

  6. So now that Mayor Ray has let it be known that "HE" will not allow the public school students to lose their programs, why does he expect the state to step up and pay their share?

  7. Thanks for spending our hard earned money for us, it's greatly appreciated, how generous!

  8. As a frum taxpayer who owns his house in Lakewood, I fully support the Lakewood Township giving money to the Public Schools to educate the children. I don't feel shortchanged, on the contrary, the way I see it is we are all Hashem's children, and I am happy that my money is going to support a worthy cause - educating today's youth to become tomorrow's leaders.

    1. Admit it you work for the vaad or the Igud. We already pay very high school taxes, don't you get it. This money belongs to the municipal budget. The district has no problem wasting money and now the township gave them more.
If they so worry about the kids that they have sports programs let them cut out the fat in their own budget. Why did they give themselves raises if there is no money. Why did they spend millions on school buses.why did they sign a crazy deal with a custodial service provider that costs the town over 4 million annually.
And finally don't you care about all the frum kids who's parents can't spend time with them because they have to work more just to stay afloat and pay the high taxes.
Where is your compassion for them?
Do you truly believe the public schools are underfunded after receiving 160 million dollars!!!
You obviously don't care or have your head in the sand. Even worse maybe you gain financially on the backs of the poor taxpayers.

    4. What 160 million do the public schools get ? Where did you get that number from ?

    5. the 2016-17 school budget is $135 million still high.

      Delete
    6. A good chunk of that 135 million is title 1 and other federal and state grants for remedial which most goes to our Mosdos, plus a chunk for transportation for mandated for our Mosdos ,plus a large chunk for special needs tuition to a school with mostly members of our kehila. The title 1 and other grant money dies not come from our local taxes as it us federal and state grants.

So of the 135 million probably 40 percent us not local tax dollars and close to 40 per cent of the total budget goes to,put kehila in some form,of fashion.

I am in no way saying that there is no waste in the public school budget as there surely is waste as us typical for all government spending. I am also not saying I agree with the township giving money to the public schools.

All I am saying is that when, people post things that are factually incorrect by a large number ,it means blogs like this have no credibility. You started Off by throwing out that the public schools get 160 million,of out or tax dollars and its really more like 90 million or 100 and of that amount at least a third or more is not really for the public school either. Its always better to be factually correct if you want to have credibility. I may not have all the numbers correct. I think about 2 years ago the local tax amount was about 82 million so I'm assuming its now 90 to 100 of which our kehila mandated busing and special needs tuition takes a large chunk.

    7. Do you think the olam is stupid enough to believe this vaad spin throwing around the word Kehila.
Blogs have no credibility but we should trust the controled news articles and PR that the vaad posts on the Lakewood poop the slopper or the voice. We don't trust a single word written Vin these publications who sold out to the powerful corrupt vaad and to some members on the township. Yes they got land and billboards in return for it. So that's why no one trusts a word out of the vaad PR machine.
We won't forget the pack of lies that were sold to Lakewood residents about the Cedarbridge mall project. Sheker has no feet eventually it will all unravel.

    8. that's 135 million from local money. it's over 180 million in total. over 160 million in total goes to the public students (schi students are public school students)

    9. Outright lies by the vaad trolling. They can't speak the trut if you paid them. This is their modus operandi throw out numbers and stats and hope someone falls for it.

    10. everything anon 10:22 wrote is not true. 135 million of local tax dollars goes directly to the public schools. state and federal programs that go to non-publics is not part of that budget. even out of the total 180 million budget, the amount going to non-public programs is way below 40%.

  9. Next meeting everyone should bring their children and fill up the room.Show the politicians these kids don't see their parents because they Keep spending money and raising taxes.
Have rabbi Avihu Shnall scream that the private school students are not getting their fair share and must pay $150 to the LSTA. Let's make a photo op of Ray Menashe abd Meir Lichtenstein with 100 crying children who's parents have to work longer hours to pay the taxes.

  10. 60% of the property taxes go to the school district but that is not enough so corrupt committee on instructions from the selichos appointed vaad and Igud gave another $1.2 million.
The vaad members who don't pay taxes and those who benefit from the township financially should resign. There must be a public outcry about this.

  11. More than half is going to nonpublic schools! Check your facts. Also librarians are getting funded.

    1. Im not sure its more than half ,but definitely a large portion. But remember most people that have an agenda do not really care about the facts. If the vaad is bad and the committee people are bad and everybody except for them is bad ,then the facts don't really matter so much.

    2. How much tax money goes to who is not the point here. WE pay crazy high property tax to the school district if it's underfunded than go to the state. The township can not give away OUR money just like that. If there is a surplus than lower taxes or give a refund.

The Vaad and committee have only themselves to blame here. It very apparent that they are beholden to certain individuals and not representing the majority of Lakewood tax payers. The blatant corruption and conflicts of interest are public and known and yes its stinks. I spoke to a very well respected rav in town who is very involved with the klal he could not defend the vaad at all to put in nicely.
      ES SHTINKT!

    3. not one penny goes to non-public schools. only about 15 million out of the 180 million budget goes to the lsta. these facts are very easy to look up. why are you posting ignorance?

      Delete
    4. the fact is that the township committee and the VAAD should have been lobbying the state and used all influence to fix the state funding problem for a decade, but they didn't, because they have other priorities.

The fact is that legalizing basements, and dense residential housing causes taxes to skyrocket.(and it doesn't help buyers, because without the rentals, developers would have to sell the homes for less)

The fact is that the tax abatement, PILOT Programs, on projects that would have been built regardless, costs taxpayers money.

The PILOT Program is particularly evil, because the property owner does not pay the school district portion of taxes, while still paying the township, so the Township Committee can boast about their surplus, while strangling the taxpayers and school district.

Excel Park, was given a tax abatement for a expansion THAT WAS ALREADY UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND FULLY RENTED. If that doesn't stink of corruption, then you have no sense of smell.

It is clear that the people who have been running this town could not care less about the people living in it

  12. Everyone is fully entitled to agree or disagree with the giving of money to the public schools. I also don't like it ,although there might be things I don't know and unless I speak to the committee members to ask their reasoning , I won't complain.

Where most of us disagree with you guys ,is the constant nasty name calling ,calls for mesirah on vaad and commitee members and throwing out statements not in line with the facts. All those things just takes away your credibility ,makes you look like rabble rousers and actually very much hurts your cause of trying to convince people of a need for some changes. Unconvinced that the campaign and comments by one or 2 people on this site actually hurt the newcomers st the elections more than they helped. There are a small number of individuals ,one in particular ,whom the majority of regular people don't want to he associated with. His comments here and in public forums, sometimes cross the line of good taste and legitimate disagreement and just hurts the cause of change. Everyone is entitled to do what the want and they can continue whatever they are doing.

    1. Boy do you have your head in the sand, Go around Lakewood speak to informed and educated residents from the seniors to the balei batim to the kolell youngelit. Ask them what they think of the Vaad or the township committee members. The Vaad strength is taking advantage of clueless members of our kehilla by controlling the media they read and using the daas Torah card.
Instead of calling them out for all they have done over the last 15 years abusing the block vote, the conflicts of interests, the blatant corruption giving developers preferential treatment over the will of Lakewood, you point out the few guys who name called someone. Its ok to be corrupt to cheat and to divert public funds but the one who calls them out he is the rasha??
Chazal say "כל המרחם על אכזרים סופו שיתאכזר על רחמנים"
And dont point to the recent elections as any indicator first of all most people did not go out to vote, secondly the vaad intimidated went low and dirty and used the roshei yeshiva just to remain in power. They bought off all the printed media and took advantage of temimesdigah gullible members convincing them they are helping the Kehilla while all they care about is themselves and their fat pockets and ego's.

    2. Who is "we" and "you". The community, the vast majority, is against construction. Ask the many hundreds of people who spend an hour or more today picking up their kids.

I never heard anyone threaten Mesirah, or call for it. Although I do know many people want a stop to the actions of the self serving people destroying this town. They are causing people untold stress and cost them millions of dollars annually.

    3. When most people in town distrust the leadership, yet cannot win an election, there must be an answer.

Personally I never trusted the leadership, but I have yet to see a viable option. We have mosrim and leidigeyers running for office, with no sense of balance or proportion.

      Nothing gets built with hate

    4. The leadership will nake sure there wont be a viable option. Look what they did to HH they didnt take his children into schools they wrote articles calling him misyavnim and printed it in the Yated, Matzav and Shopper. Anyone who stands up to the vaad will be called a moser a rasha a misyaven. The only way to change is if Rabbonim take charge and tell the RY that there is a shtut besides the vaad and they must step away and let a real vaad take over with no self serving or conflicts of interests

The vaad can publicly bashmutz yechidim
They can do whatever they like and no one holds them accountable.
When it's against them they call you moser unqualified divisive and baal machlokes. That's what bullies do they can't take the heat when you give them a taste of their own medicine.
